第 二 章 彼 は 誰 に 会い たかった か ？【2】

平たい ドラム缶 に 溜めた 水 で 、熱心に 指 の 汚れ を 洗い 落としている 祐一 の 背中 を 、矢島 憲夫 は たばこ を 吸い ながら 眺めていた 。

ドラム缶 は コンクリ を こねる とき に 使わ れ る もの で 、いくら 真水 が 入って いる と は いえ 、洗った 手 が 乾けば 蛇 の ような 模様 が 皮膚 に 浮かぶ 。

すでに 夕方 の 六 時 を 回り 、作業場 の あちこち で 各 組 の 人夫 たち が 帰り 支度 を 始めて いた 。

さっき まで 外壁 を 壊して いた 数台 の 重機 も 、今では 一カ所 に おとなしく 並んで いる 。

元 産婦人科 の 病棟 だった ビル も 、作業 を 始めて すでに 四 日 目 、その 三 分 の 二 が 無惨に 取り壊されている 。 こういう 大きな 現場 の 場合 、憲夫 の 会社 は 下請け に 回る 。 いちおう 自社 でも 15 ｍ ロング の 重機 を 一台 所有している のだが 、鉄筋 の 三階建て ともなると 一台 で は どうにもならず 、大手 の 解体業者 の 下請け に 回る しか ない 。

ドラム缶 の 水 で 洗った 手 を 、首 に かけた タオル で 拭き 始めた 祐一 に 、「お前 も 、そろそろ 重機 の 免許 取ったら どう や ？ 」と 憲夫 は 声 を かけ 、吸って いた たばこ を 灰皿 に 押しつけた 。

憲夫 の 言葉 に 振り返った 祐一 が 、

「は ぁ 」

と なんとも やる 気 の ない 返事 を し 、今度 は 顔 を ゴシゴシ と タオル で こする 。

こすれば こする ほど 、顔 の 汚れ が 目立つ 。

「来月 、一 週間 くらい 休んで よ かけん 、免許 取り に 行かん か ？ 憲夫 の 言葉 に 、行きたい と いう 意味 な の か 、行きたくない と いう 意味 な の か 、祐一 が 口 を 尖がらせ ながら も 小さく 頷く 。 正直な ところ 、祐一 の ほう から この 話 を 言い出して くれ ない もの か と 、憲夫 は ずっと 待って いる のだ が 、いくら 待っても 祐一 が 積極的に なる こと は なかった 。

ゴム 手袋 など を 自分 の バッグ に しまい始めた 祐一 に 、「ところで 気分 は もう よか とか ？ と 憲夫 は 声 を かけた 。 今朝 、車 の 中 で とつぜん 顔色 を 変えて 吐き そうに なった わりに 、現場 に 着く と いつも と 変わらず おとなしく 働いて いた 。 ただ 、いつも 持参 して くる 弁当 に 、ほとんど 手 を つけ なかった こと を 憲夫 は 知っている 。

「今日 帰ったら すぐ 、じいさん 、病院 に 連れて 行く と やろ ？ 」と 憲夫 は 訊いた 。

「たぶん メシ 食う て から 」

埃っぽい 寒風 の 中 、バッグ を 抱えて 立ち上がった 祐一 が 、ぼそっと 答える 。 憲夫 は 、いつも の ように 倉見 、吉岡 、そして 祐一 を ワゴン車 に 乗せた 。

夕日 に 赤く 染まった 長崎 湾 を 眺め ながら 国道 を 走っている と 、また いつも の 如く 倉見 が 焼酎 の ワンカップ を 飲み始める 。

「家 に 着く まで 、たかが 三十 分 くらい 我慢 できん と や ？ 憲夫 は 鼻先 へ 流れて きた 焼酎 の 臭い に 顔 を しかめた 。

「仕事 が 終わる 一 時間 も 前 から 我慢 し とる と に 、それ から また 三十 分 も 我慢 できる もん ね 」

倉 見 が 呆れた と ばかりに 笑って 、カップ から こぼれ そうな 焼酎 に 口 を つけ 、濃い 無精髭 が とろっとした 液体 に 濡れる 。 窓 を 開けて いる に も かかわらず 、焼酎 と 乾いた 土 の におい が 車内 で 混じる 。

