一 秋天 的 后半夜 ，月亮 下去 了 ，太阳 还 没有 出 ，只 剩下 一片 乌蓝 的 天 ；除了 夜游 的 东西 ，什么 都 睡着 。 华老栓 忽然 坐 起身 ，擦 着 火柴 ，点上 遍身 油腻 的 灯盏 ，茶馆 的 两间 屋子 里 ，便 弥满 了 青白 的 光 。 “小栓 的 爹 ，你 就 去 么 ？ ”是 一个 老 女人 的 声音 。 里边 的 小 屋子 里 ，也 发出 一阵 咳嗽 。 “唔 。 ”老栓 一面 听 ，一面 应 ，一面 扣上 衣服 ；伸手 过去 说 ，“你 给 我 罢 。 ” 华 大妈 在 枕头 底下 掏 了 半天 ， 掏出 一包 洋钱 ⑵， 交给 老栓 ， 老栓接 了 ， 抖抖 的 装入 衣袋 ， 又 在 外面 按 了 两下 ； 便点 上 灯笼 ， 吹熄 灯盏 ， 走向 里 屋子 去 了 。 那 屋子 里面 ，正在 窸窸窣窣 的 响 ，接着 便是 一通 咳嗽 。 老栓 候 他 平静 下去 ，才 低低的 叫 道 ，“小栓 ……你 不要 起来 。 ……店 么 ？ 你 娘 会 安排 的 。 ”老栓 听 得 儿子 不再 说话 ，料 他 安心 睡 了 ；便 出了 门 ，走 到 街上 。 街上 黑沉沉 的 一无所有 ，只有 一条 灰白 的 路 ，看得 分明 。 灯光 照着 他 的 两脚 ，一前一后 的 走 。 有时 也 遇到 几只 狗 ，可是 一只 也 没有 叫 。 天气 比 屋子里 冷 多 了 ；老栓 倒 觉 爽快 ，仿佛 一旦 变 了 少年 ，得 了 神通 ，有 给 人 生命 的 本领 似的 ，跨步 格外 高远 。 而且 路 也 愈 走 愈 分明 ，天 也 愈 走 愈 亮 了 。 老栓 正在 专心 走路 ，忽然 吃 了 一惊 ，远远 里 看见 一条 丁字街 ，明明白白 横着 。 他 便 退 了 几步 ，寻 到 一家 关着 门 的 铺子 ，蹩进 檐下 ，靠门 立住 了 。 好 一会 ，身上 觉得 有些 发冷 。 “哼 ，老头子 。 ”“倒 高兴 ……。 ”老栓 又 吃 一惊 ，睁 眼 看 时 ，几个 人 从 他 面前 过去 了 。 一个 还 回头 看 他 ，样子 不 甚 分明 ，但 很 像 久 饿 的 人 见 了 食物 一般 ，眼里 闪出 一种 攫取 的 光 。 老栓 看看 灯笼 ，已经 熄 了 。 按 一 按 衣袋 ，硬硬 的 还 在 。 仰起 头 两面 一望 ，只见 许多 古怪 的 人 ，三三两两 ，鬼 似的 在 那里 徘徊 ；定睛 再 看 ，却 也 看不出 什么 别的 奇怪 。 没有 多久 ，又 见 几个 兵 ，在 那边 走动 ；衣服 前后 的 一个 大 白 圆圈 ，远 地里 也 看得 清楚 ，走过 面前 的 ，并且 看出 号衣 ⑶上 暗红 的 镶边 。 ——一阵 脚步 声响 ，一眨眼 ，已经 拥过 了 一大 簇 人 。 那 三三两两 的 人 ，也 忽然 合作 一堆 ，潮 一般 向 前进 ；将 到 丁字街口 ，便 突然 立住 ，簇成 一个 半圆 。 老栓 也 向 那边 看 ，却 只见 一堆 人 的 后背 ；颈项 都 伸得 很 长 ，仿佛 许多 鸭 ，被 无形 的 手 捏住 了 的 ，向上 提 着 。 静 了 一会 ， 似乎 有点 声音 ， 便 又 动摇 起来 ， 轰的一声 ， 都 向 后退 ； 一直 散到 老栓立 着 的 地方 ， 几乎 将 他 挤 倒 了 。 “喂 ！ 一手 交 钱 ，一手 交 货 ！ ”一个 浑身 黑色 的 人 ，站 在 老栓 面前 ，眼光 正像 两把 刀 ，刺 得 老栓 缩小 了 一半 。 那 人 一只 大 手 ，向 他 摊着 ；一只 手 却 撮着 一个 鲜红 的 馒头 ⑷，那 红 的 还是 一点一点 的 往下 滴 。 老栓 慌忙 摸 出 洋钱 ，抖抖 的 想 交给 他 ，却 又 不敢 去 接 他 的 东西 。 那人 便 焦急 起来 ，嚷 道 ，“怕 什么 ？ 怎 的 不 拿 ！ ”老栓 还 踌躇 着 ；黑 的 人 便 抢 过 灯笼 ，一把 扯 下 纸罩 ，裹 了 馒头 ，塞 与 老栓 ；一手 抓 过 洋钱 ，捏 一捏 ，转身 去 了 。 嘴里 哼 着 说 ，“这 老东西 ……。 ”“这 给 谁 治病 的 呀 ？ ”老栓 也 似乎 听得 有人 问 他 ，但 他 并 不 答应 ；他 的 精神 ，现在 只 在 一个 包 上 ，仿佛 抱 着 一个 十世单传 的 婴儿 ，别的 事情 ，都 已 置之度外 了 。 他 现在 要 将 这 包里 的 新 的 生命 ，移植 到 他 家里 ，收获 许多 幸福 。 太阳 也 出来 了 ；在 他 面前 ，显出 一条 大道 ，直到 他 家中 ，后面 也 照见 丁字街 头破 匾上 “古 □亭口 ”这 四个 黯淡 的 金字 。

二 老栓 走 到 家 ，店面 早经 收拾 干净 ，一排 一排 的 茶桌 ，滑溜溜 的 发光 。 但是 没有 客人 ；只有 小栓 坐在 里排 的 桌前 吃饭 ，大粒 的 汗 ，从 额 上 滚下 ，夹袄 也 帖住 了 脊心 ，两块 肩胛骨 高高 凸出 ，印成 一个 阳文 的 “八 ”字 。 老栓 见 这 样子 ，不免 皱 一皱 展开 的 眉心 。 他 的 女人 ，从 灶下 急急 走出 ，睁着 眼睛 ，嘴唇 有些 发抖 。 “得 了 么 ？ ”“得 了 。 ”两个 人 一齐 走进 灶下 ，商量 了 一会 ；华 大妈 便 出去 了 ，不多时 ，拿着 一片 老 荷叶 回来 ，摊 在 桌上 。 老栓 也 打开 灯 笼罩 ，用 荷叶 重新 包 了 那 红 的 馒头 。 小栓 也 吃完饭 ，他 的 母亲 慌忙 说 ：“小栓 ——你 坐着 ，不要 到 这里 来 。 ”一面 整顿 了 灶火 ，老栓 便 把 一个 碧绿 的 包 ，一个 红红 白白 的 破 灯笼 ，一同 塞 在 灶 里 ；一阵 红黑 的 火焰 过去 时 ，店屋 里 散满 了 一种 奇怪 的 香味 。 “好 香 ！ 你们 吃 什么 点心 呀 ？ ”这 是 驼背 五 少爷 到 了 。 这 人 每天 总在 茶馆 里 过 日 ， 来得 最早 ， 去 得 最迟 ， 此时 恰恰 蹩到 临街 的 壁角 的 桌边 ， 便 坐下 问话 ， 然而 没有 人 答应 他 。 “炒米 粥 么 ？ ”仍然 没有 人 应 。 老栓 匆匆 走出 ，给 他 泡上 茶 。 “小栓 进来 罢 ！ ”华 大妈 叫 小栓 进 了 里面 的 屋子 ，中间 放好 一 条 凳 ，小栓 坐 了 。 他 的 母亲 端过 一 碟 乌黑 的 圆 东西 ，轻轻 说 ：“吃 下去 罢 ，——病 便 好 了 。 ”小栓 撮 起 这 黑 东西 ，看 了 一会 ，似乎 拿 着 自己 的 性命 一般 ，心里 说不出 的 奇怪 。 十分 小心 的 拗开 了 ，焦皮 里面 窜出 一道 白气 ，白气 散 了 ，是 两半个 白面 的 馒头 。 ——不 多 工夫 ，已经 全 在 肚里 了 ，却 全 忘 了 什么 味 ；面前 只 剩下 一张 空 盘 。 他 的 旁边 ，一面 立着 他 的 父亲 ，一面 立着 他 的 母亲 ，两人 的 眼光 ，都 仿佛 要 在 他 身上 注进 什么 又 要 取出 什么 似的 ；便 禁不住 心跳 起来 ，按着 胸膛 ，又 是 一阵 咳嗽 。 “睡 一会 罢 ，——便 好 了 。 ” 小栓 依 他 母亲 的话 ， 咳着 睡 了 。 华 大妈 候 他 喘气 平静 ，才 轻轻 的 给 他 盖 上 了 满幅 补钉 的 夹被 。

