我 的 記憶 是 從 加拿大 開始 。

我 並不 記得 在 小 的 時候 ，除了 英語 之外 還 講 過 其它 的 語言 ，雖然 我 知道 我 最先 講 的 是 瑞典 話 。

很 可能 這 小時候 學習 第二 語言 的 經驗 ，對 我 成長 之後 的 語言 學習 幫助 極大 。

但是 ，我 認識 的 其它 一些 移居 到 加拿大 的 小孩 以後 並 沒有 成為 語言 家 。

我 也 認識 一些 出生 於 加拿大 ，並且 一直 在 英語 環境 中 長大 的 小孩 ，後來 卻 成 了 極 優秀 的 語言家 。

我 把 自己 學習 語言 成功 的 原因 歸 諸 於 探險 精神 和 密集 學習 的 強烈 意願 。

我 相信 其它 人 也 一樣 能夠 做到 ，只要 他們 預備 好 開始 步 上 這個 令人 興奮 的 語言 探索 之 旅 。

我 對 蒙特利爾 最早 的 記憶 之一 ，是 發生 在 一九五二 年 的 一個 偶發 事件 （偶發 ）。

我們 一群 六歲 多 的 小孩 ，喜歡 把 我們 的 壘球 棒 收藏 在 一個 特定 的 地方 。

每天 放學 後 ，我們 便 把 球棒 拿 出來 開始 玩 球 。

有 一天 ，球棒 不見了 ，我們 立刻 認為 是 那個 剛 從 愛沙尼亞 來 的 男孩 偷 了 那個 球棒 。

對 我 們 來說 ，除了 他 ，還有 誰 會 做 這種 事 呢 ?他 的 英語 講 得 並不 好 ，是 個 「圈外人 」。

問題 是 ，他 並 沒有 拿走 那些 球棒 ，甚至 不 知道 那 是 做 什麼 用 的 。

最後 ，事情 是 完善 地 解決 了 。

我 自己 是 在 大約 搬到 加拿大 一年 多 之後 才 變成 「圈內人 」的 ，

這 件 事 一直 讓 我 牢記 :

人們 常常 會 不 加 思索 地 群聚 在 一起 ，並且 拒絕 外人 的 參與 。

但是 ，「接納 」是 個 雙向 道 。

「圈內人 」或許 會 在 一 開始 時 對 新 來 的 「圈外人 」表示 抗拒 ，

但 接納 也 同時 決定 於 圈 外 人 是否 有 足夠 的 冒險 精神 ，會 努力 去 爭取 被 接納 。

通常 ，只要 我 克服 了 種種 顧慮 ，並且 努力 去 爭取 對方 的 接納 ，

縱使 彼此 屬於 不同 的 語言 圈子 ，對方 的 反應 往往 比 我 想象 要 來得 親切 、熱誠 。

我 相信 ，那些 關於 新來者 因為 努力 不夠 而 失去 機會 的 例子 ，是 要 比 他們 被 排斥 的 例子 多 得 多 。

一個 學習 語言 的 人 ，從 定義 上 來說 ，是 個 圈 外 人 ，來自 一個 不同 的 語言 族群 ，你 必須 冒 些 風險 去 贏取 接納 。

這是 學習 語言 的 首要 原則 :具有 冒險 精神 。

這 法則 對 我 有效 ，而 法語 便是 我 的 第一個 語言 探險 。

===蒙特利爾 的 兩個 隔離 區 ===

在 一九五零 年代 ，成長 在 講 英語 的 蒙特利爾市 西區 的 人 ，其 生活 型態 與 同 是 講 英語 的 北美 大 陸 其它 各 地 其實 相差 不 多 。

