Ti è mai venuto in mente di chiederti quali sono i libri italiani più famosi e tradotti nel mondo?

A me è capitato di pensarci tante volte. Un po' per curiosità personale, un po' perché nella mia vita professionale mi occupo di lingua italiana e di libri. E alla fine ho trovato una lista che mi sembra abbastanza attendibile. Fatta di classici eterni e di casi letterari estemporanei.

Al primo posto? Beh, naturalmente, la Divina Commedia. Un'opera che non appartiene solo alla letteratura italiana, ma alla cultura mondiale.

Al secondo posto c'è un altro classico, anche se più moderno. In un certo senso, anche questo è un libro universale. Appartiene a tutti i bambini e a tutte le bambine del mondo. È Pinocchio, di Carlo Collodi! La storia del burattino più famoso del pianeta.

E dopo? Chi c'è? Un autore che fa parte a tutti gli effetti della letteratura. Si tratta di Umberto Eco, che ha conquistato il mondo con il suo thriller medievale ambientato in un monastero benedettino. Sto parlando ovviamente de Il nome della rosa.

Infine, c'è il libro più recente di tutti. O meglio, la serie di libri. Una tetralogia che ha conquistato il mondo. La storia di due ragazze napoletane degli anni ‘Cinquanta che crescono insieme in un'Italia che cambia con loro e attorno a loro. Se non conosci i libri, quasi sicuramente conosci la serie tv che ne è stata tratta. È L'amica geniale, di Elena Ferrante. Un'autrice che nessuno sa davvero chi sia o che faccia abbia. Voci di corridoio del mondo dell'editoria dicono che sia lo pseudonimo di un altro famoso scrittore napoletano, qualcuno dice che invece sia sua moglie, ma in realtà tutto questo non importa.

Elena Ferrante, che esista davvero o no, è la scrittrice italiana più famosa nel mondo oggi.

E dietro di lei?

Oggi vi parlo di cinque di loro. Cinque scrittrici che ci hanno lasciato libri belli e importanti, e che hanno vissuto vite che ci raccontano l'Italia in profondità. Una cosa che su Salvatore racconta è molto apprezzata.

Spero che troverete nomi e titoli che vi incuriosiranno. Non saranno letture facili, all'inizio, perché la lingua che usano a volte è un po' datata. Ma la potenza letteraria e le emozioni che sanno esprimere sono senza tempo.

Scrittrice numero 1 – Natalia Ginzburg

Ginzburg. Che cognome curioso, non è vero? Non sembra italiano. E in effetti non lo è. Quella che oggi conosciamo come Natalia Ginzburg prima del matrimonio era nota come Natalia Levi, nata a Palermo nel 1916 e poi cresciuta a Torino.

Il padre di Natalia, Giovanni Levi, era un ebreo triestino. Non praticante, forse persino ateo, ma pur sempre ebreo. Una cosa che nell'Italia del fascismo non era un ottimo biglietto da visita. Tanto più che Giuseppe Levi, oltre che ebreo, era pure un convinto oppositore del regime.

La giovane Natalia insomma nasce in una famiglia con le idee chiare e, crescendo, le fa sue. Da adulta, le conferma anche. Sposando un intellettuale di origine russa che vive e lavora a Torino. Si chiama Lev, ma tutti lo chiamano Leone. Leone Ginzburg. Anche lui è di famiglia ebraica e questo, con il tempo che passa, è un'altra promessa di guai.

Natalia e Leone vivono per un paio d'anni a Torino dove lui collabora con la casa editrice Einaudi e lei muove i primi passi della sua carriera letteraria. Nel 1940, il regime mussoliniano decide che un ebreo antifascista non può lavorare in una casa editrice e lo manda al confino. Cioè, lo costringe a vivere in un paese piccolissimo in Abruzzo, lontano dal suo ambiente, isolato da tutti. Era una cosa che il fascismo faceva per punire gli oppositori e renderli inoffensivi. Natalia, in quegli anni duri e di paura, pubblica il suo primo romanzo, naturalmente sotto pseudonimo, e poi è costretta a fermarsi per un po'. Nel 1944, nel pieno della guerra, i fascisti arrestano, torturano e uccidono suo marito Leone. Lei si trova improvvisamente sola, madre di quattro figli, in un'Italia devastata dalla guerra civile, e armata solo della sua penna.

