Il meschino girava di stanza in stanza, pallido, senza fiato, battendo palma a palma, raccomandandosi a Dio, e a' suoi servitori, che tenessero fermo, che trovassero la maniera di farlo scappare. Ma come, e di dove? Salì in soffitta; da un pertugio, guardò ansiosamente nella strada, e la vide piena zeppa di furibondi; sentì le voci che chiedevan la sua morte; e più smarrito che mai, si ritirò, e andò a cercare il più sicuro e riposto nascondiglio. Lì rannicchiato, stava attento, attento, se mai il funesto rumore s'affievolisse, se il tumulto s'acquietasse un poco; ma sentendo in vece il muggito alzarsi più feroce e più rumoroso, e raddoppiare i picchi, preso da un nuovo soprassalto al cuore, si turava gli orecchi in fretta. Poi, come fuori di sé, stringendo i denti, e raggrinzando il viso, stendeva le braccia, e puntava i pugni, come se volesse tener ferma la porta... Del resto, quel che facesse precisamente non si può sapere, giacché era solo; e la storia è costretta a indovinare. Fortuna che c'è avvezza. Renzo, questa volta, si trovava nel forte del tumulto, non già portatovi dalla piena, ma cacciatovisi deliberatamente. A quella prima proposta di sangue, aveva sentito il suo rimescolarsi tutto: in quanto al saccheggio, non avrebbe saputo dire se fosse bene o male in quel caso; ma l'idea dell'omicidio gli cagionò un orrore pretto e immediato. E quantunque, per quella funesta docilità degli animi appassionati all'affermare appassionato di molti, fosse persuasissimo che il vicario era la cagion principale della fame, il nemico dè poveri, pure, avendo, al primo moversi della turba, sentita a caso qualche parola che indicava la volontà di fare ogni sforzo per salvarlo, s'era subito proposto d'aiutare anche lui un'opera tale; e, con quest'intenzione, s'era cacciato, quasi fino a quella porta, che veniva travagliata in cento modi. Chi con ciottoli picchiava su' chiodi della serratura, per isconficcarla; altri, con pali e scarpelli e martelli, cercavano di lavorar più in regola: altri poi, con pietre, con coltelli spuntati, con chiodi, con bastoni, con l'unghie, non avendo altro, scalcinavano e sgretolavano il muro, e s'ingegnavano di levare i mattoni, e fare una breccia. Quelli che non potevano aiutare, facevan coraggio con gli urli; ma nello stesso tempo, con lo star lì a pigiare, impicciavan di più il lavoro già impicciato dalla gara disordinata dè lavoranti: giacché, per grazia del cielo, accade talvolta anche nel male quella cosa troppo frequente nel bene, che i fautori più ardenti divengano un impedimento.

I magistrati ch'ebbero i primi l'avviso di quel che accadeva, spediron subito a chieder soccorso al comandante del castello, che allora si diceva di porta Giovia; il quale mandò alcuni soldati. Ma, tra l'avviso, e l'ordine, e il radunarsi, e il mettersi in cammino, e il cammino, essi arrivarono che la casa era già cinta di vasto assedio; e fecero alto lontano da quella, all'estremità della folla. L'ufiziale che li comandava, non sapeva che partito prendere. Lì non era altro che una, lasciatemi dire, accozzaglia di gente varia d'età e di sesso, che stava a vedere. All'intimazioni che gli venivan fatte, di sbandarsi, e di dar luogo, rispondevano con un cupo e lungo mormorìo; nessuno si moveva. Far fuoco sopra quella ciurma, pareva all'ufiziale cosa non solo crudele, ma piena di pericolo; cosa che, offendendo i meno terribili, avrebbe irritato i molti violenti: e del resto, non aveva una tale istruzione. Aprire quella prima folla, rovesciarla a destra e a sinistra, e andare avanti a portar la guerra a chi la faceva, sarebbe stata la meglio; ma riuscirvi, lì stava il punto. Chi sapeva se i soldati avrebber potuto avanzarsi uniti e ordinati? Che se, in vece di romper la folla, si fossero sparpagliati loro tra quella, si sarebber trovati a sua discrezione, dopo averla aizzata. L'irresolutezza del comandante e l'immobilità dè soldati parve, a diritto o a torto, paura. La gente che si trovavan vicino a loro, si contentavano di guardargli in viso, con un'aria, come si dice, di me n'impipo; quelli ch'erano un po' più lontani, non se ne stavano di provocarli, con visacci e con grida di scherno; più in là, pochi sapevano o si curavano che ci fossero; i guastatori seguitavano a smurare, senz'altro pensiero che di riuscir presto nell'impresa; gli spettatori non cessavano d'animarla con gli urli. Spiccava tra questi, ed era lui stesso spettacolo, un vecchio mal vissuto, che, spalancando due occhi affossati e infocati, contraendo le grinze a un sogghigno di compiacenza diabolica, con le mani alzate sopra una canizie vituperosa, agitava in aria un martello, una corda, quattro gran chiodi, con che diceva di volere attaccare il vicario a un battente della sua porta, ammazzato che fosse.