為了 表示 對 新 祖國 的 投入 ，我 的 父母 決定 與 我 們 兄弟 兩 人 只 講 英語 。

我 上 英語 學校 、結交 講 英語 的 朋友 、收聽 英語 廣播節目 、還有 收看 英語 電視 等等 。

結果 是 ，一直 到 一九六二 年 我 十七歲 的 時候 ，我 僅只 說 英語 。

不錯 ，我們 在 學校 要 上 法語 課 。

我 通過 了 所有 的 法語 課程 ，而且 成績 很 好 。

但是 ，在 真實 的 世界 裡 ，我 還是 無法 有效 運用 法語 。

當時 ，蒙特利爾 約 有 一百萬 講 英語 的 人口 ，他們 大多 不 想 用 法語 去 跟 那些 講 法語 的 兩百多萬 個 同胞 溝通 。

英語 是 當時 的 商務 用語 ，也 是 北美 大陸 最 主要 的 語言 。

我 從善如流 ，我們 一直 很少 去 注意 那些 就 住 在 周遭 的 多數 法語 人口 。

現在 ，這 聽起來 似乎 很 不尋常 ，但 在 當時 ，如果 把 蒙特利爾 的 情形 稱做 「兩個 隔離區 」，卻 也 十分 恰當 (恰）。

我 必須 指出 ，在 過去 的 四十年 裡 ，情形 已經 改變 了 。

原本 只 講 英語 的 蒙特利爾 人 ，現 已 成 了 加拿大 最大 的 雙語 人口 。

由於 魁北克 省 政治 局勢 的 改變 ，法語 也 變得 重要 而且 具有 特別 的 作 用 。

其 結果 :蒙特利爾 成 了 一個 充滿 活力 、別樹一幟 的 城市 了 。

我 要 提到 的 重點 是 :很 明顯 ，能 居住 在 第二 語言 的 生活 環境 裡 是 有 許多 好處 。

但是 ，這 並 不 保證 你 能 學會 這個 語言 。

學習者 必須 對 所 要 學習 的 語言 文化 有 個 積極 的 態度 ，

假如 你 只 依賴 課堂 上 的 教導 ，你 就 無法 學得 如何 與 人 交流 ，

因為 課堂 上 的 訓練 只 為 通過 考試 ，

只有 真正 想 去 與 另 一個 文化 交流 的 強烈 慾望 ，才 能 保證 學有所成 。

在 十七歲 的 時候 ，我 進入 麥吉爾 大學 就讀 。

有 門 課 是 有關 法國 的 文明 ，可 說 是 我 的 啟蒙 。

我 發現 那 門 課 十分 引 人 ，突然 之間 ，我 對 法國 的 文學 和 戲劇 大 感興趣 ，

接著 對 法國 的 歌手 、食物 、還有 整個 文化 的 風格 都 變得 很 有 興趣 。

我 忽然間 應對 的 是 真正 的 語言 和 真正 的 人 。

我們 的 老師 是 法國人 ，不 像 我 高中 時 那個 講 英語 卻 教 法語 的 老師 。

我們 採用 的 書本 是 真正 的 法文 書籍 ， 不是 專門 用來 敎 人 學習 法語 而 特別 設計 的 教科書 。

也許 ，這 一切 對 我 都 還 很 新鮮 的 緣故 ，法國 文化 比起 我 成長 其中 講 英語 的 北美 文化 ，似乎 更 自由 、也 更 自然 。

那 是 個 極 具 異國情調 的 新世界 ，我 忽然間 想要 學習 法語 。

我 到 法語 劇院 、結交 講 法語 的 朋友 、開始 閱讀 法文 報紙 、並且 收聽 法語 廣播 。

我 開始 注意 那些 法語 同胞 關心 的 議題 ，

透過 參加 會議 和 討論 ，我 的 法語 技巧 自然地 進步 了 ，

也 開始 瞭解 講 法語 的 魁北克 人 有 什麼 期待 與 委屈 。

約 有 六百萬 講 法語 的 魁北克 人 ，是 十七 世紀 數萬 個 殖民者 的 後裔 。

他們 逐漸 形成 了 一個 保守 而 內聚 的 社群 ，

這是 面對 當時 影響力 日漸 茁壯 的 北美 英語 族群 ，所 採取 的 一 種 自我 保護 的 手段 。

法語 和 天主教 是 他們 彼此 認同 的 兩 大 支柱 。

他們 對 教育 和 現代化 社會 所 採取 的 保守 態度 ，使 他們 在 與 講 英語 的 加拿大 人 競爭 的 時候 ，處於 極 不利 的 局面 。

這 情形 甚至 在 他們 自己 的 魁北克省 境內 也 是 如此 。

當然 ，魁北克 內 講 英語 的 人口 雖 居 少數 ，卻 樂於 利用 他們 的 這個 弱點 ，趁機 支配 了 所有 的 經濟 活動 。

雖然 講 法語 的 族群 仍然 掌控 政治 權力 ，但 在 自己 的 領地 上 卻 仍 屬 第二 等 公民 。

最 讓 他們 痛心 的 ， 是 法語 地位 的 低下 。

自 一九六零 年 開始 ，一 場 愈演愈烈 的 基於 法語 種種 權益 的 民族 運動 和 一個 旨在 建設性 改進 世俗化 和 現代化 的 社會活動 為 魁北克省 帶來 重大 改變 。