「そう 言えば 、きのう 、福岡 の 三瀬 峠 で 女の子 が 殺さ れたら しか な 」

窓 の 外 を 眺めて いた 吉岡 が 、ふと 思い出した ように 言った 。

「保険 の 勧誘 し とる 女の子 らし か けど 、あげん こと さ れたら 親 は たまった もん じゃ なか ねえ 」

同じ 年頃 の 娘 を 持つ 倉見 が そう 言って 、焼酎 で 濡れた 指 を 舐める 。

内縁 の 妻 と 二人 で 暮らして いる 吉岡 に は 、被害者 の 親 の 気持ち は 実感 でき ない ようで 、「三瀬 って 言えば 、俺 が 、前 に トラック 運転 し よる とき 、よう 使い よった 道 や もん ね 」と 話 を 変える 。 吉岡 本人 が 詳しく 話す こと は ない が 、県営 住宅 で 一緒に 暮らして いる 女 は 、もう 十 年 に なる と いう のに 、まだ 前 の 旦那 と の 籍 を 抜いて いない らしい 。 「祐一 、お前 も 三瀬 の 峠 とか 、よう ドライブ する と やろ が ？ 吉岡 に 声 を かけ られて 、一番 後ろ に 座っている 祐一 が 窓 の 外 から 車内 に 視線 を 戻した 。

その 様子 が ルームミラー に 映る 。

市内 へ 向かう 反対 車線 が 渋滞 し 始めて いた 。

造船所 で 一日 働いた 男たち の 車 が 、数珠繋ぎ に 街道 を 伸びている 。 夕日 を 浴びた 男 たち の 顔 は 、どこ か 般若 の 面 の ように 見える 。

「なぁ 、三瀬 峠 とか 、よう ドライブ する と やろ が ？ 返事 を し ない 祐一 に 、改めて 吉岡 が 訊いた 。

「三瀬 は ……あんまり 好か ん 。

あそこ 、夜 走る と 気色 悪 か 」

ぼそっと 答えた 祐一 の 言葉 が 、なぜ か ハンドル を 握る 憲夫 の 耳 に 残った 。

倉 見 と 吉岡 を 順番 に 降ろす と 、憲夫 は 祐一 の 実家 へ と 車 を 走らせた 。

国道 から 狭い 路地 に 入り 、軒先 の 表札 が サイドミラー に 触れて しまう ような 道 が 、くねくね と 漁港 の ほう へ 伸びる 。

埋め立て で ほとんど の 海岸線 を 奪われた あと 、辛うじて 残った 小さな 漁港 に は 、小型の 漁船 が 数 艘 停泊している 。 波 止め で 囲まれた 湾 内 は おだやかで 、漁船 を 繋ぐ ロープ の 軋む 音 だけ が 、ときどき 思い出した ように 辺り に 響く 。

漁港 の 周囲 に は いくつか シャッター を 下ろした 倉庫 が ある 。

一見 、漁業 関係 の 倉庫 に 見える が 、中 に は ペーロン と 呼ばれる 競技用 ボート が 収納 されている 。 この 地域 は ペーロン が 盛んで 、毎年 夏 に なる と 各 地区 対抗 の 大会 が 開かれ る 。

十 数 人 の 男 たち が 一斉に 櫂 を 漕ぐ 姿 は 勇壮で 、毎年 数多く の 見物客 も 集まってくる 。

「来年 も 、ペーロン 出る と やろ ？ たまたま 半分 ほど シャッター の 開いて いる 倉庫 を 目 に して 、憲夫 は 祐一 に 声 を かけた 。

荷物 を 膝 に 抱え 、祐一 は すでに 車 を 降りる 準備 を して いた 。

「練習 は いつごろ から 始まる とか ？ ルームミラー 越し に 尋ねる と 、「 いつも と 一緒 やろ 」 と 、 祐一 が 答える 。

高校 生 だった 祐一 が 初めて ペーロン に 参加 した とき 、地区 の リーダー を 務めた の が 憲夫 だった 。

練習 中 、ぶつくさ と 文句 ばかり 言う 他 の 少年 たち と 違い 、黙々と 櫂 を 漕ぐ のは いい のだが 、祐一 は 加減 という もの を 知らず 、手のひら の 皮 が 剥ける まで 練習してしまい 、結局 、大会 当日 に は 使い物 に ならなかった 。