- Oibò! vergogna! - scappò fuori Renzo, inorridito a quelle parole, alla vista di tant'altri visi che davan segno d'approvarle, e incoraggito dal vederne degli altri, sui quali, benché muti, traspariva lo stesso orrore del quale era compreso lui. - Vergogna! Vogliam noi rubare il mestiere al boia? assassinare un cristiano? Come volete che Dio ci dia del pane, se facciamo di queste atrocità? Ci manderà dè fulmini, e non del pane!

- Ah cane! ah traditor della patria! - gridò, voltandosi a Renzo, con un viso da indemoniato, un di coloro che avevan potuto sentire tra il frastono quelle sante parole. - Aspetta, aspetta! È un servitore del vicario, travestito da contadino: è una spia: dàlli, dàlli! - Cento voci si spargono all'intorno. - Cos'è? dov'è? chi è? Un servitore del vicario. Una spia. Il vicario travestito da contadino, che scappa. Dov'è? dov'è? dàlli, dàlli!

Renzo ammutolisce, diventa piccino piccino, vorrebbe sparire; alcuni suoi vicini lo prendono in mezzo; e con alte e diverse grida cercano di confondere quelle voci nemiche e omicide. Ma ciò che più di tutto lo servì fu un - largo, largo, - che si sentì gridar lì vicino: - largo! è qui l'aiuto: largo, ohe! Cos'era? Era una lunga scala a mano, che alcuni portavano, per appoggiarla alla casa, e entrarci da una finestra. Ma per buona sorte, quel mezzo, che avrebbe resa la cosa facile, non era facile esso a mettere in opera. I portatori, all'una e all'altra cima, e di qua e di là della macchina, urtati, scompigliati, divisi dalla calca, andavano a onde: uno, con la testa tra due scalini, e gli staggi sulle spalle, oppresso come sotto un giogo scosso, mugghiava; un altro veniva staccato dal carico con una spinta; la scala abbandonata picchiava spalle, braccia, costole: pensate cosa dovevan dire coloro dè quali erano. Altri sollevano con le mani il peso morto, vi si caccian sotto, se lo mettono addosso, gridando: - animo! andiamo! - La macchina fatale s'avanza balzelloni, e serpeggiando. Arrivò a tempo a distrarre e a disordinare i nemici di Renzo, il quale profittò della confusione nata nella confusione; e, quatto quatto sul principio, poi giocando di gomita a più non posso, s'allontanò da quel luogo, dove non c'era buon'aria per lui, con l'intenzione anche d'uscire, più presto che potesse, dal tumulto, e d'andar davvero a trovare o a aspettare il padre Bonaventura. Tutt'a un tratto, un movimento straordinario cominciato a una estremità, si propaga per la folla, una voce si sparge, viene avanti di bocca in bocca: - Ferrer! Ferrer! - Una maraviglia, una gioia, una rabbia, un'inclinazione, una ripugnanza, scoppiano per tutto dove arriva quel nome; chi lo grida, chi vuol soffogarlo; chi afferma, chi nega, chi benedice, chi bestemmia. - È qui Ferrer! - Non è vero, non è vero! - Sì, sì; viva Ferrer! quello che ha messo il pane a buon mercato. - No, no! - E qui, è qui in carrozza. - Cosa importa? che c'entra lui? non vogliamo nessuno! - Ferrer! viva Ferrer! l'amico della povera gente! viene per condurre in prigione il vicario. - No, no: vogliamo far giustizia noi: indietro, indietro! - Sì, sì: Ferrer! venga Ferrer! in prigione il vicario!

