10 things you need to know about living in Barcelona (1)

Guardo il cielo. Sono di nuovo a Barcellona – penso. Dopo 7 lunghi anni. L'ultima immagine che ho di Barcellona è l'addio triste all'aeroporto, alla volta di Roma, con ancora tutte le immagini dei miei 6 mesi passati lì. Non so precisamente per quale motivo abbia aspettato così tanto tempo prima di tornare, in fondo la città è molto vicina a Roma, basta un'ora e mezza d'aereo, e i collegamenti sono frequenti e a buon prezzo. Sarà perché il tempo vola, sarà perché non ho avuto tempo o non ci ho pensato più, ma in fondo sono solo scuse. Forse la vera ragione per cui non sono più tornato è perché sapevo che ritornare mi avrebbe fatto uno strano effetto, e volevo custodire intatti i ricordi di quei 6 mesi, non li volevo “sporcare” con le nuove sensazioni e pensieri che inevitabilmente avrei avuto tornando qui. Ma i pensieri non si sporcano, le esperienze si sommano, e si avvolgono l'una con l'altra e si completano. L'unica cosa sicura della nostra vita é che tutto cambia E ovviamente, sono cambiato anche io, in questi 7 anni. A volte ho paura di cambiare, di diventare diverso, ho paura di perdere i miei ricordi, talvolta vorrei fermare il tempo, ma il tempo è come l'acqua di una cascata che ti scorre fra le dita della mano. Non la puoi fermare, non ce n'è modo. E allora tanto vale farla scorrere fra le mani. Il tempo in parte sbiadisce i ricordi, e in parte ci aiuta a superare momenti difficili, ma ce ne sono alcuni che rimangono con noi, e anche se sono andati e non torneranno più, fanno parte di noi, ci hanno formato, plasmato, cambiato, e ci hanno reso quello che siamo adesso.

E allora eccomi qui, a Barcellona.

La prima città in cui ho vissuto dopo Roma. È stata una scelta sofferta, andare a vivere all'estero, anche se era per l'Erasmus. Non l'avevo mai fatto. Quando si decide di andare a vivere da qualche parte e cambiare tutto, sulla carta sembra un'avventura straordinaria, ma nella pratica ci sono una serie di ostacoli da affrontare che possono scoraggiare chi non ha la volontà ferma di affrontarli Prima di procedere alle pratiche burocratiche mi veniva in mente la scena del film “L'auberge espagnol”, in cui Romain Duris, l'attore principale, si trasferiva a Barcellona per l'Erasmus – proprio come me – e aveva a che fare con incartamenti di ogni tipo, schede di equipollenza per gli esami, certificati vari. Ma non erano le pratiche burocratiche che impedivano a Romain e a me di partire. Era tutta quella serie di dubbi quasi esistenziali sul dover cambiare il ritmo della propria vita, le abitudini, i posti, le persone. Ti fa pensare alle scelte della vita, ti fa sentire fragile, perché spesso ci sentiamo protetti nel paese e nel mondo in cui viviamo e ci siamo costruiti, e partire sembra un po' dover ricominciare tutto da capo. Ma ricordo in quel periodo di incertezza e dubbi di aver letto la poesia di Martha Medeiros “muore lentamente”. Uno dei passaggi che mi ha colpito di più recitava così:

Lentamente muore chi non capovolge il tavolo,chi è infelice sul lavoro,chi non rischia la certezza per l'incertezza per inseguire un sogno, chi non si permette almeno una volta nella vita, di fuggire ai consigli sensati. A volte leggi un testo o ascolti una canzone e non ci fai troppo caso, a volte invece certe parole o certe frasi significano tutto, e in quel momento hanno significato tutto per me.

E ho deciso di partire verso l'ignoto. Mi ricordo che arrivato a Barcellona agli inizi di febbraio 2008, ho trovato difficoltà a trovare un appartamento.

Quella è la prima cosa urgente da affrontare: cercare un tetto sotto cui vivere E in questo senso, parlare la lingua del paese è di enorme aiuto. Ricordo ancora quando, 2 anni dopo, seduto a Campo de Fiori a Roma sotto la statua di Giordano Bruno, ascoltavo la conversazione disperata di 2 spagnoli, che chiamavano in cerca di una casa, e non riuscivano neanche a comunicare con i padroni di casa. Ricordo la loro frustrazione ma anche la loro gioia quando ho detto loro in spagnolo che potevano restare da me. E tutto grazie al fatto di parlare spagnolo. E ovviamente lo spagnolo mi è stato di grande aiuto nel trovare la casa. Tutto è più facile quando si parla la lingua di un paese, e tutto diventa complicato quando non la si parla. Si dice spesso che basta sapere l'inglese per cavarsela, ma questo non è vero in molti posti d'Europa, in Spagna, Italia, Francia, così come in altri paesi. Dopo aver trovato l'appartamento, condiviso con 2 italiani e 1 ragazza spagnola, ho finalmente cominciato a integrarmi nella vita di Barcellona. Quando, ieri, sono salito sul Parc Guell ad ammirare il panorama, mi sono venuti in mente, di colpo e quasi con prepotenza, tutti i momenti incredibili che ho vissuto lì, dalle cose semplici a quelle più complesse.

Sì, ricordo tutte queste cose Sono rimaste con me.