あれ から 十 年 近く 経つ が 、祐一 は 毎年 ペーロン 大会 に 参加 している 。

「好きな の か ？ 」と 問えば 、「別に 」と 答える くせに 、毎年 練習 が 始まる と 、誰よりも 先に 倉庫 に 現れる らしい 。

「ちょっと 寄って 行こう か な 」

祐一 の 家 の 前 で 車 を 停める と 、憲夫 は そう 言って エンジン を 切った 。

すでに 降りよう と して いた 祐一 が 、ちらっと 憲夫 へ 目 を 向ける 。

「今日 は 何時ごろ 、じいさん 、病院 に 連れて 行く と か ？ 」と 憲夫 は また 訊いた 。

「晩 メシ 食う て から 」

祐一 が また ぼそっと 呟いて 車 を 降りる 。

祐一 の あと を 追って 玄関 に 入る と 、病人 が いる 家 特有 の におい が した 。

祐一 が 一緒に 暮らして いる とはいえ 、元 は 老夫婦 の 家 なので 、一歩 足を 踏み入れた だけ で 、視界 から 色 が 抜け落ちて しまった ような 感覚 に 襲われる 。 祐一 が 脱ぎ捨てた 赤い スニーカー だけ が 、汚れて は いても 、唯一 、そこ に 明るい 色 を 残す 。

「 おばさん ！ さっさと 廊下 を 歩いて いく 祐一 に 呆れ ながら 、憲夫 は 奥 へ 声 を かけた 。

靴 を 脱いで いる と 、「あら 、憲夫 が 来た と ね ？

珍 しか 」と 祐一 に 尋ねる 房枝 の 声 が 聞こえた 。

「じいさん 、これ から 病院 に 行く って ？ 靴 を 脱いで 廊下 に 上がる と 、台所 に いた らしい 房枝 が 出てきて 、「この前 、退院 した か と思う たら 、また 入院 よ 」と 言いながら 濡れた 手 を 首 に かけた 手ぬぐい で 拭く 。

「うん 、祐一 が そう 言う けんさ ……」

憲夫 は 気兼ね なく 廊下 を 進み 、勝治 の 寝ている 部屋 の 障子 を 開けた 。

「じいさん 、また 入院 する って ？ 病院 より 家 の ほう が よか やろ が ？ 障子 を 開けた 途端 に 、かすかに し もの に おい が した 。

畳 に 差し込んで いる 街灯 が 、古い 畳 の 上 で 点滅 する 蛍光灯 と 混じって いる 。

「病院 に 行けば 、家 に 帰りたいって 言う し 、家 に 連れて くれば 、病院 の ほうが よかって 言う し 、ほんと 、もう どうにも ならん よ 、この 人 は 」房枝 が そう 言い ながら 蛍光灯 を つけ直す 。 布団 の 中 で 、勝治 の 濁った 咳 が こもる 。

憲夫 は 枕元 に 腰 を 下ろす と 、乱暴に 布団 を 捲った 。

固 そうな 枕 に 染み だらけ の 勝治 の 顔 が のっている 。

「 じいさん 」

憲夫 は 声 を かけ ながら 、勝治 の 額 に 手のひら を のせた 。

自分 の 手 が 熱かった の か 、一瞬 、ぞっと する ほど 冷たかった 。

「 祐一 は ？ 痰 を からま せる ように 勝治 が 尋ね 、額 に のせ られた 憲夫 の 手 を 払う 。

ちょうど その とき 、祐一 が 階段 を 上がって いく 足音 が 聞こえ 、家 全体 が 揺れた 。

「なんでもかんでも 祐一 に 頼っとったら 駄目 ばい 」憲夫 は 寝て いる 勝治 だけ で はなく 、背後 に 立つ 房枝 に も 伝わる ように 言った 。 「なん も 頼って ばっかり おる もん ね 」

蛍光 灯 の 下 で 房枝 が 口 を 尖らせる 。

「 いや 、 そりゃ そう やろう けど 、 祐一 も まだ 若っか 男 よ 。 じいさん 、ばあさん の 世話 ばっかり さ せ とっても 、それ こそ 嫁 も もらえ んたい 」憲夫 は わざと ふざけた 口調 で 言い返した 。 おかげ で 房枝 の 険しい 表情 が 少し だけ 弛む 。

