4989 American Life Podcast, ep .196/ 英語 に は 無い 日本 語

ep.196/英語 に は 無い 日本語

まずは 、悔しい と いう か 情けない ご 報告 な のです が 、

少し 前 の エピソード で お 話し した Tax に ついて の ボランティア 用 の トレーニング 、勉強会 に 参加 している よ 、と いう こと なんです が 、

はい 、挫折 しました 。 ギブアップ です 。

ギブアップ と いう か 、 ギブアップ な ん です けど 、 到底 今 の 私 で は ボランディア と して 活動 する の は 難しい か な と 思いました 。

でも 、税金 の 知識 ゼロ だった 私 が 、少し です けど 基本的な こと とか 、専門用語 とか 、あと 各種 フォーム とか に ついて 勉強 できた こと は よかった ですし 、

何より も 挑戦 する こと に 意義 が ある ので 、行動 出来たって こと が よかった かなって 思っています 。

全然 知ら ない ところ に 自分 1人 で 申し込んで 参加 して 、新しい 人 と 出会って 、

褒める レベル が 低い です が 、自分 的に は 、それ だけ でも 頑張った な と 思います 。

今年 は 挫折 して しまいました が 、

来年 、また この 時期 余裕 が あれば 、参加 できれば いい な と 思って います 。

いや ー 、 ま ぁね 、 中途半端に 終わって しまった 感 は 否め ず 、

さらに は 前 に も 話しました が 、日本人 の 友人 は 実際に トレーニング を して 、テスト も 受けて クリアして ボランティア も やってって 経験 を している ので 、

それ に 比べて 、あー 、私 は ダメ だ なぁ 。 って ちょっと 凹んだ んです が

何事 も 経験 な ので 、当たって 砕けろ な ところ は 自分 で 評価 したい と 思います 。

そう 、結構 私 、色々な こと に 手 を 出し すぎ 、手 を つけ すぎ で 、全部 が 中途半端に なって いく 説 が ある んです よね 。

色々 やり たく なっちゃって 。

やって み ない と わから ない 、実際 に 動き出して み ない と わから ない 、経験 して み ない と わから ない 、って タイプ な ので 、

色々な こと に 手 を 出しちゃう んです よ 。

今回 の tax の 勉強 以外 に も

そう 、わかってます 。 日本語 オノマトペ 、名付けて japa まと ぺも ね 、これ から 動いて いく ぞ ー ！ っと お 話した んです が 、なかなか 動かず に 時間 が 過ぎて しまってます 。

学校 の こと や タップダンス の こと とかも ある 中 で 、

更に 最近 は ジャパニーズレストラン でも バイト を 始めて しまって 、

そんなに 手 を 出して 、詰め込んで どう する んだ ！ って 感じ な んです けど 、ま ぁ 自分 の 納得 の いく ように 色々 やってきたい と 思います 。

これ から も 、これ 始めました ！ これ に 興味 あります ！ あれ やりたい ！ と かって たくさん 皆さん に シェア する か と 思います が 、温かく 見守って いただける と 幸いです 。

さて 、今日 の エピソード で は 、英語 の 話 の コーナー で 英語 に は ない 日本語 に ついて お話します 。

その他 、 最近 の うち の アパート に ついて も お 話 する 予定 です 。

アメリカ 生活 と は 切って も 切れ ない 大きな 大きな 大きな 壁 、英語 に ついて お 話して いる コーナー です 。 に

今日 は です ね 、英語 に は 無い 日本語 に ついて お話し したい んです が 、

ふと ね 、今回 これ ポッドキャスト で 話そうって 思いついた の は 、

単語 と か フレーズ と か 辞書 に 載って ない 、英語 に は ない 単語 ・フレーズ とかって いう 日本語 で は なくて 、

もっと 、何て いう んだろう 「感覚 」的な 、スラング に 属する の か な 、表現 なんですけど 、

「 さん 付け 」 です 。

旦那 さん 、彼氏 さん 、生徒 さん 、親御さん 、みたいな 。

「さん 付け 」表現 な んです けど 。

ね 、英語 で は こういう 表現 無い で すよ ね 。

ま ぁ ぶっちゃけ 、この 「さん 付け 」表現 が なくて 困る って こと は 無い んです が 、なんか ちょっと 違和感 が ある みたいな 。

一番 感じる の が 「旦那さん 」です か ね 。

日本 だ と 、誰 か の 旦那さん の こと は 「旦那さん 」って 言います よね 、

すごく 仲 良い 友達 の 旦那さん の こと は 、「そういえば 、うたこ の 旦那 は 元気 ー ？ 」みたいな 感じ で 「旦那 」って 呼び捨て って いう か 、