Per fortuna, dopo la guerra, il mondo intellettuale si ricorda di lei e le garantisce le condizioni per vivere di scrittura. E lei lo fa, scrivendo uno dopo l'altro una serie di romanzi e racconti che oggi sono parte della storia della letteratura italiana. Ginzburg non è una scrittrice leggera, nei suoi romanzi ci sono la storia, la vita, la politica. E anche lei decide di fare politica. Prima come attivista e militante, poi anche come deputata. Nel 1986 si candida alle elezioni e entra in parlamento nelle liste del Partito Comunista Italiano.

Il suo libro più famoso ancora oggi è Lessico famigliare, un libro di memorie con cui ha vinto il più prestigioso riconoscimento letterario italiano, il Premio Strega. È un libro in cui attraversa tutta la sua stessa vita, e in particolare gli anni del fascismo e della guerra. Una prospettiva unica, scritta con grande talento letterario, che ci permette di attraversare le pagine più buie del XX secolo.

Scrittrice numero 2 – Elsa Morante

Quattro anni più vecchia di Natalia Ginzburg è Elsa Morante, destinata a diventare una delle figure più importanti della vita culturale italiana della seconda metà del XX secolo.

Romana, originaria del quartiere popolare di Testaccio, Morante comincia a scrivere da ragazzina, anche se il vero esordio letterario arriva quando è adulta e quando entra nei circoli letterari della capitale. Lì dove incontra uno degli scrittori più importanti della letteratura italiana, e che per diversi anni sarà anche suo marito, Alberto Moravia.

Moravia e Morante lasciano Roma nel 1943, per paura di essere arrestati dai nazisti, e si rifugiano in un paesino del sud del Lazio, una regione chiamata Ciociaria. Da quell'esperienza, Moravia trae l'ispirazione per il suo famoso romanzo La ciociara, diventato anche un leggendario film con Sophia Loren. Anche Elsa userà quell'esperienza e quelle ambientazioni per il suo libro più importante.

Si chiama La storia ed è la vicenda struggente di una donna romana del popolo che, durante la guerra, viene stuprata da un soldato tedesco e da quell'esperienza ha un figlio. Il piccolo Useppe. Che da un lato le ricorda l'orrore della violenza subita, ma dall'altro è l'unico simbolo di vita che le rimane mentre la guerra distrugge attorno a lei. Un libro che nella letteratura italiana non ha eguali.

Scrittrice numero 3 – Dacia Maraini

Dacia Maraini è di vent'anni più giovane di Morante e Ginzburg, ma questo non vuol dire che il grande evento del XX secolo non l'abbia toccata. È figlia di una donna siciliana di origini nobili e proprietaria di terre sull'isola. Il padre invece è fiorentino, fa l'antropologo ed è un appassionato orientalista. Per questo motivo, quando Dacia è una bambina, passa l'infanzia in Giappone, all'epoca Paese alleato dell'Italia fascista. Le cose vanno bene fino al 1943. Dacia ha appena sette anni, e in quell'anno il governo italiano esce dalla guerra e dall'alleanza con tedeschi e giapponesi. Il che significa che gli italiani in Giappone sono nemici e traditori. La famiglia Maraini finisce in un campo di concentramento dove ne vedrà di cotte e di crude. Due anni in cui patisce la fame, prima di potere tornare in Italia. Prima di stabilirsi definitivamente a Firenze e poi a Roma, dove diventerà anche lei compagna di Alberto Moravia, Maraini passa qualche anno in Sicilia dalla famiglia della madre.