三 店里 坐着 许多 人 ，老栓 也 忙 了 ，提着 大 铜壶 ，一趟 一趟 的 给 客人 冲茶 ；两个 眼眶 ，都 围着 一圈 黑线 。 “老栓 ，你 有些 不 舒服 么 ？ ——你 生病 么 ？ ”一个 花白 胡子 的 人 说 。 “没有 。 ”“没有 ？ ——我 想 笑嘻嘻 的 ，原 也 不 像 ……”花白 胡子 便 取消 了 自己的 话 。 “老栓 只是 忙 。 要是 他 的 儿子 ……”驼背 五 少爷 话 还 未 完 ，突然 闯进 了 一个 满脸 横肉 的 人 ，披 一件 玄色 布 衫 ，散着 纽扣 ，用 很 宽 的 玄色 腰带 ，胡乱 捆 在 腰间 。 刚 进门 ，便 对 老栓 嚷 道 ：“吃 了 么 ？ 好 了 么 ？ 老栓 ，就是 运气 了 你 ！ 你 运气 ，要不是 我 信息 灵 ……。 ”老栓 一 手提 了 茶壶 ，一 手 恭恭敬敬 的 垂 着 ；笑嘻嘻 的 听 。 满座 的 人 ，也 都 恭恭敬敬 的 听 。 华 大妈 也 黑 着 眼眶 ，笑嘻嘻 的 送 出 茶碗 茶叶 来 ，加上 一个 橄榄 ，老栓 便 去 冲 了 水 。 “这 是 包好 ！ 这是 与众不同 的 。 你 想 ，趁热 的 拿来 ，趁热 的 吃 下 。 ”横肉 的 人 只是 嚷 。 “真的 呢 ，要 没有 康 大叔 照顾 ，怎么 会 这样 ……”华 大妈 也 很 感激 的 谢 他 。 “ 包 好 ， 包 好 ！ 这样 的 趁热 吃 下 。 这样 的 人 血馒头 ，什么 痨病 都 包好 ！ ”华 大妈 听到 “痨病 ”这 两个 字 ，变 了 一点 脸色 ，似乎 有些 不 高兴 ；但 又 立刻 堆上 笑 ，搭讪 着 走开 了 。 这 康 大叔 却 没有 觉察 ，仍然 提高 了 喉咙 只是 嚷 ，嚷 得 里面 睡着 的 小栓 也 合伙 咳嗽 起来 。 “原来 你家 小栓 碰到 了 这样 的 好运气 了 。 这 病 自然 一定 全好 ；怪不得 老栓 整天 的 笑 着 呢 。 ”花白 胡子 一面 说 ，一面 走到 康 大叔 面前 ，低声下气 的 问道 ，“康 大叔 ——听说 今天 结果 的 一个 犯人 ，便是 夏家 的 孩子 ，那 是 谁 的 孩子 ？ 究竟 是 什么 事 ？ ”“谁 的 ？ 不 就是 夏四 奶奶 的 儿子 么 ？ 那个 小家伙 ！ ”康 大叔 见 众人 都 耸 起 耳朵 听 他 ，便 格外 高兴 ，横肉 块块 饱绽 ，越发 大声 说 ，“这 小 东西 不要命 ，不要 就是 了 。 我 可是 这 一回 一点 没有 得到 好处 ；连 剥 下来 的 衣服 ，都 给 管牢 的 红 眼睛 阿义 拿去 了 。 ——第一 要 算 我们 栓叔 运气 ；第二 是 夏 三爷 赏 了 二十五 两 雪白 的 银子 ，独自 落 腰包 ，一文 不花 。 ”小栓 慢慢 的 从 小 屋子 里 走出 ，两手 按 了 胸口 ，不住 的 咳嗽 ；走到 灶下 ，盛出 一碗 冷饭 ，泡上 热水 ，坐下 便 吃 。 