こういう 時 に も 呼び捨て って 言う んです かね 、

その 「旦那 」って 「旦那 」呼び する こと も あります が 、

ほとんど の 場合 は 、知り合い 程度 でも 、仲 が 良い 友達 同士 でも 、

「うた この 旦那さん 」「お隣 の 旦那さん 」「鈴木さん の 旦那さん 」って 感じ で 「旦那さん 」じゃ 無い ですか 。

で 、面白い の が 、英語 で 日本人 以外 の 人 と 話している 時 は 気に ならない んです 。

例えば 、 Cathy さん と 話して て 、 Cathy さん の 旦那 さん の こと を 言う 時 に 、「how's your husband ?」って 、ただ husband 呼び する こと に なんの 抵抗 も ない んです が 、

これ が 、何 人 か の グループ で 英語 で 話して て 、そこ に 日本 人 の 友達 や 知り合い も 混ざって てる 場合 は 、

なんか 旦那 さん の こと を your husband ,her husband って 呼ぶ の に ちょっと 強く 聞こえる って いう か 、

えー 、分かります ？

でも わかった 。

今 想像 して て 思った の が 、その 対象 と なる husband が 、誰 の husband か が ポイント な の かも 。

その 何 人 か の グループ で 話して た と して も 、

例えば Emily さん も その グループ その 場 に いて 、 Emily さん の 旦那 さん の こと を 話す 時 に your husband ,her husband って 言う の は 自然な んです が 、

日本人 の 方 の 旦那 さん を 指す 時 は 、 面 と 向かって 「 your husband は ？ 」みたいに 言う の は ちょっと 抵抗 が ある と いう か 、偉そうに 聞こえる から か 、わかんない 、上から に 感じる って 言う か 。

そう な んです よ 、英語 で 話してる んだ から 仕方ない じゃん 、そういう もん だよ って こと は わかる んですけど 、

なんか 。 。 。 。

理解 して くれる 方 います か ね ？

別に 悩む ほど 気 に なる 、違和感 が ある って こと で は ない んです が 、

なんか 抵抗 が ある 、みたいな 。

日本 人 と 英語 で 話して て 、その 話してる 相手 の 旦那さん の こと や 、その 場 に いない 他 の 日本人 の 旦那さん の こと であっても

何となく husband だ と 抵抗 が あって 、

でも 、同じく 日本人 と 英語 で 話してる シチュエーション でも 、会話 の 内容 が 日本人 以外 の 人 の 旦那さん だと 別に 何も 思わない って いう ね 。

逆に 、日本人 が 私 以外 いない 状態 で 、その 場 に いない 日本人 の 誰 か の 旦那さん の こと 「 Yuki's husband 」とか 呼んで も 別に 問題 無い かも 。

驚く ほど 説明 が 下手 です が 、伝わってます か ね 。

っと 考える と 、これ は 、

周り の 日本人 から の 目 を 気にしている と 言う こと ですか ね 。

対象 が 日本人 だ と 失礼 に 聞こえる んじゃないのか …、偉そうに 聞こえる んじゃないのか …みたいな 、

変に 気 に して しまうって こと です よね 。

こういう の も 自意識 過剰 って 言う んです か ？

わかって る んです よ 、誰 も ね 、そんな こと 気に して ないし 、

だって 英語 な んだ もん 、「husband さん 」って いう 言い方 は ない し 、仕方ない って 言う か そういう もの わかる んです けど 。

「旦那 さん 」の 他 に 、最近 私 が 違和感 を 感じた の は 、「生徒 さん 」って 言えない って いう こと です 。

私 は ダンス の インストラクター を やってる んです が 、

日本 に いた 頃 は 、自分 より も 歳 上 の 生徒 の こと を 話す 時 は 「生徒 さん 」って 言って て 、

「 この前 、 生徒 さん が 言って た ん だ けど さ ー 」 と か 、

「 平日 昼間 の クラス は 、 主婦 の 生徒 さん が 多い かな ー 」 と か 。

アメリカ 、こっち でも 、子供 の クラス の 生徒 の 話 を する とき は 「my students 」と か でも 何も 感じ 無い です けど 、

大人 クラス で 、 しかも 自分 より も だいぶ 歳 上 の 生徒 さん と か だ と 、「 student 」って 呼ぶ の は 何だか おこがましい なって 。