E tutti, alzandosi in punta di piedi, si voltano a guardare da quella parte donde s'annunziava l'inaspettato arrivo. Alzandosi tutti, vedevano né più né meno che se fossero stati tutti con le piante in terra; ma tant'è, tutti s'alzavano. In fatti, all'estremità della folla, dalla parte opposta a quella dove stavano i soldati, era arrivato in carrozza Antonio Ferrer, il gran cancelliere; il quale, rimordendogli probabilmente la coscienza d'essere co' suoi spropositi e con la sua ostinazione, stato causa, o almeno occasione di quella sommossa, veniva ora a cercar d'acquietarla, e d'impedirne almeno il più terribile e irreparabile effetto: veniva a spender bene una popolarità mal acquistata. Nè tumulti popolari c'è sempre un certo numero d'uomini che, o per un riscaldamento di passione, o per una persuasione fanatica, o per un disegno scellerato, o per un maledetto gusto del soqquadro, fanno di tutto per ispinger le cose al peggio; propongono o promovono i più spietati consigli, soffian nel fuoco ogni volta che principia a illanguidire: non è mai troppo per costoro; non vorrebbero che il tumulto avesse né fine né misura. Ma per contrappeso, c'è sempre anche un certo numero d'altri uomini che, con pari ardore e con insistenza pari, s'adoprano per produr l'effetto contrario: taluni mossi da amicizia o da parzialità per le persone minacciate; altri senz'altro impulso che d'un pio e spontaneo orrore del sangue e dè fatti atroci. Il cielo li benedica. In ciascuna di queste due parti opposte, anche quando non ci siano concerti antecedenti, l'uniformità dè voleri crea un concerto istantaneo nell'operazioni. Chi forma poi la massa, e quasi il materiale del tumulto, è un miscuglio accidentale d'uomini, che, più o meno, per gradazioni indefinite, tengono dell'uno e dell'altro estremo: un po' riscaldati, un po' furbi, un po' inclinati a una certa giustizia, come l'intendon loro, un po' vogliosi di vederne qualcheduna grossa, pronti alla ferocia e alla misericordia, a detestare e ad adorare, secondo che si presenti l'occasione di provar con pienezza l'uno o l'altro sentimento; avidi ogni momento di sapere, di credere qualche cosa grossa, bisognosi di gridare, d'applaudire a qualcheduno, o d'urlargli dietro. Viva e moia, son le parole che mandan fuori più volentieri; e chi è riuscito a persuaderli che un tale non meriti d'essere squartato, non ha bisogno di spender più parole per convincerli che sia degno d'esser portato in trionfo: attori, spettatori, strumenti, ostacoli, secondo il vento; pronti anche a stare zitti, quando non sentan più grida da ripetere, a finirla, quando manchino gl'istigatori, a sbandarsi, quando molte voci concordi e non contraddette abbiano detto: andiamo; e a tornarsene a casa, domandandosi l'uno con l'altro: cos'è stato? Siccome però questa massa, avendo la maggior forza, la può dare a chi vuole, così ognuna delle due parti attive usa ogni arte per tirarla dalla sua, per impadronirsene: sono quasi due anime nemiche, che combattono per entrare in quel corpaccio, e farlo movere. Fanno a chi saprà sparger le voci più atte a eccitar le passioni, a dirigere i movimenti a favore dell'uno o dell'altro intento; a chi saprà più a proposito trovare le nuove che riaccendano gli sdegni, o gli affievoliscano, risveglino le speranze o i terrori; a chi saprà trovare il grido, che ripetuto dai più e più forte, esprima, attesti e crei nello stesso tempo il voto della pluralità, per l'una o per l'altra parte. Tutta questa chiacchierata s'è fatta per venire a dire che, nella lotta tra le due parti che si contendevano il voto della gente affollata alla casa del vicario, l'apparizione d'Antonio Ferrer diede, quasi in un momento, un gran vantaggio alla parte degli umani, la quale era manifestamente al di sotto, e, un po' più che quel soccorso fosse tardato, non avrebbe avuto più, né forza, né motivo di combattere. L'uomo era gradito alla moltitudine, per quella tariffa di sua invenzione così favorevole a' compratori, e per quel suo eroico star duro contro ogni ragionamento in contrario. Gli animi già propensi erano ora ancor più innamorati dalla fiducia animosa del vecchio che, senza guardie, senza apparato, veniva così a trovare, ad affrontare una moltitudine irritata e procellosa. Faceva poi un effetto mirabile il sentire che veniva a condurre in prigione il vicario: così il furore contro costui, che si sarebbe scatenato peggio, chi l'avesse preso con le brusche, e non gli avesse voluto conceder nulla, ora, con quella promessa di soddisfazione, con quell'osso in bocca, s'acquietava un poco, e dava luogo agli altri opposti sentimenti, che sorgevano in una gran parte degli animi. I partigiani della pace, ripreso fiato, secondavano Ferrer in cento maniere: quelli che si trovavan vicini a lui, eccitando e rieccitando col loro il pubblico applauso, e cercando insieme di far ritirare la gente, per aprire il passo alla carrozza; gli altri, applaudendo, ripetendo e facendo passare le sue parole, o quelle che a lor parevano le migliori che potesse dire, dando sulla voce ai furiosi ostinati, e rivolgendo contro di loro la nuova passione della mobile adunanza. - Chi è che non vuole che si dica: viva Ferrer? Tu non vorresti eh, che il pane fosse a buon mercato? Son birboni che non vogliono una giustizia da cristiani: e c'è di quelli che schiamazzano più degli altri, per fare scappare il vicario. In prigione il vicario! Viva Ferrer! Largo a Ferrer! - E crescendo sempre più quelli che parlavan così, s'andava a proporzione abbassando la baldanza della parte contraria; di maniera che i primi dal predicare vennero anche a dar sulle mani a quelli che diroccavano ancora, a cacciarli indietro, a levar loro dall'unghie gli ordigni. Questi fremevano, minacciavano anche, cercavan di rifarsi; ma la causa del sangue era perduta: il grido che predominava era: prigione, giustizia, Ferrer! Dopo un po' di dibattimento, coloro furon respinti: gli altri s'impadroniron della porta, e per tenerla difesa da nuovi assalti, e per prepararvi l'adito a Ferrer; e alcuno di essi, mandando dentro una voce a quelli di casa (fessure non ne mancava), gli avvisò che arrivava soccorso, e che facessero star pronto il vicario, - per andar subito... in prigione: ehm, avete inteso? - È quel Ferrer che aiuta a far le gride? - domandò a un nuovo vicino il nostro Renzo, che si rammentò del vidit Ferrer che il dottore gli aveva gridato all'orecchio, facendoglielo vedere in fondo di quella tale. - Già: il gran cancelliere - gli fu risposto.