「そい で も さ 、正直 、祐一 が おら ん やったら 、それ こそ 、じいさん ば 、風呂 に 入れる こと も できん と よ 」

「それ こそ 、ホーム ヘルパー でも 頼めば よかろう に 」

「あんた も 簡単に 言う ねぇ 、ヘルパー さん に 来て もらう と に 、いくら お金 が かかる か 知らん と やろ ？ 「高い と ね ？ 「そりゃ 、あんた 、そこ の 岡崎 の ばあさん なんて ……」

房枝 が そこ まで 言った とき 、布団 の 中 で 、「うるさい ！ 」と 勝治 が 怒鳴り 、苦し そうに 咳き込んだ 。

「ごめん 、ごめん 」

憲夫 は 布団 を 軽く 叩いて 立ち上がり 、房枝 の 背中 を 押して 部屋 を 出た 。

台所 の まな板 に 活き の 良さそうな ブリ が のっていた 。

どす黒い 血 が 濡れた まな板 に 広がって いる 。 天井 に 向け られた 眼 と 半開き の 口 が 、何か を 訴え かけている ように 見える 。

「そうい や 、祐一 は 昨日 、遅かった と やろ ？ 包丁 を 握った 房枝 の 背中 に 、憲夫 は 何気なく 声 を かけた 。

今朝 、現場 へ 向かう 途中 に 顔色 を 変えて 車 を 飛び降り 、苦しそうに えずいた こと を 思い出した のだ 。

「さぁ 、知らん 。 出かけ とった と やろ か ？ 「珍しゅう 、二日酔い やった ばい 」

「 二日酔い ？ 祐一 が ね ？ 「今朝 、顔 真っ青 させて ……」

「へ ぇ 、どこ で 飲んだ と やろ か 、車 で 出かけた と やろう に 」

年季 の 入った 包丁 で 、房枝 が ブリ の 身 を 切り分けて いく 。

グツッ 、 グツッ と 包丁 が 骨 を 砕く 。

「あんた 、ブリ 一 匹 、実千代 さん に 持って 帰らん ね 。

今朝 、漁協 の 森下 さん に もろうた と やけど 、うち じゃ 、祐一 くらい しか おらん けん 」

房枝 が 包丁 を 握った まま 振り返り 、テーブル の 下 を 指す 。

濡れた 包丁 から 水 が 一 滴 、黒 光り した 床 に 落ちる 。

テーブル の 下 を 覗き込む と 、発泡 スチロール の ケース に ブリ が 一匹 入って いた 。

房枝 に もらった ブリ を ケース ごと 玄関 へ 運んで 、憲夫 は 横 の 階段 を 二階 へ 上がった 。

上がる と すぐに 祐一 の 部屋 の ドア が ある 。

ノック する の も 気恥ずかしく 、憲夫 は 、「おい 」と 声 を かけ ながら 勝手に ドア を 開けた 。

風呂 に でも 向かう つもりだった の か 、パンツ 一 枚 で 立っていた 祐一 が 、開けた ドア に ぶつかりそうに なる 。

「今 から 風呂 か ？ 筋肉 に 薄い 皮膚 が 貼り ついた ような 祐一 の 上半身 を 眺め ながら 憲夫 は 言った 。

「……風呂 入って 、メシ 食うて 、病院 」

祐一 が 頷いて 部屋 を 出て 行こう と する 。

憲夫 は からだ を 躱して 祐一 を 通した 。

一緒に 下りる つもりだった が 、部屋 の 床 に 「クレーン 免許 」と 書かれた パンフレット が 落ちている の が 目 に ついた 。

「ほう 、一応 、取る つもり は ある とたい 」返事 は なく 、すでに 階段 を 下りて いく 足音 が 高く なる 。 憲夫 は なんとなく 部屋 に 入って 床 から パンフレット を 拾い上げた 。

階段 を 下りた 祐一 の 足音 が 今度 は 廊下 を 遠ざかって いく 。

潰れた 座布団 に 腰 を 下ろす と 、憲夫 は 部屋 の 中 を ぐるり と 見渡した 。

古い 土 壁 に は 、すっかり 黄ばんで しまった セロハンテープ で 、いくつか 車 の ポスター が 貼って あり 、床 に は 同じく 車関係 の 雑誌 が あちこち に 積まれている 。 正直 、それ 以外 、何も ない 部屋 だった 。

