私 が 上野 の 音楽 学校 に 奉職 する こと に なった 時 、色々 話 が ある から というので 、或る 日 学校 に 呼ばれて 行った こと が ある 。 いよいよ 講師 として の 辞令 を 渡さ れた 時 、乗杉 校長 が 、この 学校 は 官立 である から 、官吏 という 立場 において 体面 を 汚さぬ ような こと は 、どんな こと を しても よい が 商事 会社 の 重役 に なって はいけぬ と 言った 。 ・・

私 も 長年 弟子 を 教えて は いた が 、 学校 の 先生 に なった の は 初めて な ので 、 非常に 珍しく また 嬉しい 気持 が した 。 第 二 に 嬉しかった の は 、 鉄道 の 割引 が ある ので 、 何だか むやみに 嬉しくて 、 その 当時 は 何 処 か 旅行 が して み たくて たまらなかった 。 その お蔭 で それ 程 用事 も なかった 所 に も 行ったり した 。 しかし 最近 は 割引 を して 貰う のに 、時間 が とれて 面倒 に 思う ように なった 。 ・・

或る 日 音楽 学校 で 、私 の 作曲 した もの を 箏曲 科 の 学生 に 歌わ せた こと が あった 。 何 れ も 女学校 を 卒業 した 者 か 、または それ 位 の 年頃 の 者 であった が 、その 声 の 良し 悪し は 別 として 、それ が 非常に 純粋な 響き で 私 の 胸 を 打つ もの が あった 。 唄 が 朗詠風 の もの であった ので 、私 は 歌わ せて い ながら 、何だか 自分 が 天国 に 行って 、天女 の コーラス を 聴いて いる ような 、何とも いいがたい 感じ が した 。 私 は 或る レコード で 、バッハ の カンタータ を 聴いた こと が ある が 、その カンタータ の コーラス が 、わざわざ 少女 を 集めて コーリング した ので 、曲 も そう である が 、普通の コーラス と は 別の 感じ が して 、私 は その 演奏 に 打たれた こと が あった 。 私 は その 時 、これ から 少女たち の 声 を 入れた もの を 作曲して みたい と 思った 。 ・・

それ で 生徒 の 方 でも 、いつの間にか その 歩く 足音 で 、あれ は 何 先生 だ と いう こと を 感別 していた のだ そうである 。 私 は 如何にも 音 の こと に 就いて 教育 されている 学校 だ と 思って 、感心 した こと が ある 。 ・・

盲学校 の 事 に ついて 、思い出す の は 、或る 日 、盲学校 で 演奏会 が あった 。 その 時 、片山 校長 が 、「盲人 と 音楽 」という こと に 就いて 話さ れた 。 校長 の 話 が 終る と 聞いて いた 職員 や 、盲人 の 生徒たち が 、感激 の あまり 、先生 先生 と いって 校長 の 傍 に 近よって 行った 。 私 の 察する ところ で は 、校長 が 盲人 たち に 突き当たられる 不安 が あった らしく 、それ に 元来 盲人 は 感覚 の 強い もの である と いう 点 を 思われて か 、一々 近よって 来た 盲人たち を 、自分 の 手 で 触れて 行かれた 。 実は そういう 私 も 手 で 触れられた 一 人 であった 。 ・・

この 場 の 光景 は 私 に は 見え なかった が 、私 の 想像 で は 、校長 が 職員 や 盲人 の 生徒 の 群がる 中 を 泳ぐ ように して 、進んで 行かれた ので は ない か と 思った 。 そして 、手 を 触れて 貰った 職員 や 生徒 たち は 、さぞ 校長 を 懐しく 思った こと であろう と 思った 。