- È un galantuomo, n'è vero? - Eccome se è un galantuomo! è quello che aveva messo il pane a buon mercato; e gli altri non hanno voluto; e ora viene a condurre in prigione il vicario, che non ha fatto le cose giuste.

Non fa bisogno di dire che Renzo fu subito per Ferrer. Volle andargli incontro addirittura: la cosa non era facile; ma con certe sue spinte e gomitate da alpigiano, riuscì a farsi far largo, e a arrivare in prima fila, proprio di fianco alla carrozza.

Era questa già un po' inoltrata nella folla; e in quel momento stava ferma, per uno di quegl'incagli inevitabili e frequenti, in un'andata di quella sorte. Il vecchio Ferrer presentava ora all'uno, ora all'altro sportello, un viso tutto umile, tutto ridente, tutto amoroso, un viso che aveva tenuto sempre in serbo per quando si trovasse alla presenza di don Filippo IV; ma fu costretto a spenderlo anche in quest'occasione. Parlava anche; ma il chiasso e il ronzio di tante voci, gli evviva stessi che si facevano a lui, lasciavano ben poco e a ben pochi sentir le sue parole. §; ora stendendole e movendole lentamente fuori d'uno sportello, per chiedere un po' di luogo; ora abbassandole garbatamente, per chiedere un po' di silenzio.§ Quando n'aveva ottenuto un poco, i più vicini sentivano e ripetevano le sue parole: - pane, abbondanza: vengo a far giustizia: un po' di luogo di grazia -. Sopraffatto poi e come soffogato dal fracasso di tante voci, dalla vista di tanti visi fitti, di tant'occhi addosso a lui, si tirava indietro un momento, gonfiava le gote, mandava un gran soffio, e diceva tra sé: " por mi vida' que de gente! " - Viva Ferrer! Non abbia paura. Lei è un galantuomo. Pane, pane!

