C'è una parola in italiano che ormai da tempo è un sinonimo perfetto di velocità.

Ok, non è una vera e propria parola, ma un cognome. SI tratta ovviamente di Ferrari.

Un cognome per altro molto diffuso in Italia, da nord a sud.

Ferrari può essere il vostro commercialista, la vostra dermatologa, il vicino di casa che ascolta sempre la musica a volume troppo alto, il collega di lavoro che racconta sempre storie divertenti.

Eppure lo saprete sempre, di Ferrari vero ce n'è stato uno solo.

Uno che è nato in un mondo senza automobili o quasi, che ha superato due guerre mondiali, malattie, disastri, tragedie familiari, accuse infamanti e rifiuti umilianti.

Uno che, nonostante tutto questo, ha stampato il suo cognome e il suo simbolo sulle macchine più veloci del mondo.

Ha costruito un mito, armato della sua ostinazione e della sua grande passione.

È grazie a lui se oggi Ferrari è un simbolo dell'Italia nel mondo. Assieme al suo colore, un rosso acceso, e al suo simbolo, il leggendario cavallino rampante.

Il primo Ferrari famoso d'Italia è un uomo nato nella provincia emiliana, tra botti di aceto e fabbriche rumorose.

Passionale e impulsivo come un personaggio di Fellini, bonario e ridanciano come Peppone e Don Camillo, concentrato sul successo come nessun altro al mondo.

Oggi raccontiamo la storia di Enzo Ferrari, il padre della Rossa.

Abbiamo detto che Enzo Ferrari è nato nella provincia emiliana. In particolare a Modena, città a cui per altro è dedicato l'episodio 40 di Salvatore racconta.

È nato lì nel 1898, due anni prima dell'inizio del ventesimo secolo. Quello che sarebbe stato per sempre il secolo dei motori dopo la fine dei secoli del cavallo e del vapore.

Enzo nasce e cresce e vicino a Modena, dove il padre Alfredo è proprietario di una piccola fabbrica di materiali in acciaio.

Alfredo Ferrari è un uomo buono, ma anche piuttosto autoritario. Per i suoi figli, Dino ed Enzo, ha dei piani molto chiari.

Li fa iscrivere entrambi a una scuola di meccanica, perché imparino le basi del lavoro che un giorno dovranno svolgere. Dino accetta con serenità la scelta del padre. Enzo, molto meno.

È da qualche anno che ha una pulce nell'orecchio che non lo lascia in pace. Da quando è andato a vedere una gara automobilistica, non riesce a smettere di pensare a macchine e piloti.

Ma è costretto presto a concentrarsi su altre cose. Nel 1915, quando ha 17 anni, l'Italia fa il suo ingresso nella prima guerra mondiale.

La serenità che i Ferrari hanno vissuto fino ad allora viene giù come un castello di carte. Dino, il fratello maggiore di Enzo, parte per il fronte. L'anno dopo, il padre Alfredo, muore improvvisamente. Senza la sua presenza, la fabbrica di famiglia appassisce e fallisce nel giro di poco tempo. L'anno successivo, arriva una notizia dal fronte. Dino Ferrari è morto. A causa di una terribile malattia: il tifo.

In un anno, tutto è cambiato.

Enzo Ferrari si trova improvvisamente solo con la madre vedova, e privo della sicurezza economica in cui è cresciuto. È costretto a lavorare dove capita e poi, appena compie 18 anni, parte per il fronte.

La guerra per lui potrebbe finire come è finita per Dino. Enzo si ammala gravemente e passa settimane su un letto di ospedale, attorniato da decine di altri soldati malati, senza speranza di cura, pronti solo a morire. E ne muoiono davvero tanti, ma non lui. Non Enzo Ferrari.

Quando torna la pace, nell'Italia impoverita, Enzo decide di andare a Torino, la capitale industriale d'Italia. Lì c'è la Fiat, la grande azienda delle automobili, il suo primo grande amore. Così ci prova. Compra una cravatta e va nell'ufficio di un dirigente a chiedere un lavoro. Ma Torino è piena di giovani disoccupati, alla Fiat non sono interessati. Non c'è posto lì per Enzo Ferrari.

Lui è frustrato, ma non può fare altro che ingoiare il rospo e andare avanti.

Vede attorno a lui che il momento dei motori rombanti sta per tornare. Più forte di prima. Con macchine più potenti, grazie alle tecnologie belliche ora prestate all'industria civile.

Insomma, è in corso un rinascimento dell'automobilismo ed Enzo non vede l'ora di farne parte.

