Un poema in prosa?

E perchè no? Forse il popolo non ha i suoi poemi, che si tramandano di padre in figlio e vivono ignorati nella mente e nel cuore del povero boscaiuolo e dell'alpigiano? Tutto che è forte e gentile, mesto e meraviglioso trova un'eco fedele tra la queta pace dei boschi, tra le rupi ove dominano il montanaro e l'aquila, dove al soffio della tramontana fischiano ancora i merli del bieco castello feudale, e paiono raccontare storie di terrore. E questo poema che nacque fra i gioghi della Svevia, si svolse negli Abruzzi e si chiuse sulla piazza del mercato a Napoli; è il poema più caro dè nostri mandriani e delle nostre nonne. Essi, ogni giorno, quando il sole indora le cime del Velino, scendono a' campi, salgono sui greppi, popolano le valli; e là tra què campi, l'aratro scopre l'elmo, la picca o lo stinco d'un guerriero svevo o angioino; su què greppi il pastore addita l'ala del monticello che nascose la sventura del re giovinetto; e nelle valli la bruna contadina canta a distesa la storia del tradito di Astura. Se siete un viaggiatore curioso, chiedete a quella brava gente il suo poema e ve lo diranno, mostrandovi i campi Palentini, la Scùrcola, Tagliacozzo, il Salto e il tempio della Vittoria. Forse nessuno storico al mondo ha saputo mai tanto di quel fatto quanto què rozzi montanari. Ed io gli ho veduti què luoghi benedetti; e mentre il fulvo Mommsen andava scoprendo avanzi del mondo antico scritto su millenari sepolcri e su lapidi frante; io interrogavo i vecchierelli e le donnicciuole per iscoprire qual canto del poema di Corradino sia rimasto vivo nella perpetua tradizione.

E vidi che la tradizione scritta su' sassi e nelle menti, s'era serbata fedele: e vestendo di meraviglioso la verità, poteva mostrarmi cose che si cercano inutilmente a' libri. Allora tutto quello stupendo aggruppamento dell'Appennino centrale che cinge la regione marsicana, dandole forma d'un bacino, parve animarsi e tornare come a' tempi degli Svevi. E rividi Tagliacozzo, posta un po' in alto, coi suoi monti ispidi e selvaggi, colle sue praterie, co' suoi bellicosi signori e innumerevoli frati. Rividi i Campi Palentini, ampie vallonate verdeggianti, dove corse la furia dè cavalli da guerra e dove adesso pascolano le greggi e cantano i villani. Rividi il Salto, fiumicello che divise gli Svevi e gli Angioini, prima della battaglia, che ne inghiotti molti durante la pugna, e che valse poi a rendere meno ingombri di cadaveri i campi, finita la strage. E rividi infine la Scùrcola, bel paesello, sotto le cui mura si decise la sventura di Corradino, e sopra al quale sorgeva il tempio della Vittoria.

Tutti lo sapete: Carlo d'Angiò fece erigere la Badia e la chiesa, come a ricordo della sua fortuna; ma quello che forse pochi sanno si è che lo straniero nel compiere il suo santo voto fece anche opera di barbaro. V'è in què luoghi un misero villaggio: poche capanne, una chiesa, terre desolate, brulle. Quel villaggio fu una volta Alba fucente , prigione di quattro re, città di quarantamila persone, recinta di quattro ordini di mura, traversata dalle maggiori strade consolari, onorata di un senato...

Ai tempi di Carlo era ancora ricca, ma di triste ricchezza — di rovine. E re Carlo la spogliò di marmi e colonne d'archi e di statue. I sepolcri degli antichi romani servirono di fondamento alla badia; i torsi di consoli e tribuni, le membra di effigie equestri ne eressero le mura; i colonnati di travertino o di marmo pario valsero a reggerne le volte; le lapidi, le iscrizioni a rovescio ne formarono il pavimento; e quando gli innumerevoli ruderi sovranzarono il bisogno, furono dispersi per le campagne, dove le cerca paziente chi vuol ricostrurre con le rovine la storia del passato.

II.

E narra la voce del popolo fra le montagne...

I campi erano pieni di morti e si combatteva ancora. Corradino era sulle prime file: pareva un arcangelo che fulminasse i nemici. Ma non scorgeva speranza di vittoria, tranne che morendo; e il re giovinetto voleva morire. Eppure forse gli sorse in cuore l'idea della madre lontana che pregava e che piangeva per lui; e quando i suoi fedeli, con dolce violenza, afferrarono le redini del suo cavallo e lo vollero salvo, egli chinò il capo sul petto, rassegnato alla sventura. E vanno e vanno tra le valli e i dirupi in cerca di rifugio.