- Sì; pane, pane, - rispondeva Ferrer: - abbondanza; lo prometto io, - e metteva la mano al petto.

- Un po' di luogo, - aggiungeva subito: - vengo per condurlo in prigione, per dargli il giusto gastigo che si merita: - e soggiungeva sottovoce: - si es culpable -. Chinandosi poi innanzi verso il cocchiere, gli diceva in fretta: - adelantè Pedro' si puedes . Il cocchiere sorrideva anche lui alla moltitudine, con una grazia affettuosa, come se fosse stato un gran personaggio; e con un garbo ineffabile, dimenava adagio adagio la frusta, a destra e a sinistra, per chiedere agl'incomodi vicini che si ristringessero e si ritirassero un poco. - Di grazia, - diceva anche lui, - signori miei, un po' di luogo, un pochino; appena appena da poter passare. Intanto i benevoli più attivi s'adopravano a far fare il luogo chiesto così gentilmente. Alcuni davanti ai cavalli facevano ritirar le persone, con buone parole, con un mettere le mani sui petti, con certe spinte soavi: - in là, via, un po' di luogo, signori -; alcuni facevan lo stesso dalle due parti della carrozza, perché potesse passare senza arrotar piedi, né ammaccar mostacci; che, oltre il male delle persone, sarebbe stato porre a un gran repentaglio l'auge d'Antonio Ferrer. Renzo, dopo essere stato qualche momento a vagheggiare quella decorosa vecchiezza, conturbata un po' dall'angustia, aggravata dalla fatica, ma animata dalla sollecitudine, abbellita, per dir così, dalla speranza di togliere un uomo all'angosce mortali, Renzo, dico, mise da parte ogni pensiero d'andarsene; e si risolvette d'aiutare Ferrer, e di non abbandonarlo, fin che non fosse ottenuto l'intento. Detto fatto, si mise con gli altri a far far largo; e non era certo dè meno attivi. Il largo si fece; - venite pure avanti, - diceva più d'uno al cocchiere, ritirandosi o andando a fargli un po' di strada più innanzi. - Adelante, presto, con juicio , - gli disse anche il padrone; e la carrozza si mosse. Ferrer, in mezzo ai saluti che scialacquava al pubblico in massa, ne faceva certi particolari di ringraziamento, con un sorriso d'intelligenza, a quelli che vedeva adoprarsi per lui: e di questi sorrisi ne toccò più d'uno a Renzo, il quale per verità se li meritava, e serviva in quel giorno il gran cancelliere meglio che non avrebbe potuto fare il più bravo dè suoi segretari. Al giovane montanaro invaghito di quella buona grazia, pareva quasi d'aver fatto amicizia con Antonio Ferrer. La carrozza, una volta incamminata, seguitò poi, più o meno adagio, e non senza qualche altra fermatina. Il tragitto non era forse più che un tiro di schioppo; ma riguardo al tempo impiegatovi, avrebbe potuto parere un viaggetto, anche a chi non avesse avuto la santa fretta di Ferrer. La gente si moveva, davanti e di dietro, a destra e a sinistra della carrozza, a guisa di cavalloni intorno a una nave che avanza nel forte della tempesta. Più acuto, più scordato, più assordante di quello della tempesta era il frastono. Ferrer, guardando ora da una parte, ora dall'altra; atteggiandosi e gestendo insieme, cercava d'intender qualche cosa, per accomodar le risposte al bisogno; voleva far alla meglio un po' di dialogo con quella brigata d'amici; ma la cosa era difficile, la più difficile forse che gli fosse ancora capitata, in tant'anni di gran-cancellierato. Ogni tanto però, qualche parola, anche qualche frase, ripetuta da un crocchio nel suo passaggio, gli si faceva sentire, come lo scoppio d'un razzo più forte si fa sentire nell'immenso scoppiettìo d'un fuoco artifiziale. E lui, ora ingegnandosi di rispondere in modo soddisfacente a queste grida, ora dicendo a buon conto le parole che sapeva dover esser più accette, o che qualche necessità istantanea pareva richiedere, parlò anche lui per tutta la strada. - Sì, signori; pane, abbondanza. Lo condurrò io in prigione: sarà gastigato... si es culpable . Sì, sì, comanderò io: il pane a buon mercato. Asi es ... così è, voglio dire: il re nostro signore non vuole che codesti fedelissimi vassalli patiscan la fame. Ox! ox! guardaos : non si facciano male, signori. Pedro' adelante con juicio . Abbondanza, abbondanza. Un po' di luogo, per carità. Pane, pane. In prigione, in prigione. Cosa? - domandava poi a uno che s'era buttato mezzo dentro lo sportello, a urlargli qualche suo consiglio o preghiera o applauso che fosse. Ma costui, senza poter neppure ricevere il "cosa?" era stato tirato indietro da uno che lo vedeva lì lì per essere schiacciato da una rota. Con queste botte e risposte, tra le incessanti acclamazioni, tra qualche fremito anche d'opposizione, che si faceva sentire qua e là, ma era subito soffogato, ecco alla fine Ferrer arrivato alla casa, per opera principalmente di què buoni ausiliari. Gli altri che, come abbiam detto, eran già lì con le medesime buone intenzioni, avevano intanto lavorato a fare e a rifare un po' di piazza. Prega, esorta, minaccia; pigia, ripigia, incalza di qua e di là, con quel raddoppiare di voglia, e con quel rinnovamento di forze che viene dal veder vicino il fine desiderato; gli era finalmente riuscito di divider la calca in due, e poi di spingere indietro le due calche; tanto che, tra la porta e la carrozza, che vi si fermò davanti, v'era un piccolo spazio voto. Renzo, che, facendo un po' da battistrada, un po' da scorta, era arrivato con la carrozza, poté collocarsi in una di quelle due frontiere di benevoli, che facevano, nello stesso tempo, ala alla carrozza e argine alle due onde prementi di popolo. E aiutando a rattenerne una con le poderose sue spalle, si trovò anche in un bel posto per poter vedere.