この 「生徒 さん 」に 関して は 、さっき の 「旦那 さん 」と は ちょっと 違って 、

会話 を 一緒に して いる 日本 人 が どう 感じる の か 気に なる …と か で は なくて 、

誰 と 話して て も 、ちょっと 違和感 が ある 気 が します 。

例えば 、ダンス スタジオ の オーナー と レッスン に ついて 話して いて 、

「 何 曜日 の 何 時 の クラス は 今 何人 くらい 生徒 さん が いて 、 生徒 さん の レベル は この くらい で ー 」 みたいな 話 を して いる とき に 、

student呼び を する の は なんか 、なんか 違和感 が あって 。

いや 、実際 私 の 生徒 だ し 、私 は インストラクター なんです が 、なんか ね 。

伝わります か ？

この 話 を うち の 夫 に したら 、

「言いたい こと は わかる けど 、その 感覚 は 俺 に は 無い 。」 と 言わ れました 。

どう です か 、皆さん 。

同じ ように 、ちょっと なんか 突っかかる なぁって 感じる 方 います か ね ？

日本語 を 勉強 されて いる 方 も この ポッドキャスト 聴いて くれて います が 、英語 が 母国語 や 別の 言語 でも 同じ ような 「さん付 」文化 みたいな の が 無い 言葉 で 生活 している 人 に とって は 、

意味 が わから ない 話 な んでしょう ね 。

でも 、例えば 韓国 とか 、結構 上下関係 しっかり している イメージ があります けど 、どう なんですかね 、

誰 か の 旦那さん の 話 を する 時 、歳上 の 生徒さん の 話 を する 時 に 、表現 に 抵抗 が ある とかって ある んですかね ？

あと は まだ 私 初心者 です けど スペイン語 とかも 、結構 目上 の 人 へ の 話し方 って 違ったり する ので 、

ま ぁ 今回 の ような 旦那さん 、生徒さん の ような 「さん付 」文化 と は 違う こと でも 、

ちょっと 、 もう 少し 丁寧に 言いたい ん だ けど 、 英語 に は その 表現ない な ーってっこ と が あったり する ん でしょう ね 。

と いう こと で 今回 の 英語 の 話 の コーナー で は 、英語 に は ない 日本語 の 表現 で 「さん 付け 」表現 に ついて お話し して みました 。

★うち の アパート 、救急車 よく 来すぎ 問題

最近 気づいた んです が 、うち の アパート って 頻繁に 救急車 や 消防車 が 来る んです よ 、

2週間 に 1回 、多い 時 は 週 に 1回 、来る んじゃないかって いう 。

毎回 な の か ちょっと わから ないで す けど 、

アメリカ って 救急 車 が 来る 時 って 、消防 車 も 一緒に 来る んです よね 。

私 の 家 、私 の 部屋 ？ なんて いう んです か 、うち の ユニット が 道路 に 面して いる ので 、

救急車 や 消防車 が 来る と 赤く ピカピカ 光ってる ので 、すぐ わかる んです けど 、

少なくとも 、その 救急車 と 消防車 2台 来る ので 、何事 か と 。 何 か 大きな 事件 で も 起こった の かしら って 心配に なる んです よね 。