E la fanciulla seguita a montar l'erta; e i guerrieri la seguono fino alla capanna. Ma la capanna è una grotta scavata nel masso, e quel masso è in alto, in alto che tocca il cielo.

E pregava, pregava ancora quando vide un bel paggio tornare alla capanna.

— Buona fanciulla che preghi la Madonna, vuoi tu serbare i tesori del re Corradino, ch'è inseguito dai nemici? — I suoi tesori mi saranno cari, e nessuno li vedrà mai.

Allora il paggio aperse sette scrigni, e comparvero la corona, lo scettro e anelli e tante monete d'oro. — In un cantuccio, là, al buio, scaviamo la terra e nascondiamo tutto.

— Scaviamo la terra e nascondiamo tutto.

E si misero a scavare. Ma d'un tratto comparve un uomo sulla grotta che disse: — In nome del re Corradino, io debbo vedere dove si nasconde il tesoro.

E vide, perchè egli era un suo fedele scudiere.

— Paggio gentile, pianta la tua spada su quel cantuccio, perchè sia segno del tesoro.

E il paggio piantò la spada.

Ma il fedele scudiero trasse allora la sua e la immerse nel cuore al giovinetto.

La fanciulla tremava e piangeva su quel corpo; ma non potè più levarsi, perchè la punta del pugnale dello scudiero la confisse al cadavere del paggio.

Po', quell'uomo scavò una fossa, vi buttò il tesoro, e sul tesoro i due morti; li coperse di terra e disse: — Custodite quest'oro, o anime innocenti, sino al mio ritorno. E sparve.

Forse non tornò più, perchè sulla mezzanotte furono viste vagare su què greppi due spettri bianchi, che sparivano al cantare del gallo.

E narra ancora la voce del popolo fra le montagne...

Ma nel colmo della notte s'udirono per le valli e su le rupi lo squillare dei corni, lo stridere dè ponti levatoi e il cupo grido dè messi che diceva: — Corradino è morto!

E a questo succedeva il silenzio, rotto dai singhiozzi delle castellane o dal ringhio dei mastini, che forse rodevano a quell'ora il cranio d'un caduto nè campi marsicani. — Corradino è morto!

Ripeteva l'eco nelle forre, nei cuori, nè tempi. E nel tempio della Vittoria l'urlo parve un anatema di Dio, e scosse le pareti. Le campane suonavano a cordoglio; i frati caddero nella polvere pregando, e la notte parve più nera.

Allora i mandriani e i boscaiuoli, usciti all'aperto videro sul tempio come una nuvola rossa rossa che grondava sangue e su quella nuvola era scritto: — Vendetta di Dio sull'omicida! E tutti furono presi da terrore, mentre lo squillo delle campane, l'ululare delle gole dè monti e il pianto delle fanciulle ripeteva: — Corradino è morto!

Ed ogni secolo, ricorrendo quella notte, la nuvola ricomparve; e d'ogni parte risuonò la voce: — È morto Corradino!

Ed erano passati così tre secoli, meno un giorno e quel giorno ricordava la battaglia di Tagliacozzo. Dall'alba a mezzanotte, i frati della Vittoria avevano pregato Dio perché non si rinnovasse quell'anno la visione spaventosa; i vecchierelli con le nuore e i figli erano inginocchiati inanzi alle capanne aspettando; fremeva il lago di lontano; ma riposava il vento e in cielo non si vedeva alcuna stella... quando da' campi Palentini e presso la Scùrcola fu vista diffondersi una lieve luce che illuminava un esercito di scheletri, ed ogni scheletro aveva una spada risplendente, e innanzi a tutti era un giovinetto dalle chiome bionde. E quell'esercito avanzava con la bandiera spiegata, e su quella bandiera era l'aquila ghibellina. E avanza, e avanza, finchè sale il colle della Scùrcola e circonda il tempio...

Allora la nuvola ricompare anch'essa, si dilata e avvolge l'esercito dè morti, e lo trascina sul culmine del tempio, dove ogni spada distrugge, e in un baleno il tempio della Vittoria non si vede più... E con esso scompare l'esercito, la nuvola e il giovinetto dalle bionde chiome... Alla mattina, i contadini e i mandriani accorsero sul luogo... Il tempio era scomparso davvero, e non restava che un mucchio di rovine. Col tempo, anche le rovine sono scomparse, e adesso il viaggiatore da quella gente soltanto può sapere dove sorgevano una volta.