Prima però c'è da fare la gavetta. Enzo passa da un lavoro all'altro, non importa tanto quale. Ovunque ci sia una macchina da guidare, per lui va bene. Le cose a Torino cominciano ad andargli bene. Ha qualche soldo da parte, degli amici, e poi conosce una donna che frequenta i suoi stessi bar dove si parla sempre di macchine e di motori. Quella donna si chiama Laura Garello e diventerà sua moglie.

Negli stessi anni, Enzo corona finalmente il suo sogno da adolescente. Trova una macchina per partecipare alle gare. È una vecchia Alfa Romeo, buona forse per partecipare a qualche gran premio locale. Ma a lui va bene. Inizia la sua carriera da pilota.

Quelle piccole gare locali gli danno una grande occasione. I dirigenti dell'Alfa Romeo lo vedono guidare una loro macchina, lo notano e si incuriosiscono a lui. Enzo capisce che quella è la sua occasione. Si mette in mostra, ci va a parlare e quelli gli offrono un lavoro. All'inizio come agente commerciale per le auto da strada. Ma lui riesce a infilarsi anche nelle questioni che riguardano le corse.

Il lavoro alla Alfa Romeo è un sogno. La prima vera rivalsa dopo il grande rifiuto dalla Fiat.

Enzo continua la sua vendetta grazie al suo grande carisma. Conosce tutti, parla con tutti. Con i suoi contatti e la sua parlantina da emiliano, fa i miracoli. Riesce a portare alla Alfa Romeo ingegneri e collaudatori rubati alle altre aziende. Come Ugo Sivocci, che diventa presto un suo grande amico.

Assieme a lui e alla squadra di Alfa Romeo, progetta un prototipo rivoluzionario di macchina da corsa, l'Alfa Romeo P1.

Una macchina potente. Più veloce delle altre. Troppo veloce. L'8 settembre del 1923 vanno a Monza all'autodromo per una prova su pista. Alla guida c'è Sivocci. La macchina va bene, ma basta un solo errore. Una curva un po' più difficile che Sivocci non vede in tempo. Finisce contro un muro. La P1 finisce in mille pezzi. Sivocci perde la vita.

Per Enzo Ferrari è un colpo terribile. Umano e professionale. Ma allora forse hanno ragione quelli che dicono che non è un vero meccanico e che esagera con la velocità fino a non capirci niente?

Lui decide di non perdersi d'animo e di tuffarsi a capofitto nel lavoro. Continua a fare le cose a modo suo. Convince un altro progettista della concorrenza a venire all'Alfa Romeo. Questa volta si tratta di Vittorio Jano, rubato addirittura alla Fiat. Con lui, Enzo ha un obiettivo preciso. Perfezionare la P1 che ha ucciso Sivocci, farne un modello più potente, ma anche più sicuro. Da quella collaborazione, nasce l'Alfa P2.

Una macchina strepitosa. Che Enzo Ferrari mette in mano a piloti strepitosi. Tra loro, anche Tazio Nuvolari. Ve lo ricordate? Alla guida dell'Alfa, Nuvolari vince gare a bizzeffe e gli altri restano con un pugno di mosche in mano. Alla Fiat, dopo quell'anno, rinunciano definitivamente alla linea sportiva. La vendetta di Enzo Ferrari è compiuta.

Ma a lui non basta. Decide che è il momento di cambiare musica. Quel successo sportivo è dell'Alfa, certo. Ma è soprattutto suo.

Decide che non vuole più lavorare per la Alfa Romeo, ma con la Alfa Romeo. Non più da dipendente, ma da socio.

Dice ai suoi capi: voi procuratemi le macchine, fornitemi l'assistenza e modificate i motori secondo le mie indicazioni. Io penserò alle corse. Organizzerò una squadra di piloti.

Con un termine mutuato dal mondo dei cavalli, nell'automobilismo una squadra di piloti si chiama scuderia. E anche la sua si chiamerà scuderia.

Il primo dicembre 1929 apre ufficialmente i battenti la scuderia Ferrari.

La carriera di Enzo sembra lanciata verso un successo senza precedenti, ma gli ostacoli non mancano.

Nel 1932 nasce il suo primogenito, che si chiama Dino, come il suo povero fratello morto in guerra. All'inizio Enzo è felicissimo, ma la gioia si trasforma presto in angoscia quando scoprono che il piccolo Dino soffre di una grave malattia genetica. Per la quale morirà a soli 24 anni.