私 野次馬 気質 が ある ので 、基本的に は 毎回 とりあえず 外 に 出て 、

どの 家 に 来た の か な ー 、 何 が あった の か な ーって 確認 する よう に してる ん です けど 、

うち の アパート そんなに 部屋 数 が 多い わけで は ない んです けど 、

それ に しては 救急車 が 来る 頻度 が 多い んです よね 。

私 の 野次馬 調査 に よる と 、ここ 最近 は 、特定 の お家 に 何度 か 来てる みたいで 、

一 度 救急車 に 患者さん が 乗り込む ところ を 見かけた んです が 、

怪我 と か で は なくて 、病気 って いう か 、体調 が 悪く なって 救急車 を 呼んだ っぽい って 感じ だった んです よね 。

でも 、4回 くらい 連続 で 同じ 家 が 呼んでる みたいで 、

ま ぁ 本当に ね 、緊急 で 調子 が 悪く なった 場合 は もちろん 救急車 必要です けど 、

なんか 来てる 救急 隊員 の人 たち の 様子 を 見て いる と 、 ちょっと 慣れてる と いう か 、 それほど 緊張 感 を 感じない と いう か 、

もう 常連 化 し つつ ある って 感じ な んです か ね 。

その 最近 良く 救急車 を 呼んで いる お宅 以外 の アパート 内 の ユニット に も 結構 救急車 来て て 、

そう 、ちょうど 少し 前 に うち の 夫 が 足 が 痛くて ER に 行ったって 話 を した 時 に 救急車 の 話 を したんです が 、

アメリカ は 日本 と 違って 救急車 、お金 が かかります から ね 、

それ を 考える と 、救急車 を 呼ぶ ほど の まじ で ヤバい 状態 って の が 、うち の アパート で は 良く 発生してる んだ なって 思う と 、

ちょっと 、うち の アパート の 住民 たち が 特殊な の か 、

他の 場所 でも 同じ ような 感じ な の か 、ちょっと 疑問 です よね 。

そう いえば この 前 ちょっと 嬉しい こと が あって 、

うち の アパート って ちょっと 造り が 特殊 で 、部屋 の 配置 が わかりにくい んです 。

アパート の 前 まで 来た ものの 、各 家 、何 号 室 、何 番 の 家 は どこ だって いう の が わかりづらくて 、初めて 来た 人 は みんな 探す のに 苦労 する んです よ 。