若い 女 の ポスター が ある わけで も なし 、テレビ も 、ラジカセ も ない 。

ある とき 房枝 が 、「祐一 の 部屋 は ここ じゃ なくて 、自分 の 車 の 中 や もん 」と 言って いた が 、この 部屋 を 見る と 、房枝 の 言葉 が 大げさ で は なかった の が よく 分かる 。

捲ろう と した パンフレット を 投げ出して 、憲夫 は 低い テーブル に 置かれた 給料 袋 を 手 に 取った 。

先週 、自分 が 渡した 袋 だった が 、手 に した 瞬間 、中 に 何も 入って いない の が 分かる 。 封筒 の 横 に ガソリン スタンド の レシート が あった 。

見る つもり も なかった のだ が 、やはり なんとなく 手 に 取る と 、５９９０ 円 と 記さ れた 金額 の 下 に 、佐賀 大和 の 地名 が ある 。

「昨日 か 」

憲夫 は レシート の 日付 を 口 に した 。

口 に して すぐ 、「『昨日 は どこ に も 行っとらん よ 』って 言い よった のに なぁ 」と 首 を 傾げた 。 ボトッ と 重い 音 が シンク に 響いて 、半開き の 口 を こちら に 向けた 頭 が 、排水 口 へ 滑って いく 。

廊下 を 歩いて くる 足音 に 振り返る と 、パンツ 一 枚 の 祐一 が 、テーブル に あった かまぼこ を 一つ くわえて 風呂場 へ 向かう 。

「憲夫 は もう 帰った と ね ？ 房枝 は その 背中 に 尋ねた 。

くちゃくちゃ と かまぼこ を 噛み ながら 振り返った 祐一 が 、黙って 自分 の 部屋 を 指さす 。

「お前 の 部屋 で 何 し よる と ？ 「 さ ぁ 」

祐一 は 首 を 傾げて 風呂場 の ドア を 開けた 。

木枠 に ガラス を はめ込んだ ドア が 、まるで 薄い トタン の ように 大きく しなり 、大げさな 音 を 立てる 。

脱衣 所 が ない ので 、祐一 は その場 で パンツ を さっと おろし 、身 を 震わせ ながら 風呂場 へ 駆け込んだ 。

白い 尻 が すっと 残像 の ように 流れて いく 。 再び 閉め られた ドア が 、割れ そうな ほど ガシャン と 音 を 立てた 。

房枝 は 包丁 を 持ち 直して 、ブリ の 身 を 切り分け 始めた 。

階段 を 下りて くる 足音 が 響き 、「おばさん 、帰る けん 」と 憲夫 の 声 が 聞こえた とき 、房枝 は 鍋 の 中 に みそ を といて いた 。

手 が 離せず 、「ああ 、また おいで よ 」と 声 を 返した 。

立て付け の 悪い 玄関 が ガラガラ と 音 を 立て 、家 全体 が 軋む ように ドア が 閉まる 。

遠ざかる 憲夫 の 足音 が 消えて しまう と 、一瞬 、台所 に は 鍋 の 音 だけ が 残る 。

静かな もん だ 、と 房枝 は 思う 。

ほとんど 寝たきり と は いえ 勝治 が おり 、年 を とった と は いえ 自分 が いる 。 その 上 、若い 盛り の 祐一 が すぐ そこ で 風呂 に 入っている に も かかわらず 、恐ろしい ほど 静かな 家 だった 。

みそ の 香り を 嗅ぎ ながら 、房枝 は 風呂場 の 祐一 に 声 を かけた 。

「今朝 、二日酔い やったって ？ と 訊く と 、返事 の 代わり に 、ザブン と 湯 から 出る 水音 が する 。

「どこ で 飲んどった と ね ？ 返事 は なく 、お湯 を かぶる 音 が 返って くる 。

「車 で 出かけた と やろう に 、危な か ねぇ 」

房枝 は もう 返事 を 期待 して い なかった 。

沸騰 し そうな 鍋 の 火 を 消し 、魚 の 血 で 汚れた まな板 を 水 に つけた 。

風呂 から 出た 祐一 が すぐに 食べられる ように 、ブリ の 刺身 を 盛りつけ 、夕方 の うち に 揚げて おいた すり身 と 一緒に 食卓 に 並べた 。 炊飯器 を 開ける と 、米 も ふっくら 炊きあがって おり 、肌寒い 台所 に 濃い 湯気 が 立つ 。