Ma ora sono una persona diversa rispetto a 7 anni fa, la città è la stessa, ma le persone sono diverse e tante sono diverse anche in me, è cambiato tanto. Abbraccio questo fatto con un filo di nostalgia ma con uno slancio stranamente ritrovato. “Il segreto non è nel pensare al passato o al futuro” – dicono gli Oritentali – ma di concentrarsi sul presente. E su questo pensiero mi dico, rimettendo la penna nel taschino, alzandomi dalla panchina e accennando un sorriso, “Andiamoci a godere la mia nuova, vecchia Barcellona”. E parto così alla volta di Passeig de Gracia e verso il mare.

10 cose da sapere su Barcellona

L'ambiente Barcellona ha un ambiente incredibile, perché è una città artistica che si trova fra mare e montagna, variopinta nella sua umanità e geografia.

A volte sembra di stare in diverse città a seconda di dove ci si muove. Verso il mare, la Rambla, il Born, Barcellona sembra più appartenere ai turisti che ai Barcellonesi Scendendo per la Rambla si sentono decine di lingue percorrendo pochi metri quadrati, mentre più a Nord, verso Gracia e il quartiere ai piedi del Tibidado si riconosce la Barcellona non turistica, e che trovo più autentica. L'ambiente è internazionale a seconda di dove si vuole passare la serata. Nei posti più turistici ovviamente ci si ritrova quasi solo in mezzo a stranieri, mentre i locali di Gracia sono più battuti dagli autoctoni. In generale è una città in cui si possono fare incontri di ogni tipo, e parlare tante lingue è molto facile. A dir la verità ho conosciuto pochi veri Barcellonesi, la maggior parte delle mie frequentazioni, così come a Parigi, erano stranieri che vivevano e vivono a Barcellona. Gli abitnati di Barcellona hanno in comune con i Parigini un certa chiusura nei confronti degli stranieri, sono gelosi della loro cerchia di amicizie, frequentazioni, luoghi di ritrovo, e non è facile entrare a far parte della cercha.

Vita notturna

La vita notturna di Barcellona è variegata come la sua popolazione.

Si può decidere di passare la serata in molti modi diversi. Se si vuole passare una serata fra amici, l'ideale è il quartiere di Gracia, dove è veramente incredibile chiacchierare ai tavoli all'aperto di un bar in una delle tante piazze che costellano il quartiere, oppure semplicemente sulle numerose panchine disponibili un po' dappertutto O anche per terra, in cerchio, magari con bevande e cibi vari da condividere in allegria. Sempre a Gracia c'è una grande quantità di bar. Quello che mi piace di questi bar è che hanno spesso un aspetto spoglio, quasi volutamente trasandato, spesso con un distributore di sigarette piuttosto scalcinato all'ingresso, e con avventori che consumano in maniera allegra, quasi spensierata, spesso in modo rumoroso. C'è un certo stile di stare al bar a Barcellona che no ho trovato né a Roma né a Parigi. Se invece ci si vuole divertire ballando, ci sono numersi locali sul lungo mare, nonché una marea di discoteche e club vari (il più famoso e grande si chiama “Razmataz”). Ho passato delle serate indimenticabili nelle notti di Barcellona, ed è anche grazie all'ambiente libero, c'è una libertà particolare nel modo in cui le persone consumano e a volte divorano la notte 3.

Trasporto pubblico

Il trasporto pubblico è efficiente come quello di Parigi.

La metropolitana ha numerose linee, ed è ben congegnata per servire più o meno la maggior parte del centro urbano. La metro ha addirittura orari al secondo, ed è sempre puntuale e pulita. Gli autobus funzionano regolarmente, e anche in questo caso ad ogni fermata ci sono gli orari che indicano a che ora arriverà il prossimo autobus Sembra una cosa scontata, per un cittadino di molti paesi europei, ma non lo è affatto per un italiano. Ma la particolarità di Barcellona è che oltre alla metro esiste il “ferrocarril”, che è un servizio di treni, nonché “el funicular”, che consente di raggiungere la cima del monte Tibidabo da cui si intravede tutta la città, nonché il Montjuic. In generale, Barcellona è molto più piccola di città come Roma, Parigi o Madrid, ci vuole un'ora a piedi per andare da un capo all'altro del centro urbano, quindi molto spesso non usavo quasi mai la metropolitana, ma preferivo camminare, anche perché andare a piedi è uno dei modi migliori per scoprire la città, inebriarsi di colori, di odori, di persone intorno, di negozi e di monumenti. 4.

Negozi supermercati ristoranti

Devo dire, con una certa nota di ironia, che i negozianti o ristoratori di Barcellona mi ricordano molto quelli italiani.

Non sono né particolarmente gentili né accoglienti, a parte qualche raro caso. In Spagna e Italia non c'è questa cultura del “customer service”, cioè non c'è attenzione al cliente. Il cliente entra perché ha deciso di entrare, ma a volte viene trattato quasi con fastidio per essere entrato. È un atteggiamento a cui a dir la verità non facevo neanche troppo caso fino, abituato come ero all'Italia, ma dopo aver visto come si comportano i negozianti con gli avventori in Francia e in Inghilterra, ha cominciato a darmi fastidio. Essere gentile ed accogliente non costa niente, è una questione di mentalità che si tramanda e che si acquisisce e si finisce per darla per scontata