これ も 結構 前 の エピソード で 話した んです が 、

コロナ が 始まって シャットダウン して いた 頃 に 、 Uber Eats とか DoorDushとかの利用度が上がったじゃないですか、

うち の アパート の 人たち も 結構 利用 して いた みたいで 、配達員 の 人たち が 頻繁に 来てた んです よね 。

で 、部屋 の 位置 が 分かりにくい ので 、みんな 迷子 に なって 、

我が家 が ちょうど 聞きやすい 位置 に ある みたいで 、迷子 に なった 人 は みんな 我が家 を ピンポン して くる んです よね 。

「 何 番 の 家 を 探してる ん です けど 、 どこ です か ー 」って 。

当時 私 も 、どこ が 何 番 の 部屋 、家 な の か わかって なくて 、聞かれて も 即答 でき なかった んです よ 。

そこ で 、一度 各 家 の 前 まで 行って 部屋 番号 を 確認して 、

更に イラストレーター で 簡単な アパートメントマップ を 作成 した んです 。

それ 以降 、 Uber eats の 人 とか に 聞かれたら 、その マップ を 見せながら 、

何 番 は ここ だ よ ーって 教えて あげる ように なったら とても スムーズに なった と いう こと が ありました 。

なかなか 良い こと を して いる なぁって 、その 時 は 思った んです が 、

ま ぁ それ から ね 、 Uber Eats を 使う 人 が 減ってきた の か 、

でも 、時々 今 でも 配達 に 来てる の 見る から 、配達 する 側 の 人 が うち の アパート に 慣れた んですかね 、

ともかく 、もう ここ 1年 以上 、我が家 に 「何 番 の 部屋 は どこ ですか 」と 聞いて くる 人 は いなくて 、

その 作った マップ が 活躍 する こと も なかった んです が 、

Uber の 代わり に 、救急車 消防車 が 来る 頻度 が なぜか 増えて 、

良く 来て いる ので 基本的に は その 救急隊員 の 人たち は 部屋番号 や 、アパート の 構造 を わかってる みたいな んです が 、

たまに 、うち の アパート に 初めて くる 救急 隊 の 、グループ って 言う んですかね 、班 ？ が あったり する と 、

「え 、何 号 室 は どこ だ 、どう やって 行く んだ ？ 」みたいな 感じ に なって て 、

で 、ほら 、私 野次馬 が 趣味 な ので 、外 に 様子 を 見 に 行く じゃないですか 。

だから その 特定 の 部屋 の 場所 とか 、そこ まで の 行き方 を 救急隊 の 人 に 聞かれたり するんですけど 、

この 前 久しぶりに 聞かれた ので 私 も 咄嗟に 、 その 番号 の 部屋 が どこ だ か か わから なくて 、

で 、私 の 作った マップ が うち の 玄関 入って すぐに 置いて あった ので 、それ を 持ってきて 見せ ながら 、

「あー 、何 番 は ここ だ よ ー 」って 教えて あげた んです よ 。

あー 、ずっと 使って なかった けど 、やっぱり この マップ 、たまに 役 に 立つ なぁ 。

良かった 良かった 人助け が できた わ 。

って 思って た んです よ 。

そ したら 数 分 後 に ピンポーン って 救急 隊 の 人 が 戻って 来て 、

「さっき 見せて くれた アパート の マップ 、もしも コピー が あれば もらえません か ？ 」

って 聞か れた んです よ 。

「この アパート 迷っちゃう こと が 時々 ある から 、この マップ は 役立つ よ 、ありがとう 」

って 言って 帰って いきました 。

すごく ない ？ めっちゃ 私 の 手作り マップ 役立ってる ん です けど ー ！

謎 の こだわり で 、フォント と かね 、部屋 番号 の 文字 の 向き と かも 色々 考えて 作った マップ な ので 、

こう やって 日 の 目 を 見る 日 が 来て 、嬉しかった です 。

あ 、で 、そうそう 、また 話 が 飛ぶ んです が 、

救急 車 が ね 、良く 来る うち の アパート な んです が 、

年末 に 、夜中 、2時 とか 2時半 とか に 救急車 が 来てた こと が あって 、

寝室 の 窓 から もめっちゃ 救急車 の ピカピカ が 見えて 、

こんな 夜中 に どうした ん だろう って 思って 、

その 時 は うち の 夫 が 外 に 様子 を 見 に 行った んです けど 、

そ したら どうやら うち の 斜め 上 に 住んで いる 人 の ところ に 来た らしい と 。

で 、その 下 に 住む オバちゃん 曰く 、

彼 氏 な の か な 、彼 氏 が 夜中 まで 仕事 を してて 、で 家 に 帰ってきたら 、その 彼女 が (そこ に 住んでいる 住人 です ね )が 浴室 で 倒れていた だか で 、

ちょっと 、もう 危ない 、命 が ちょっと 危ない かも しれない 、みたいな そういう 状況 らしい …と いう こと だった んです 。

ただ ね 、その 夫 が 話 を 聞いた オバちゃん が 、元々 何 を 言っている の か 聞き取る のが 難しい オバちゃん で 、

はっきり した こと は わから なかった んです が 、

とにかく 、救急 車 で 運ばれた の は 、うち の 斜め 上 に 住んでた 女 の 人 で 、どうやら 危険な 状況 らしい …

私 、その 女 の 人 、名前 は 知ら ない んです が 、会えば 挨拶 する し 、

あー 、 あの人 か 、 大丈夫 かな ーって 思って た ん です 。

浴室 で 倒れて た なんて 、 なんか 急に 発作 でも 起こした の か な ー と か 、 あと は 、 ま ぁ ちょっと そういう 雰囲気 が あった ので 、 薬 多め に やっちゃった の かな ー と か 、

私 の ビジネス で は ないです が 、

何 が あった んだ ろー と 思って いました 。

で 、その 女 の 人 の 車 が ずっと 駐車場 に 停めて あって 、全く 動いている 気配 が ない ので 、

あー 、 まだ 病院 に いる の か な ー 、 ずっと 入院 して いる の か な ー

その 救急 車 が 来た の が 年 末 で 、

もう ね 、1ヶ月 以上 経って て 、その ね 、家族 が 来て …みたいな の も 見 ないで すし 、

ま ぁ 、斜め 上 の 家 って いって も 部屋 の 入り口 が 我が家 から は 離れた ところ に ある ので 実際 に 人 が 来て いた か どうか は わから ない んです が 、