勝治 が 病 に 臥す 前 は 、朝 三合 、夕方 五合 の 米 を 毎日 炊いた 。

男 二 人 の 胃袋 を 満たす のに 、この 十五 年 、ずっと 米 を 研いで いた ような 気 さえ する 。

子供 の ころ から 、祐一 は よく ごはん を 食べた 。

沢庵 一 切れ 与えれば 、それ で 軽々 と 茶碗 一杯 の ごはん を 食べる ほど 、炊きたて の 米 が 好きだった 。

食べた もの は 全部 身 に なった 。

中学 に 入学 した ぐらい から 、毎朝 、祐一 の 身長 が ちょっと ずつ 伸びている ので は ない か と 思う ほど だった 。

房枝 は 自分 が 作り 与える 食事 で 、一人 の 少年 が 一端 の 男 に 成長 して いく 姿 を 、呆れ ながら も 感嘆 の 思い で 眺めて きた 。

男の子 に 恵まれ なかった こと も ある が 、娘 たち の とき に は 味わえ なかった 何か 、女 の 本能 の ような もの を 、孫 を 育てて いく うちに 感じて いる 自分 に 気づいた 。

もちろん 当初 は 、実の 親 である 次女 の 依子 に どこ か 遠慮 していた ところ も あった 。

しかし 、その 依子 が まだ 小学生 の 祐一 を 置いて 、男 と 姿 を 消して から は 、これ で 自分 が 祐一 を 育てられる のだ と 、娘 の 不貞 を 嘆き ながら も 、力 の 漲って くる 思い が あった 。 房枝 は 、五十 歳 に なろう と していた 。

男 に 捨てられた 依子 に 連れられて 、この 家 に やってきた とき 、祐一 は すでに 母親 を 信じて いない ように 見えた 。 口 で は 、「お母さん 、お母さん 」と 甘えて みせる のだが 、その 目 は もう 依子 を 見て い なかった 。 当時 、依子 の 目 を 盗んで 、房枝 は 孫 の 祐一 に こっそり と 昔 の 写真 を 見せ 、「お母さん より 、おばあちゃん の ほう が 美人 やろ が ？ 」と 冗談 半分 に 訊いた こと が ある 。

自分 で は 冗談 の つもり だった のだ が 、埃 を 被った 結婚式 の アルバム を 押し入れ から 取り出す とき 、どこか 緊張している 自分 に 気づいて も いた 。

祐一 は 差し出さ れた 写真 を 見て 、しばらく 黙り 込んで いた 。

その 小さな 後 頭部 を 見下ろして いる うち に 、自分 が とんでもない こと を している ような 気 が とつぜん してきた 。

房枝 は 思わず アルバム を 閉じ 、「おばあちゃん が 美人 な もんか ね 、あー 、恥ずかし 、恥ずかし 」と 年 甲斐 もなく 顔 を 赤らめた 。

初めて 入院 した とき に 買った 合革 の バッグ だった が 、どうせ 一 度 使う だけ だろう と 安物 を 選んだ のに 、入退院 の 繰り返し で 、今では 縫い目 まで 綻び 始めて いる 。

「お茶 やら 、ふりかけ は 、明日 、私 が 持っていく けん 」

口 の 中 が 渇く らしく 、音 を 立てて 唾 を 呑み込んで いる 勝治 に 、房枝 は 声 を かけた 。

「祐一 は もう メシ 食うた と か ？ 時間 を かけて 寝返り を 打った 勝治 が 、這う ように 布団 を 出て 、房枝 が 運んで きた 夕食 の 盆 へ 近づいて いく 。

「ブリ の 刺身 、食べる なら 持ってくる よ 」

野菜 の 煮物 と おかゆ だけ の 食事 に 、勝治 が ため息 を ついた ので 、房枝 は 慌てて そう 言った 。
