26 1 Agrippa vero ad Paulum ait : Permittitur tibi loqui pro temetipso. 26 1 But Agrippa said to Paul: You are permitted to speak for yourself. Tunc Paulus extenta manu cœpit rationem reddere : 2 De omnibus quibus accusor a Judæis, rex Agrippa, æstimo me beatum apud te cum sim defensurus me hodie, 3 maxime te sciente omnia, et quæ apud Judæos sunt consuetudines et quæstiones : propter quod obsecro patienter me audias. Then Paulus, with outstretched hand, began to give an account: 2 Concerning all things against which I am accused by the Jews, King Agrippa, I consider myself happy with you, since I am about to defend myself today, 3 especially because you know all things, and what are the customs and questions among the Jews: for which reason I beg you to be patient listen 4 Et quidem vitam meam a juventute, quæ ab initio fuit in gente mea in Jerosolymis, noverunt omnes Judæi : 5 præscientes me ab initio (si velint testimonium perhibere) quoniam secundum certissimam sectam nostræ religionis vixi pharisæus. 4 And indeed, my life from my youth, which was from the beginning in my nation in Jerusalem, all the Jews know: 5 forewarning me from the beginning (if they wish to bear witness) that I lived according to the most certain sect of our religion, a Pharisee. 6 Et nunc, in spe quæ ad patres nostros repromissionis facta est a Deo, sto judicio subjectus : 7 in quam duodecim tribus nostræ nocte ac die deservientes, sperant devenire. 6 And now, in the hope of the promise made to our fathers by God, I stand subject to judgment: 7 in which twelve of our tribes, serving night and day, hope to become. Dominus autem dixit : Ego sum Jesus, quem tu persequeris. 16 Sed exsurge, et sta super pedes tuos : ad hoc enim apparui tibi, ut constituam te ministrum, et testem eorum quæ vidisti, et eorum quibus apparebo tibi, 17 eripiens te de populo et gentibus, in quas nunc ego mitto te, 18 aperire oculos eorum, ut convertantur a tenebris ad lucem, et de potestate Satanæ ad Deum, ut accipiant remissionem peccatorum, et sortem inter sanctos, per fidem quæ est in me. 16 But rise up and stand on your feet: for this I appeared to you, to make you a minister, and a witness of those things which you have seen, and of those things to which I will appear to you, 17 rescuing you from the people and nations into which I am now sending you, 18 to open their eyes, that they may be turned from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive the remission of sins, and a lot among the saints, through the faith that is in me. 19 Unde, rex Agrippa, non fui incredulus cælesti visioni : 20 sed his qui sunt Damasci primum, et Jerosolymis, et in omnem regionem Judææ, et gentibus, annuntiabam, ut pœnitentiam agerent, et converterentur ad Deum, digna pœnitentiæ opera facientes. 19 Wherefore, king Agrippa, I was not unbelieving of the heavenly vision: 20 but I preached to those who are in Damascus first, and in Jerusalem, and in all the region of Judea, and to the Gentiles, that they should do penance and turn to God, doing works worthy of penance. 21 Hac ex causa me Judæi, cum essem in templo, comprehensum tentabant interficere. 21 For this reason the Jews, when I was in the temple, arrested me and tried to kill me. 22 Auxilio autem adjutus Dei usque in hodiernum diem, sto, testificans minori atque majori, nihil extra dicens quam ea quæ prophetæ locuti sunt futura esse, et Moyses, 23 si passibilis Christus, si primus ex resurrectione mortuorum, lumen annuntiaturus est populo et gentibus. 22 But with the help of God, I stand to this day, testifying to the minor and the major, saying nothing more than what the prophets had spoken would happen, and Moses, 23 if the suffering Christ, if the first from the resurrection of the dead, is about to announce the light to the people and the nations. 24 Hæc loquente eo, et rationem reddente, Festus magna voce dixit : Insanis, Paule : multæ te litteræ ad insaniam convertunt. 24 When he had spoken these things, and given the account, Festus said in a loud voice: You are mad, Paul: many letters turn you to madness. 25 Et Paulus : Non insanio, inquit, optime Feste, sed veritatis et sobrietatis verba loquor. 25 And Paulus: I am not mad, says he, on a very good day, but I speak words of truth and sobriety. 26 Scit enim de his rex, ad quem et constanter loquor : latere enim eum nihil horum arbitror. 26 For the king, to whom I speak constantly, knows about these things: for I do not think that any of these things can be hidden from him. Neque enim in angulo quidquam horum gestum est. For none of these was done in the corner. 27 Credis, rex Agrippa, prophetis ? 27 Do you believe, King Agrippa, the prophets? Scio quia credis. I know that you believe. 28 Agrippa autem ad Paulum : In modico suades me christianum fieri. 28 And Agrippa to Paul: In a little way you advise me to become a Christian. 29 Et Paulus : Opto apud Deum, et in modico et in magno, non tantum te, sed etiam omnes qui audiunt hodie fieri tales, qualis et ego sum, exceptis vinculis his. 29 And Paul: I pray to God, both in small and in great, not only you, but also all who hear today become such as I am, except for these bonds. 30 Et exsurrexit rex, et præses, et Bernice, et qui assidebant eis. 30 And the king arose, and the governor, and Bernice, and those who sat with them. 31 Et cum secessissent, loquebantur ad invicem, dicentes : Quia nihil morte aut vinculis dignum quid fecit homo iste. 31 And when they had retired, they spoke to one another, saying: Because this man has done nothing worthy of death or bonds. 32 Agrippa autem Festo dixit : Dimitti poterat homo hic, si non appellasset Cæsarem. 32 And Agrippa said to Festus: This man might have been released if he had not appealed to Caesar.