雖然 有些 保護 法語 的 事例 顯得 有些 過度 ，但 大部分 的 改變 仍然 值得 肯定 。

加拿大 的 法語 社區 ， 尤其 是 魁北克省 ， 有 其 獨特 的 性格 ， 盡力 保護 自己 的 文化 特性 是 應該 的 。

正如 新 移民 不斷 地 進入 並 影響 英語 加拿大 ，新 的 移民 也 繼續 加入 法語 社區 ，並 隨著 社區 的 演進 而 帶來 清新 的 影響 。

===我 主導 自己 的 學習 ===

法語 是 我 第一個 開始 認真 學習 的 語言 。

我 並不 確定 自己 以後 能夠 講 得 多 流利 ，也 沒有 自信 能 講 得 像 道地 的 法國人 一樣 好 。

自信 是 以後 才 出現 的 。

更 久 之後 ，當 我 開始 學習 其它 的 語言 ，我 總是 有 信心 自己 可以 學到 暢所欲言 。

因為 一旦 精通 了 一種 新 語言 ，你 就 會 有 足夠 的 信心 去 掌握 其它 的 語言 。

你 一面 學 ，一面 建立 起 自己 的 信心 。

我 並沒有 採取 傳統 的 學習 方式 去 把 語法 弄得 盡善盡美 ，

這 反而 使 我 能夠 把 法語 講 得 更 流暢 。

語法 的 完 不 完美 其實 並 不 重要 ，只有 溝通 才 重要 。

自此 之後 ，我 不再 討厭 學習 語言 了 。

我 閱 讀 自己 喜歡 的 書 ，即使 我 不是 十分 理解 大部分 的 內容 ;

我 與 那些 引起 我 興趣 的 人 交談 ，設法 去 瞭解 他們 ，也 試著 讓 他們 瞭解 我 ;

我 對 與 文化 有關 的 事物 最 感興趣 ，也 開始 去 欣賞 新 語言 的 聲音 與 結構 。

當 你 把 對 新 語言 的 排斥 態度 轉為 欣賞 的 態度 ，

那 語言 就 不再 顯得 稀奇古怪 ，而是 措詞 造句 的 另 一 種 獨特 表達 方式 。

到 了 這個 時候 ，你 就 步上 成為 語言 家 的 大道 了 。

我 主導 自己 的 學習 ，而 不 倚賴 老師 的 督導 。

老師 只是 我 在 蒙特利爾 能夠 取得 的 許多 資源 之 一 。

突然之間 ，由於 沒有 考試 ，沒有 老師們 問 問題 ，也 沒有 語法 操練 ，

我 的 法語 技能 向前 邁進 了 一 大步 ，也 實現 了 我 在 語言 上 的 第一次 突破 。

我 能 感覺 出 無論 是 發音 、理解力 、還有 詞句 表達 的 流利 程度 ，都 大有 改進 。

這 實在 令人 興奮 。

我 到 自己 感興趣 的 各種 場合 去 聽 法語 、用 法語 跟 自己 交談 、

並 盡 我 所能 去 模仿 正確 的 發音 。

即使 有時 我 並不 理解 對方 在 講 些 什麼 的 ，

或是 有 困難 表達 自己 的 意思 ，我 都 不會 氣餒 。

我 全力以赴 ，而且 喜歡 與 人 溝通 。

沒有 什麼 會 讓 我 回頭 。

走出 課堂 去 學習 語言 ，終 使 我 的 夢想 成真 。

我 掌握 住 這個 中心 原則 :真實 環境 的 學習 ，

永遠 比 人為 的 仿真 情境 (如 操演 、訓練 、或 特意 為 學習者 設計 的 教材 等 )要 有效 得 多 。

請 把 時間 用 在 真實 、有趣 的 交談 上面 ，這 是 比 任何 正式 課堂 更 好 的 語言 學習 環境 。

此外 ，我 還 發現 另 一個 重要 的 學習 原則 :

學習者 必須 主導 自己 的 學習 ，親自 找出 語言 、人 、還有 內容 。

我 ，學習者 ，必須 找出 即將 派上用場 的 字 或 詞彙 。

往往 ，這 都 是 由 老師 或 教科書 來 決定 你 要 學 些 什麼 字 ，

這些 字 其實 都 不 重要 ，而且 很快 就 會 全都 忘掉 了 。