华 大妈 跟着 他 走 ，轻轻 的 问道 ， “ 小栓 ，你 好些 么 ？ ——你 仍旧 只是 肚饿 ？ ……” “ 包 好 ， 包 好 ！ ”康 大叔 瞥 了 小栓 一眼 ，仍然 回过 脸 ，对 众人 说 ，“夏 三爷 真是 乖 角儿 ，要是 他 不 先 告官 ，连 他 满门 抄斩 。 现在 怎样 ？ 银子 ！ ——这 小 东西 也 真 不成 东西 ！ 关 在 劳里 ，还要 劝 劳头 造反 。 ”“阿 呀 ，那 还 了 得 。 ”坐在 后排 的 一个 二十多岁 的 人 ，很 现出 气愤 模样 。 “你 要 晓得 红 眼睛 阿义 是 去 盘盘 底细 的 ，他 却 和 他 攀谈 了 。 他 说 ：这 大清 的 天下 是 我们 大家 的 。 你 想 ：这 是 人话 么 ？ 红 眼睛 原 知道 他 家里 只有 一个 老娘 ，可是 没有 料到 他 竟 会 这么 穷 ，榨 不出 一点 油水 ，已经 气 破 肚皮 了 。 他 还要 老虎头 上 搔痒 ，便 给 他 两个 嘴巴 ！ ”“义哥 是 一手 好 拳棒 ，这 两下 ，一定 够 他 受用 了 。 ”壁角 的 驼背 忽然 高兴 起来 。 “他 这 贱骨头 打 不怕 ，还要 说 可怜 可怜 哩 。 ”花白 胡子 的 人 说 ，“打 了 这种 东西 ，有 什么 可怜 呢 ？ ”康 大叔 显出 看 他 不 上 的 样子 ，冷笑 着 说 ，“你 没有 听清 我 的话 ；看 他 神气 ，是 说 阿义 可怜 哩 ！ ”听 着 的 人 的 眼光 ，忽然 有些 板滞 ；话 也 停顿 了 。 小栓 已经 吃完 饭 ，吃 得 满头 流汗 ，头上 都 冒出 蒸气 来 。 “阿义 可怜 ——疯话 ，简直 是 发 了 疯 了 。 ”花白 胡子 恍然大悟 似的 说 。 “ 发了 疯 了 。 ”二十多岁 的 人 也 恍然大悟 的 说 。 店里 的 坐客 ，便 又 现出 活气 ，谈笑 起来 。 小栓 也 趁着 热闹 ，拚命 咳嗽 ；康 大叔 走上 前 ，拍 他 肩膀 说 ：“包 好 ！ 小栓 ——你 不要 这么 咳 。 包 好 ！ ”“疯 了 。 ”驼背 五 少爷 点着头 说 。

四 西 关外 靠着 城根 的 地面 ，本是 一块 官地 ；中间 歪歪斜斜 一条 细路 ，是 贪 走 便道 的人 ，用 鞋底 造成 的 ，但 却 成了 自然 的 界限 。 路 的 左边 ， 都 埋 着 死刑 和 瘐 毙 的 人 ， 右边 是 穷人 的 丛 冢 。 两面 都 已 埋 到 层层叠叠 ，宛然 阔人家 里 祝寿 时 的 馒头 。 这 一年 的 清明 ，分外 寒冷 ；杨柳 才 吐出 半粒 米 大 的新芽 。 天明 未久 ，华 大妈 已 在 右边 的 一 坐 新坟 前面 ，排出 四碟 菜 ，一碗 饭 ，哭 了 一场 。 化过 纸 ⑸ ，呆呆 的 坐 在 地上 ；仿佛 等候 什么 似的 ，但 自己 也 说不出 等候 什么 。 微风 起来 ，吹动 他 短发 ，确乎 比 去年 白得 多 了 。 小 路上 又 来 了 一个 女人 ，也 是 半 白头发 ，褴褛 的 衣裙 ；提 一个 破旧 的 朱漆 圆篮 ，外挂 一串 纸锭 ，三步 一歇 的 走 。 忽然 见 华 大妈 坐 在 地上 看 他 ，便 有些 踌躇 ，惨白 的 脸上 ，现出 些 羞愧 的 颜色 ；但 终于 硬着头皮 ，走 到 左边 的 一 坐 坟 前 ，放下 了 篮子 。 那 坟 与 小栓 的 坟 ，一 字儿 排 着 ，中间 只 隔 一条 小路 。 