先週 も 話しました が 、ワクチン 接種 が だいぶ 進んで いて 、人々 の 動き が とても 活発に なって 来ました 。 更に は これ まで あった 多く の パンデミック 関連 の 規制 が 今月 6月 15日 から 解除 されたり 大幅に 緩く なる と いう こと で 、すごく 賑やかに なる ので は ない か と 予想 されます 。 6月 から 多く の 学校 は 夏 休み に 入る という こと で 、

ニュース を 見て いたり 、ソーシャルメディア を 見て いたり する と 、旅行 を 計画 したり パーティー を 計画 したり している 人 たち が 多い です 。

一方 で 私 は 、なんか 出遅れて る と いう か 、

パンデミック で Stay at Home に なった 時 も そう だった のです が 、世間 の この 急激な 動き に ついて行けない というか 、

一旦 自粛 で あまり 出歩か ない こと に 慣れて しまった ので 、そこ から 一気に 色々 活動 しよう ！ って 気分 に まだ なれ ず に います 。 ちょっと 活気 あふれる 世間 から 置いて いかれて いる 感 が 強く あります が 、私 は 私の ペース で 、少しずつ 色々 楽しんで 行きます ！ 今年 の 夏 は 遠出 は しない ものの 、ちょっと した 旅行 も 計画 済み です し 、色々 やりたい こと も 考えて います 。 この 夏 の 計画 に ついて も 、来週 あたり お話ししよう か な と 考えて います 。 さて 、アメリカ の 永住権 、グリーンカード の 進捗状況 に ついて アップデート させて ください 。

去年 2020 年 に Diversity Visa ,通称 DV lottery と 呼ばれ る グリーン カード の 抽選 に 当たり まして 、その 手続き を している 私たち 夫婦 です が 、

パンデミック の 影響 で 移民 局 、また 各国 に ある アメリカ 大使館 の プロセス が 滞って いて 、2020 年 の 当選者 に ついて は グリーンカード の 発行 まで 完了 できる 人 が いつも の 年 と 比べて 大幅に 少なく なる と 言われて います 。 私 たち は 既に アメリカ 国 内 で 暮らして いる 当選者 という こと で 、同じ ような 環境 に いる 当選者 が 何人 くらい いる の か は 不明です が 、

アメリカ 国 外 に いる 当選者 と は 少し 状況 が 異なる と いう こと で 、プロセス が 上手く 進んで くれる ので は ない か 、と いう 希望 を 捨てず 、ポジティブに 待って います 。 状況 の アップ デート の 内容 と しては 、

先月 5月 の 上旬 に 必要な 書類 を 揃えて 移民局 に 郵送 した んです が 、

つい 先日 、その 書類 に 同封 して いた 手数料 の 小切手 が 引き落とさ れた こと が 銀行 の ステートメント で 確認 できました 。 事前 情報 でも 、だいたい 書類 が 到着 して から 1 ヶ月 くらい で 手数料 の チャージ が 実際に 発生する と 聞いていました 。 本当 は 同じ くらい に 「書類 を 受取りました よ 」と いう Notice of Action と いう 受領 連絡 が 届く はずな のです が 、それ は まだ 届いて いません 。 おそらく 週明け に は 来る と 思います 。 そこ から 書類 を チェック されてる と 思う のです が 、問題 なければ Biometorics 指紋 の 採取 の スケジューリング 連絡 が 届いて 、それ が 終わり 、更に 進む と インタビュー が ある … と いう 流れ です 。

そんな 1 週間 2 週間 とか で 進む 内容 で は なく 、まだまだ 時間 が かかる のです が 、今回 その 手数料 が 引き落とさ れた と いう こと で 、プロセス は 進んでる と思う ので 、

希望 を 持って 待ちたい と 思います 。 ちなみに 手数料 は 1人 ＄1,225 、2人 合わせて ＄2,450 、約 25万 円 支払って います 。 ポイント は 支払った から と 言って 必ずしも グリーン カード が 取得 できる わけで は ない と いう こと で 、

いや ー 、 なかなか 厳しい です ねぇ 。

この 手数料 以外 に も 、一番 最初に 支払う 手数料 、そして 健康 診断 の お金 など も あり 、結構な 額 を 支払っている ので 、

どうにか こう に か 、取得 まで 進んで くれれば と 思います 。 はい 、さて 今日 の エピソード です が 、

カレッジ の クラス の 春 学期 の 成績 が 出た ので ご 報告 します 。 カレッジ の ひと 学期 目 、大変だった こと や 感じた こと など も 含めて お 話し して いきたい と 思います 。 ★アラフォー On Campus

この コーナー で は 、アラフォー の 私 が アメリカ 人 の 若者 に 混ざって カレッジ で 勉強 する 様子 に ついて お話して います 。 さて 、春学期 が 終わって 現在 は 夏 の クラス スタート まで の インターバル なのです が 、春学期 の 成績 が 全部 出揃いました ！ 春 学期 は 4 クラス 取って いた のです が 、