ともかく 、車 が ずっと 止まって て 。

で 、そう 、なんで 気 に なって たかって 、その 車 が ちょっと 斜めに 止まって て 、

番 長 止め まで は いか ないで す けど 、 結構 駐車 スペース の 白線 に かかってる かな ー くらい の 。

アメリカ ある ある です よ ね 、本当に みんな 駐車 が 適当で 、

結構 斜め だったり 、左右 に 大きく 寄って 止まったり して ても 気に しない って いう か 、

いや 、あんた は 気 に しなくて も 、その 横 に 止める 別の 人 が 迷惑 する でしょ ！ ！ って いう ね 。

今回 の 、その 救急車 で 運ばれた 女 の 人 の 車 が 斜めに 止まってて 、更に それ が 昔 の アメ車っぽい 長い やつ なんです よね 。

で 、運 悪く 、私 が 車 を 止める 時 に その 女 の 人 の 車 の 横 しか 空いて ない こと が 多くて 、

毎回 ちょっと この 車 斜め すぎ でしょ 、止め にくい なぁ 。 もう 。 って 思って た んです 。

だから 、まだ この 車 動か ない なぁ 。 あの 女 の 人 は 大丈夫 な の か な ーって 、ちょっと ね 気 に して たんです よ 。

数 日 前 、うち の アパート の ゴミ 捨て場 で 、その 女 の 人 の 家 の 下 に 住んで いる オバちゃん 、

そう 、うち の 夫 が 話 を 聞いた 、何 を 話している の か いまいち 聞き取りづらい オバちゃん に ね 、会った んです 。

だから 、 何 か 知ってる かな ー と 思って 、

「 ね ー ね ー 、 you の 上 に 住んで いる 、 女 の人 、 この 前 救急 車 で 運ばれた 、

あの 人 どう なった か 知って る ？ 」

「 oh , she died 」って 言われて 、

へ ？ 死んじゃった の ？ って ビックリ しました 。

そ したら 、その オバちゃん の お喋り 熱 に 火 が ついちゃって 、

良く いる じゃないですか 、刑事 モノ の ドラマ で ご近所さん に ついて の 情報通 の オバちゃん 。 あと は 色々な 噂 話 を 知っている オバさん 。 あんな 感じ です 。

私 が 「えー 、死んじゃった の ー ？ 」って 反応 したら 、

「 you know what ? ね ー 知ってる ？ 」って 話 始めて 、

いや ー 、 ともかく 、 その オバちゃん の 話 が 分かり にくくて 、 いまいち 要点 が 掴め なかった ん です が 、

オバちゃん 曰く 、

その 彼女 が 浴室 で 倒れて いる の を 発見して 救急車 を 呼んだ 彼 氏 ？ が 怪しい と 。

彼 氏 なんだか 、彼 氏 じゃ ない んだ か よく わから ない んです けど 、

元々 その 男 の 人 は 、この 辺 の エリア で 友人 宅 を 転々 と している ような 人 で 、

今回 その 亡くなった 女 の 人 の ところ に 少し 前 に 転がり込んだ んだ 。 みたいな 。

で 、オバちゃん の 話 に は たくさんの 登場人物 が 出てきて たんです けど 、

Stephanyが ね 、なんちゃらかんちゃら で 、そして Lilyも なんちゃらかんちゃら した んだ けど 、

だけ でも その 男 の 人 が うん ちゃ らかん ちゃら で 。

みたいな 。

ともかく 、その辺 の 人間関係 を めぐる ドラマ が あった らしい んです けど 、私 は その 名前 を 言われて も それ が 誰 なの か わからない し 、

いまいち 何 を 言って いる の か わから ず 、

オバちゃん の 話 は 長く 、いつ 切り上げよう か なって 思って いたら 、

「 Then , that night …. で 、 その 夜 ね 、」って 、 いきなり 興味 を 引く ような 話し 方 に なって 、

お ーーー 、 やっと その 疑惑 の 夜 の 話 を する の か ！

って 、身 を 乗り出して 聞いた んです けど 、

やっぱり いまいち オバちゃん が 何 を 言って いる の か わから なくて 、

かろうじて 聞き 取れた の は 、

その 男 の 人 、彼氏 だ か なんだか わからない 、発見者 です ね 、

男 の 人 は 夜中 まで 仕事 して 帰って きた って 言ってる けど 、それ は どう か な 、そう じゃない かも 。 って こと と 、