华 大妈 看 他 排好 四 碟 菜 ，一碗 饭 ，立着 哭 了 一通 ，化过 纸锭 ；心里 暗暗 地 想 ，“这 坟里 的 也 是 儿子 了 。 ”那 老 女人 徘徊 观望 了 一回 ，忽然 手脚 有些 发抖 ，跄跄 踉踉 退 下 几步 ，瞪 着 眼 只是 发怔 。 华 大妈 见 这 样子 ，生怕 他 伤心 到 快要 发狂 了 ；便 忍不住 立 起身 ，跨过 小路 ，低声 对 他说 ， “ 你 这位 老奶奶 不要 伤心 了 ，—— 我们 还是 回去 罢 。 ” 那人点 一 点头 ， 眼睛 仍然 向上 瞪 着 ； 也 低声 吃 吃 的 说道 ，“ 你 看 ，—— 看 这 是 什么 呢 ？ ”华 大妈 跟 了 他 指头 看 去 ，眼光 便 到 了 前面 的 坟 ，这 坟 上 草根 还 没有 全 合 ，露出 一块 一块 的 黄土 ，煞 是 难看 。 再 往 上 仔细 看 时 ，却 不觉 也 吃 一惊 ；——分明 有 一圈 红白 的 花 ，围着 那 尖 圆 的 坟 顶 。 他们 的 眼睛 都 已 老花 多年 了 ，但 望 这 红白 的 花 ，却 还 能 明白 看见 。 花 也 不 很多 ，圆圆的 排成 一个 圈 ，不 很 精神 ，倒 也 整齐 。 华 大妈 忙 看 他 儿子 和 别人 的 坟 ，却 只有 不怕 冷 的 几点 青白 小花 ，零星 开着 ；便 觉得 心里 忽然 感到 一种 不足 和 空虚 ，不 愿意 根究 。 那 老 女 人 又 走近 几步 ，细看 了 一遍 ，自言自语 的 说 ，“这 没有 根 ，不像 自己 开 的 。 ——这 地方 有 谁 来 呢 ？ 孩子 不会 来 玩 ；——亲戚 本家 早 不 来 了 。 ——这 是 怎么 一 回事 呢 ？ ” 他 想了又想 ， 忽 又 流下泪来 ， 大声 说道 ： “ 瑜儿 ， 他们 都 冤枉 了 你 ， 你 还是 忘不了 ， 伤心 不过 ， 今天 特意 显点 灵 ， 要 我 知道 么 ？ ”他 四面 一看 ，只见 一只 乌鸦 ，站 在 一株 没有 叶 的 树 上 ，便 接着 说 ，“我 知道 了 。 ——瑜儿 ，可怜 他们 坑 了 你 ，他们 将来 总有 报应 ，天 都 知道 ；你 闭 了 眼睛 就是 了 。 ——你 如果 真 在 这里 ，听到 我 的话 ，——便 教 这 乌鸦 飞 上 你 的 坟 顶 ，给 我 看 罢 。 ”微风 早经 停息 了 ；枯草 支支 直立 ，有如 铜丝 。 一丝 发抖 的 声音 ，在 空气 中 愈 颤 愈 细 ，细到 没有 ，周围 便 都 是 死 一般 静 。 两人 站 在 枯 草丛 里 ，仰面 看 那 乌鸦 ； 那 乌鸦 也 在 笔直 的 树枝 间 ，缩着 头 ，铁铸 一般 站着 。 许多 的 工夫 过去 了 ；上坟 的 人 渐渐 增多 ，几个 老 的 小 的 ，在 土 坟间 出没 。 华 大妈 不知 怎 的 ，似乎 卸下 了 一 挑 重担 ，便 想到 要 走 ；一面 劝 着 说 ，“我们 还是 回去 罢 。 ”那 老 女 人 叹 一口气 ，无精打采 的 收起 饭菜 ；又 迟疑 了 一刻 ，终于 慢慢 地 走了 。 嘴里 自言自语 的 说 ，“这是 怎么 一 回事 呢 ？ ……”他们 走 不 上 二三十步 远 ，忽 听 得 背后 “哑 ——”的 一声 大叫 ；两个 人 都 悚然 的 回过 头 ，只见 那 乌鸦 张开 两翅 ，一 挫身 ，直 向着 远处 的 天空 ，箭 也 似的 飞去 了 。