結果 から お 伝え します と 、4 クラス とも 「 A 」でした ！ 頑張った ！

まず 心配 だった 数学 、 Math です ね 。

統計 学 の クラス だった んです が 、クラス が スタート して すぐに 、「あ 、これ は ヤバイ ぞ 」って 感じました 。 と いう の も 、まず 元々 私 数学 が すごく 苦手 で 、高校 の 時 は 入学 以降 ずっと 赤点 で 毎回 補習 を 受ける レベル でした 。

でも 、以前 別 の クラス で 基本 の algebra 、代数 です ね 、x と か y と か 出てくる やつ 。 の クラス を 取った 時 も 、最初 は 大丈夫 かな 、心配 だな って 思って いた のです が 、

いざ 授業 が 始まる と 案外 どうにか なって 、

英語 に ついて も 心配 して いた のです が 、問題 の 数字 を 見る と 、なんとか 解ける もん なんです よね 。

ただ 、日本 で 私 が 習って 来た アルジェブラ の 解き方 と 、クラス で 先生 が 教えて いた 解き方 は ちょっと 違って 、それに 混乱 は しました 。 結局 、私 は 自分 が 知っていた 日本 の 解き方 で そのまま やりました 。 その アルジェブラ 、代数 の クラス も 最終的に 良い 成績 で 終える こと が できて 、少し 自信 が ついた んです よね 。

高校 生 の 頃 は 本当に 数学 理解 でき なくて 、諦めちゃった んです よ 、だから 勉強 も 全然 しなくて 、結果 、毎回 赤点 って いう 。 だけど 大人 に なった 今 、真面目に 理解 しよう と 勉強 すれば 、苦手だ と思っていた 数学 も どうにか なる かも ！ と 。

で 、今回 です よ 。 統計 学 が ビジネス 専攻 だ と 必須 科目 な ので 取ら なくちゃ ならなくて 、受ける こと に なって 、

アルジェブラ なら 若い 頃 一応 やった 内容 です が 、統計 学 は 初めて 習う 内容 で 少し ドキドキ して いた んです が 、

ま ぁそ の 前回 ついた 自信 で 、どうにか なる だろう と 。 思って いました 。 しかし 授業 が スタート したら その 自信 は 崩れ落ちて です ね 、

まず 、出てくる 英語 が 、専門用語 が 難しくて 、問題文 も 難しくて 、それに ひぇ ーーーー と なりました 。 本気 で 何 言って る の か 最初 全然 わから なくて 、

で 「あ 、これ は ヤバイ ぞ 」と思いました 。 宿題 を 解く の に も すごく 時間 が かかって 大変でした 。

アメリカ の コミュニティカレッジ の 数学 の クラス で は よく 使われて いる みたいな んです けど 、 Pearson の MyLab って いう オンライン の 学習 サイト を ベース に 宿題 や テスト が 進んでいく んです が 、各 問題 に 一応 解説 が 載っていて 、 わから ない 問題 は それ を 時間 を かけて 読んで 、何度 も 同じ ような 問題 を 解いて 練習 する ように して 、すごく 時間 が かかりました 。 今回 、春学期 は パンデミック の 影響 で 全て の クラス が オンライン だった のです が 、

数学 が 一 番 、オンライン だ と 大変 だ な と 思いました ね 。 気軽に 質問 でき ない と いう か 、

オンライン クラス でも 、もちろん 先生 に メール で 質問 も できます し 、オフィスアワー って 言って 、 Zoom で 先生 と 一対一 で 質問 できる 時間 とかも あるんです が 、わからない こと が 沢山 だし 、 数学 は 特に メール だ と 質問 する の 難しい し 、 Zoom だと かしこまった 感じ が して 緊張する し で 、なかなか 質問しづらかった な と 思います 。 これ が 実際 に キャンパス で 行わ れ る クラス だったら 、

授業 中 や 授業 後 、 あと は オフィスアワー に 先生 の 部屋 に 言って 直接 聞く こと が できる ので 切る のに な ー と 思いました ね 。 一番 大変だった の は mid term と Final で 、中間 テスト と 期末 テスト です ね 。

何 が 大変 だった の か と いう と 、

普段 は 、その オンライン 学習 サイト で 宿題 も チャプターテスト も 管理 されて いて 、その 出題 方法 に 慣れて いたんです が 、 midtermと ファイナル は 、先生 が 作成 した 問題 が 出題 された んです よ 。

だ から 問題 の 文章 とか 、答え 方 とか が 普段 と 全然 違って 戸惑いました 。 オンライン サイト であれば 、事前 に 練習 問題 を 沢山 解いたり して 、答え が あっている か 確認 したり 、

