Jupiter announced that he intended to appoint a king over the birds, and named a day on which they were to appear before his throne, when he would select the most beautiful of them all to be their ruler.
أعلن جوبيتر أنه ينوي تعيين ملك على الطيور، وحدد يومًا لتظهر فيه أمام عرشه، حيث سيختار الأجمل بينهم جميعًا ليكون حاكمًا عليهم.
Jupiter annonça qu'il avait l'intention de nommer un roi sur les oiseaux et désigna un jour où ils devaient se présenter devant son trône, où il choisirait le plus beau d'entre eux pour être leur chef.
Wishing to look their best on the occasion they repaired to the banks of a stream, where they busied themselves in washing and preening their feathers.
أرادوا أن يظهروا في أفضل صورة في تلك المناسبة، فتوجهوا إلى ضفاف أحد الجداول، حيث انشغلوا بغسل وتنظيف ريشهم.
Désireux de se montrer sous leur meilleur jour pour l'occasion, ils se sont rendus au bord d'un ruisseau, où ils se sont occupés de laver et d'épiler leurs plumes.
The Jackdaw was there along with the rest, and realised that, with his ugly plumage, he would have no chance of being chosen as he was: so he waited till they were all gone, and then picked up the most gaudy of the feathers they had dropped, and fastened them about his own body, with the result that he looked gayer than any of them.
كان الغراب هناك مع البقية، وأدرك أنه مع ريشه القبيح، لن تكون لديه فرصة ليتم اختياره كما تم اختياره: لذلك انتظر حتى رحلوا جميعًا، ثم التقط الريش الأكثر بهجة الذي أسقطوه، وربطه حول جسده، وكانت النتيجة أنه بدا أكثر مرحًا من أي منهم.
Le choucas était là avec les autres, et il se rendit compte qu'avec son vilain plumage, il n'aurait aucune chance d'être choisi tel qu'il était. Il attendit donc qu'ils soient tous partis, puis il ramassa les plumes les plus voyantes qu'ils avaient laissées tomber, et les attacha autour de son corps, avec pour résultat qu'il avait l'air plus gai que n'importe lequel d'entre eux.
When the appointed day came, the birds assembled before Jupiter's throne; and, after passing them in review, he was about to make the Jackdaw king, when all the rest set upon the king-elect, stripped him of his borrowed plumes, and exposed him for the Jackdaw that he was.
عندما جاء اليوم المحدد، تجمعت الطيور أمام عرش جوبيتر؛ وبعد أن مر بها في المراجعة، كان على وشك تنصيب الغراب ملكًا، عندما نصب كل الباقي على الملك المنتخب، وجردوه من ريشه المستعار، وكشفوا عنه باعتباره الغراب الذي كان عليه.
Lorsque le jour fixé arriva, les oiseaux se rassemblèrent devant le trône de Jupiter et, après les avoir passés en revue, il s'apprêtait à nommer le choucas roi, lorsque tous les autres se jetèrent sur le roi élu, le dépouillèrent de ses plumes d'emprunt et le montrèrent tel qu'il était, c'est-à-dire un choucas.