Dall'esperienza siciliana verrà fuori il suo romanzo più famoso, Bagheria. Che prende il titolo da una città vicino a Palermo famosa per le sue ville. Il libro parla di Sicilia senza filtri. Racconta la semplicità e la povertà del popolo, ma anche il paternalismo a volte violento di certi uomini vicini alla famiglia e soprattutto del modo in cui le famiglie ricche siciliane – come quella di sua madre – avevano in qualche modo permesso e anzi incoraggiato la formazione della mafia.

Scrittrice 4 – Goliarda Sapienza

Da una quasi siciliana, a una siciliana in carne e ossa. Goliarda Sapienza è una scrittrice meno conosciuta delle tre che l'hanno preceduta, ma ultimamente si parla molto di lei e dei suoi libri. È in atto una vera e propria riscoperta della sua opera. Nata a Catania da genitori di simpatie socialiste e di idee molto progressiste anche in campo sociale. Nella Sicilia del 1924, delle vere e proprie mosche bianche.

Da ragazza, Goliarda non pensa alla carriera letteraria, ma sogna di fare l'attrice. Anche se poi scopre abbastanza presto che ha più talento con la penna che sul palcoscenico o davanti alla videocamera. Ha una vita travagliata, conosce la povertà e anche la prigione. Viene arrestata per un furto e passa vari mesi nel carcere romano di Rebibbia. In poche parole, conosce la vita nel modo più profondo, ed è quello che poi trasmette in letteratura.

Il suo romanzo più famoso è uscito postumo, cioè quando lei era già morta. Scritto nel 1976, è arrivato ai lettori solo nel 1998. Si chiama L'arte della gioia e basta leggerne poche pagine per capire perché nel 1976 non sarebbe stato mai possibile pubblicarlo in Italia. È un romanzo la cui protagonista, un alter-ego dell'autrice, vive una vita dissoluta e senza valori. Passionale, impulsiva, a volte persino violenta e senza scrupoli. E inoltre, una donna che vive la sua sessualità in modo aperto e scandaloso, e non solo per gli standard degli anni '70 italiani. È probabilmente il primo grande romanzo italiano in cui si parla apertamente di omosessualità femminile.

Scrittrice 5 – Fernanda Pivano

Con quest'ultimo nome forse ho un po' barato. Ma spero perché mi perdonerete. In che senso? Perché Fernanda Pivano, che pure ha scritto alcuni libri farina del suo sacco, è più famosa e importante come traduttrice che come scrittrice. Detta senza mezzi termini, senza di lei in Italia non avremmo conosciuto molta della grande letteratura americana. Genovese e di buona famiglia, comincia a leggere romanzi americani che il suo professore del liceo (Cesare Pavese, un altro grandissimo scrittore italiano) le porta di straforo, cioè di nascosto. Perché, ancora una volta, sono gli anni del fascismo, gli americani sono i nemici e quindi tutto quello che è americano è illegale. Fernanda già da ragazza si appassiona alla lingua inglese, alla letteratura americana e inizia a tradurre. Prima per gioco, senza poter nemmeno pensare di pubblicare. Poi per professione. Porta la sua firma la prima traduzione in italiano di Addio alle armi di Ernest Hemingway. E poi sempre lei porta in Italia Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner ma soprattutto i poeti e gli scrittori della beat generation.

Pivano diventa presto la pioniera non solo della letteratura americana classica, ma anche dei contemporanei e in particolare della cultura psichedelica. Negli anni '70 italiani, il periodo della controcultura, della rivoluzione giovanile e della lotta per i diritti civili, Fernanda Pivano è sempre presente come simbolo culturale riconosciuto. Nel 1971, il cantautore Fabrizio De André, che forse conosci se ascolti Salvatore racconta dagli inizi, ha pubblicato uno dei suoi dischi più belli. Non al denaro, né all'amore né al cielo. Liberamente ispirato all'Antologia di Spoon River di Egdar Lee Masters. Chi l'aveva tradotta in italiano? Proprio lei, Fernanda Pivano.

Forse i suoi libri non sono così conosciuti, ma l'impronta della sua penna di traduttrice nella cultura italiana del XX secolo è molto profonda. Indelebile.