答え 方 も 空欄 に 数字 を 入力 して 答える 感じ で 、

なんて 言ったら いい んです かね 、なんとなく 、こういう 数字 を 求めてる の ね …みたいな の が 予測 できる ような 作り に なってる んです 。

あ 、この パターン の 問題 か 。 みたいな 感じ で 、いつも 宿題 と か で 沢山 やってる から 、パターン が わかる ように なってくる と いう か 。

でも 先生 が 作った オリジナルの 問題 だ と 、

え 、これ は どの パターン だ ？ どの 解き 方 で 解けば いい 問題 な の か な ？ って いう の が わから なくて 、

めっちゃ ビビ りました 。 一応 mid term 、final それぞれ Study guide って いう 練習 問題 を 先生 が くれて 、これ と 似た ような 問題 が テスト でも 出ます よ ー 的な もの を 教えて くれる んです けど 、その 練習 問題 を 解いて も 、自分 だけ で は 解き方 が あってる か どうか わからなくて 、 ここ は 積極的に 先生 と コミュニケーション を 取って 、練習 問題 を 解いた PDF を 送って 、一通り 解き方 が 合っている か チェックして もらったり 、アドバイス を もらったりました 。 以前 も いつか の エピソード で 話した んです が 、

この 数学 の 先生 の ちょっと 変わった ユーモア の センス が 好きで 、先生 の レクチャービデオ とか を 見る の を 楽しみに していて 、

そういう 面 で は 、授業 を 受ける の が 楽しく なる ような 、良い 先生 でした 。

ただ 、先生 の 問題 の 解き方 と 、その オンライン 学習 サイト が 推奨 している 解き方 が ちょっと 違う って こと が 結構 あった んです よ 。 「 ん ？ あれ 、どうして そう なる の ？ 」って なる こと が 多くて 、メール で 質問 を したり も もちろん したんですけど 、疑問 に 思う こと 全て を 聞いて いたら 毎日 すごく 細かな こと で メール を する こと に なって しまう 感じ で 、 これ が キャンパス で 受ける 通常 の in-person の クラス だったら 数学 って ほぼ 毎日 授業 が ある ので 、いつでも 質問 できて それほど 問題 で は なかった と 思います が 、なんか ちょっと した 質問 も メール で 聞か なきゃ ならない のが 結構 ストレス でした ね 。 数学 に 限って で は ないで すけど 、

他の 生徒 が どの くらい 先生 に メール 送って 質問 している の か わからない じゃないですか 。

私 、質問 し すぎ か な 、メール 送り すぎ か なって 心配に なる こと が ありました 。 質問 する 、メール で 先生 に 連絡 を 取る って 良い こと だ と 思います けど 、やる気 を アピール できる しね 。 でも すごく 細かな こと とか 、ちょっと した 確認 とかも 多くて 、私 は 不安だ から 聞く んですけど 、先生 から したら 「また こいつ か 、こんな 細かな こと 気に して 。」 って 思われて ない か なって 思っちゃ う んです よ 。 気 に し すぎ ？

特に オンライン 授業 で 先生 以外 に 聞ける 友達 や クラスメイト も いなくて 、で 、あまり その アメリカ の 授業 の 進み方 とかも わからない ので 、

自分 が 感じて いる 疑問 が 他の クラスメイト に とって は 当然の こと で 、実は 私 だけ が わかってない って こと が ある んじゃないか って 心配な んです 。 ちょっと した こと だ し 、少し 疑問 が ある けど 、まあ いい や 、ひとまず 自分 が 思う 方法 で 進む か ！ って こと も できる んです が 、

もしかしたら 自分 だけ が わかって ない かも しれ ない じゃない ですか 。

どの 先生 も 、いつでも 質問 して ね 。 と いう 言い方 を する んです が 、

いざ 多く の 質問 を する と 、なんか 「あなた は もう いい 点数 を 取ってる んだ から 、そんな 細かな ところ まで 気にしなくて も いい の よ ー 」的な 雰囲気 を 出してくる 先生 も いて 、

でも 私 から する と 、いくら その 時点 で 良い 成績 だった と しても 、いつ 急に 理解 できなく なって 悪い 点数 を 取って しまう かも しれない って いう 不安 が 常に ある ので 、その 時 に ある 疑問 は 理解して おきたい し 、それ から 先生 の 点数 の 付け方 に 間違い が あった 場合 の 指摘 とかも そう なんです けど 、 ほんの 1 点 とか 、時に は 0.5 点 とか に ついて なん です が 、

たぶん 先生 から みたら 「あなた は 十分 合格点 な んだ から 、そんな 細かい ところ いい じゃない 」って 思われてる んです けど 、私 は 今後 自分 が このまま 良い 点数 で いける か わからない から 、0.5 点 でも 1 点 でも 取れる 点 は 取って おきたい って 思う んです よね 。 なんか そういう やりとり が 、かなり ストレス でした 。
