1970 年 ， 由於 我 學 過 中文 ， 因此 被 認為 是 派 往 北京 擔任 商務 專員 的 人選 。

Tokyo is a collection of several villages, each distinct yet uniquely characterized.
大體 說來 （ 大體 ） ， 東京 並 不 是 個 美麗 的 城市 。
Generally speaking, Tokyo is not a beautiful city.
但 對 居住 其中 的 人 ， 尤其 是 絕大多數 的 外國人 來說 ， 卻 極 富 吸引力 。
But for the people living in it, especially the vast majority of foreigners, it is extremely attractive.
這是 一個 完全 的 城市 ， 具有 大 都會 應有盡有 的 方便 ，
It is a complete city, with all the conveniences that a metropolis should have,
又 有 小 村莊 才 具有 的 友善 、 禮貌 、 和 正直 。

她 堅持 我 把 行李 留 在 店 裡 ， 好 讓 我 到 她 競爭 對手 那裡 買 我 需要 的 花 。
She insisted that I leave my luggage in the shop so that I could go to her competitor to buy the flowers I needed.
除了 東京 ， 還有 什麼 地方 會 有 這樣 的 事 呢 ?
Besides Tokyo, where else would there be such a thing?

但 我 已 決心 要 學 日文 ， 而且 要 學 得 通順 ， 正如 我 向 上司 許 過 的 諾言 一樣 。
But I was determined to learn Japanese, and to learn it fluently, just as I had promised my superior.
我 學習 中文 的 經驗 ， 對 我 日後 的 學習 方法 和 信念 ， 都 大有 幫助 。
My experience learning Chinese greatly helped my future learning methods and beliefs.
我 帶 著 這些 方法 來到 日本 ， 決心 要 在 六個月 之內 ， 用 我 自己 的 方法 來 自學 日文 。
I brought these methods to Japan, determined to self-study Japanese using my own approach within six months.
為了 要 在 這個 期間 之內 能 有 突破性 的 進展 ， 我 決意 不計 一切 犧牲 來 達到 這個 目的 。
In order to make breakthrough progress during this period, I am determined to make any sacrifice to achieve this goal.
假如 我 成功 了 ， 我 就 能 以 日語 維生 ，
If I succeed, I will be able to make a living in Japanese,
而 不 像 大多數 的 西方人 那樣 ， 只 生活 在 英語 的 世界 裡 。
instead of living in an English-speaking world like most Westerners.
當 我 和 妻子 移居 到 日本 的 時候 ， 我們 已 有 了 一個 小孩 ， 另 一個 也 即將 來臨 。
When my wife and I moved to Japan, we already had one child, and another was on the way.
我 在 大使館 的 工 作 多半 使用 英語 ，

Back when I was in Hong Kong, I was already exposed to some Japanese.
當時 的 日本 領事館 也 有 一些 人 在 那裡 學 中文 ， 部分 還是 我 的 好 朋友 。
At that time, there were also some people from the Japanese consulate learning Chinese there, some of whom were my good friends.
有 一 位 名叫 加藤 弘一 的 外務省 官員 ， 後來 還 成 了 領導 自民黨 的 政治 人物 。
There was an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs named Hirokazu Kato, who later became a political figure leading the Liberal Democratic Party.

The first six months living in Japan were the period when I focused my energy on learning the most, and it was also a crucial moment that determined my success or failure.
我 必須 找出 自己 的 學習 材料 ， 而且 發展 出 一套 自己 的 學習 方法 。
I had to find my own learning materials and develop my own learning methods.
我 到 書店 去 尋找 需要 的 材料 ，

我 原 以為 是 吟誦 佛教 經文 的 聲音 ，

I avoid speaking too quickly, so that I have enough time to think.
這 說來 容易 ， 實際上 卻 總是 表達 得 十分 吃力 。
This is easy to say, but in reality, it is always very difficult to express.
這 大概 是 學習 過程 中 不可 避免 的 吧 !

其實 ， 每 種 語言 都 有 它 獨特 的 困難 之 處 ，
In fact, every language has its unique difficulties,

學習 日語 的 主要 困難 是 中國 字 ， 也 就是 所謂 的 「 漢字 」 。
The main difficulty in learning Japanese is the Chinese characters, also known as 'kanji.'
許多 人 在 學習 語言 時 ， 雖然 不能 閱 讀 ， 卻 也 一樣 能夠 講 得 很 好 。
Many people, when learning a language, can speak very well even if they cannot read.
但 假如 你 能夠 聽 ， 也 能夠 讀 ， 就 會 對 那個 語言 更 有 感受 。
However, if you can listen and also read, you will have a deeper appreciation for that language.
閱讀 是 鑑賞 語言 的 一種 方式 ， 與 聆聽 不盡 相同 ，
Reading is a way to appreciate a language, which is different from listening,
它 可以 加強 你 對 該 語言 的 理解力 。
