Prepositions in Punjabi are used to show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence. They indicate direction, location, time, manner, cause, or possession.

İle ਨੂੰ Nu ਮੈਂ ਸਕੂਲ ਨੂੰ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ। (Main school nu ja riha han.) I am going to school.
Of ਦਾ/ਦੀ/ਦੇ Da/Di/De ਇਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਦੋਸਤ ਦੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਹੈ। (Ih mere dost di kitaab hai.) This is my friend's book.
Yakın ਕੋਲ Kol ਪੰਜਾਬ ਕੋਲ ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਹੈ। (Punjab kol Chandigarh hai.) Chandigarh is near Punjab.

Prepositional Phrases

Punjabi often uses prepositional phrases to provide more details about time, place, or direction.

  1. Prepositions of Time
    • ਤੱਕ (Takk) – Until
      • ਉਹ ਸਵੇਰ ਤੱਕ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। (Oh savere takk kam karda hai.) → He works until morning.
    • ਵਿੱਚ (Vich) – In
      • ਮੈਂ ਦੋ ਘੰਟਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਵਾਂਗਾ। (Main do ghantian vich avanga.) → I will come in two hours.
  2. Prepositions of Place
    • ਦੇ ਕੋਲ (De Kol) – Near
      • ਬਸ ਸਟੈਂਡ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਟਲ ਹੈ। (Bus stand de kol ikk hotel hai.) → There is a hotel near the bus stand.
    • ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (De Andar) – Inside
      • ਗਲਾਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਾਣੀ ਹੈ। (Glass de andar paani hai.) → There is water inside the glass.
  3. Prepositions of Direction
    • ਦੇ ਪਾਸੇ (De Pase) – Towards
      • ਉਹ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। (Oh ghar de pase ja riha hai.) → He is going towards the house.
    • ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ (De Bahar) – Outside
      • ਬੱਚੇ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਹਨ। (Bacche ghar de bahar han.) → The children are outside the house.

Word Order with Prepositions

Unlike English, Punjabi prepositions often appear after the noun or pronoun they relate to, functioning like postpositions.