E poi c'è il fascismo, che sta cambiando l'Italia. A Enzo la politica non importa, ma l'arrivo di Mussolini cambia i suoi piani. L'Alfa Romeo si ritira dalle corse e lui rimane con il cerino in mano. Ma non si perde d'animo. Investe un po' di soldi per costruire a Modena la sua personale fabbrica di automobili.

Sembra una soluzione perfetta, ma in realtà dura poco. La conseguenza diretta del fascismo è la partecipazione dell'Italia alla seconda guerra mondiale.

Più per rassegnazione che per convinzione, Enzo Ferrari si adegua al potere fascista. Quando gli ordinano di convertire la sua fabbrica per usi bellici, lui non batte ciglio.

E quando i bombardamenti angloamericani rischiano di colpire Modena, prende la decisione di trasferire tutto lontano dal centro e verso la campagna. Precisamente, a Maranello, dove si trova ancora oggi la sede della Ferrari.

In quegli stessi complicatissimi anni, Enzo non smette di essere sé stesso, e apre un altro capitolo della sua travagliata vita privata. Mentre vive a Maranello con la moglie Laura e il figlio Dino, ha una relazione a Modena con un'altra donna, Lina Lardi, da cui avrà un altro figlio, Piero. Una doppia vita che terrà segreta a lungo, con scandali e traumi familiari che porterà con sé a lungo.

Intanto però la guerra è finita. L'Italia ne è uscita a pezzi, ma anche carica di una nuova energia per ripartire. E quando c'è da partire veloci, Enzo Ferrari è in prima linea.

Quando riprendono le corse, deve prendere una decisione. Con un nodo alla gola, dice addio alla Alfa Romeo, la sua casa per tanti anni.

Del resto ormai è chiaro che, con la sua fabbrica e i suoi piloti, non ha bisogno della Alfa. Può lasciare il nido e spiccare il volo.

In quegli anni, nasce il campionato mondiale di Formula 1. Figuriamoci se, in quel contesto, uno come Enzo Ferrari non è da subito protagonista. Nel 1952, alla terza edizione del mondiale, il pilota campione del mondo guida una Ferrari. È Alberto Ascari, che arriva davanti ai piloti Alfa Romeo che avevano dominato le prime due edizioni. Per l'Alfa Romeo quell'anno è l'ultima pagina nel mondo delle gare. Per la Ferrari, è la prima. Di una storia che ancora oggi.

Dopo la vittoria del primo mondiale, Enzo non si monta la testa, anzi continua a lavorare duro ed è capace di leggere bene le situazioni. Con il fiuto del grande imprenditore.

All'inizio, se dipendesse solo da lui, Enzo nella sua fabbrica produrrebbe solo monoposto da corsa. Ma non è conveniente da nessun punto di vista. Alla fine accetta i consigli che riceve, come quello di vendere il sogno della Ferrari anche ai non-piloti. In America, soprattutto, i ricchi vanno pazzi per la Ferrari e sarebbero disposti a pagare un sacco di soldi per guidarne una. Detto fatto. In poco tempo, Enzo apre una linea di produzione di Ferrari da strada da vendere ai ricconi americani. Tutti soldi che potrà investire nelle gare automobilistiche.

Investiti bene, oggi lo possiamo dire.

Dalla nascita della scuderia Ferrari, il cavallino rampante ha vinto ben 16 volte il mondiale di Formula 1.

La storia della Rossa continua ancora oggi, tra alti e bassi. Quella di Enzo è finita nel 1988. A novant'anni esatti dalla sua nascita.

Un mese dopo, al Gran Premio di Formula 1 di Monza, due Ferrari si sono classificate prima e seconda. Un omaggio postumo all'uomo senza cui tutto quello non sarebbe mai esistito.

Qualcuno dice che Enzo Ferrari si è perso gli anni migliori della sua creatura. Gli anni di Michael Schumacher alla guida, per esempio, con i cinque titoli consecutivi vinti.

È vero, Enzo tutto questo non l'ha vissuto. Ha avuto una vita dura, ha visto morire suo padre, suo fratello, suo figlio. Ha visto fallire il suo primo matrimonio.

L'impressione, però, è che sia stato felice. Per avere esaudito il suo grande sogno.

È stato un padre. Patriarcale e impulsivo, come gli è stato insegnato dalla vita a essere. A volte collerico, esagerato, ma anche presente e appassionato.

Enzo Ferrari è stato il padre della Rossa e il suo nome è scolpito a grandi lettere nell'eternità.