Ferrer mise un gran respiro, quando vide quella piazzetta libera, e la porta ancor chiusa. Chiusa qui vuol dire non aperta; del resto i gangheri eran quasi sconficcati fuor dè pilastri: i battenti scheggiati, ammaccati, sforzati e scombaciati nel mezzo lasciavano veder fuori da un largo spiraglio un pezzo di catenaccio storto, allentato, e quasi divelto, che, se vogliam dir così, li teneva insieme. Un galantuomo s'era affacciato a quel fesso, a gridar che aprissero; un altro spalancò in fretta lo sportello della carrozza: il vecchio mise fuori la testa, s'alzò, e afferrando con la destra il braccio di quel galantuomo, uscì, e scese sul predellino. La folla, da una parte e dall'altra, stava tutta in punta di piedi per vedere: mille visi, mille barbe in aria: la curiosità e l'attenzione generale creò un momento di generale silenzio. Ferrer, fermatosi quel momento sul predellino, diede un'occhiata in giro, salutò con un inchino la moltitudine, come da un pulpito, e messa la mano sinistra al petto, gridò: - pane e giustizia -; e franco, diritto, togato, scese in terra, tra l'acclamazioni che andavano alle stelle. Intanto quelli di dentro avevano aperto, ossia avevan finito d'aprire, tirando via il catenaccio insieme con gli anelli già mezzi sconficcati, e allargando lo spiraglio, appena quanto bastava per fare entrare il desideratissimo ospite. - Presto, presto, - diceva lui: - aprite bene, ch'io possa entrare: e voi, da bravi, tenete indietro la gente; non mi lasciate venire addosso... per l'amor del cielo! Serbate un po' di largo per tra poco. Ehi! ehi! signori, un momento, - diceva poi ancora a quelli di dentro: - adagio con quel battente, lasciatemi passare: eh! le mie costole; vi raccomando le mie costole.
