In the crowded city of Nairobi, far away from the warmth of the family, there lived a group of homeless boys.
They spent their days aimlessly.
Ils passaient leurs journées sans but.
In the mornings, while the boys had slept on the cold pavement the night before, they would collect their mats.
To deal with the cold of the day, they burned garbage to warm themselves.
Magzwe was among that group of boys.
He was the youngest member of the group.
When Magzweh's parents died, he was only five years old.
He went to live with his uncle.
This man did not take care of that child.
He did not give Magzwe enough food.
He forced Magzwe to do a lot of hard work.
If Magzwe complained or asked a question, his uncle would beat him.
When Magzwe asked if he could go to school, his uncle hit him and said, "You are too stupid to learn anything." Three years after this behavior, Magzwe ran away from his uncle's house.
He started living on the street.
Life on the street was hard and most of the boys struggled daily to get food.
Sometimes they were arrested, sometimes they were beaten.
When they were sick, there was no one to help them.
The group depended on the small amount of money they made by sorting and selling plastics and other recycled materials.
Life was made even more difficult as rival factions fought to gain control of the city.
One day, while Magzwe was looking in the trash, he found a tattered and old story book.
He wiped the dirt from it and put it in his bag.
Every day after that he took out the book and looked at the pictures.
He didn't know how to read the words.
The pictures told the story of a boy who wanted to grow up to be a pilot.
Magzoh dreamed of becoming a pilot every day.
Sometimes, he imagined that he was the boy in the story.
The weather was cold and Magzoh was standing at the beginning of the road.
A man went to him.
I work near here, where you can find something to eat.” He pointed to a yellow house with a blue roof.
“I hope you'll go over there and get some food?” he asked. Magzwe looked at the man and then at the house.
He said, "Maybe" and continued on his way.
Over the past month, the homeless boys used to see Thomas around.
He liked to talk to people, especially people living on the streets.
Thomas listened to people's life stories.
He was serious and patient, never rude or rude.
Some boys started going to that yellow and blue house to get food at noon.
Magzoh was sitting on the sidewalk and looking at his photo book.
"What's the story about?" Thomas asked as he sat down next to her. "The story is about a boy who became a pilot," answered Magzwe. "What was that boy's name?" asked Thomas. "I don't know, I can't read," Magzwe said softly.
When they met, Magzwe began to tell Thomas his life story.
That story was about his uncle and why he ran away from him.
Thomas didn't talk much and didn't tell Magzwe what to do, but he always listened carefully.
Sometimes they talked to each other while eating in that house with the blue roof.
Near Magzoh's tenth birthday, Thomas gave him a new storybook.
It was a story about a village boy who grew up to become a famous footballer.
Thomas read that story to Magzwe several times, until one day he said, “I think it's time you went to school and learned to read.
What do you think?" Thomas explained that I know of a place where the children can stay and go to school.
Magzwe thought about this new place and going to school.
But what if his uncle was right and he was too young to learn anything? But what if they beat him in this new place? He was scared.
He thought to himself, "Perhaps it would be better to continue living on the streets."
He shared his fears with Thomas.
Over time, Thomas assured Magzwe that life in the new environment could be better.
And so Magzwe went to a room in a house with a green roof.
He shared that room with two other boys.
Altogether ten children lived in that house.
Along with Antisissy, three dogs, a cat and an old goat.
Magzwe started school, school was hard.
Sometimes he wanted to give up.
But he was thinking about that pilot and that football player in the story book.
He loved them, he wouldn't give up.
Il les aimait, il n'abandonnerait pas.
Magzwe was sitting in the courtyard of the house with a blue roof and was reading a story book from school.
Thomas came and sat next to him.
Thomas asked, "What is the subject of the story?" Magzwe replied, "The story is about a boy who became a teacher." "What's that boy's name?" asked Thomas. Magzwe said with a smile, "That boy's name is Magzwe."
