Let me see|||||||
Kids, may I see your teeth?
Sino na sa inyo ang nagkabukbok?
|||||had cavities
Who among you had a bad tooth?
||||||||missing tooth
Come on, smile and let's find out who has a missing tooth.
|||||||Doc|
This story of Tito Doc is about our teeth.
Imagine your Dad and Mom saying, "You need to go to the dentist."
Ano ang mararamdaman mo?
What would you feel?
Matatakot ka ba at iiyak?
Would you feel scared and cry?
O magiging matapang?
||"brave" or "courageous"
Or would you be brave?
What do you think happened to Ani when her Dad and
|||||||||damaged|
Mom said that her aching tooth must be examined by a dentist?
Samahan natin si Ani sa dentista!
Let's go with Ani to the dentist.
"Araaay! Aray ko-o-o-o!"
"Ouch! It hurts!"|"Ouch! It hurts!"||||
"Owww-w-w-w!"
Ani is almost crying because her tooth hurts badly.
Ngayon lang nangyari ito sa kanya.
Just now|||||
And it's the first time for Ani to have such a terrible toothache.
||||||||hurting||jaw
All day she has been holding her aching jaw.
Checked||||||||
She looked in the mirror and peered at her tooth.
At talagang nandiri siya sa nakita.
||disgusted|||
What she saw horrified her!
Ang itim-itim ng ngipin niya!
||black|||
There was a dark cavity in the center of her tooth.
"That's why my tooth is aching," Ani thought.
|||listlessly||||||||||||
When her parents arrived from the office that afternoon, Ani was still not feeling well.
||||touched||gift from travel||cheese brioche
She didn't even eat the ensaymada that her parents bought for her.
"Ang hilig-hilig mo kasi sa kendi.
"That's what you get for eating too many candies.
|||hole|||||||||||||Mother Lyn||||||
You've got a hole in one of your teeth," said her Mommy Lyn when she heard Ani complaining.
"Huwag kendi ang sisihin mo, mahal.
|||blame||
"Don't blame the candies, dear.
||lazy|||||replied|||Viyo
Truth is, Ani has been lazy when it comes to brushing her teeth," Daddy Viyo said.
"Oo nga.
"I think you're right.
Tomorrow morning, I'll take Ani to the dentist," said Mommy Lyn.
"D-Dentista?" Hindi makapaniwala si Ani sa kanyang narinig.
"D-Dentist?"||||||||
"D-Dentist?" Ani couldn't believe what she heard.
She was more afraid of the dentist than of anything else.
Nanlamig ang kanyang mga kamay.
Her hands became cold.
|because|||||||punishing|||
For her, the dentists were there to punish little children.
Parang mga kontrabida sa cartoons.
||villains in cartoons||cartoon villains
Just like bad people in cartoons.
"Oo, Ani. Patitingnan natin sa dentista ang ngipin mo.
"Yes, Ani. We'll let the dentist examine your tooth.
|rotten||||||pull out
If it's decaying, perhaps he will have to pull it out."
"Ay, ayoko po, Nanay!
"Oh no, please no, Mommy!
Ayokong pumunta sa dentista," iyak ni Ani.
I don't want to go," she whimpered.
"Ani, huwag matigas ang ulo.
||stubborn||
"Ani, don't be stubborn.
Dentists are friends to our teeth."
"Basta po, ayoko!
"No, I don't want to go to the dentist.
Maybe the ache will go away," Ani cried.
"O, hayan ka na naman. Ipinipilit mo na naman ang gusto mo.
|"There you go"||||"Insisting"||||||
"Ani, behave yourself. You always insist on what you want.
Haven't we told you to always brush your teeth after meals?
Ang hilig mo pa naman sa kendi.
And you eat too many sweets!
||||busy||||||remaining|||teeth|
Don't you know that tooth bacteria are very active when there's sugar left on your teeth?"
Nabalisa si Ani.
Ani was anxious.||Ani was worried.
Ani was anxious.
Hindi talaga siya papayag pumunta sa dentista.
|||will not agree|||
She wouldn't be persuaded to go to the dentist.
Pagdating ng hapon, pinilit niyang maging masaya.
|||forced|||
Later that afternoon, she tried to act happy.
Invited||||||||||||||
She even invited her friends, Nina and Joshua to come to their house.
Nagtaguan sila. Nagpiko at naghabulan sa playground.
They hid||peeked||chased each other||playground
They played hide-and-seek, and ran races, and played hopscotch in the playground.
Pero masakit pa rin ang ngipin niya.
But the toothache didn't go away.
||||||corner||sulked
Ani sat in one spot, sulking.
"Why Ani, are you sick?" asked her playmates.
"A-ang ngipin ko . . . ang sakit-sakit."
"M-My tooth . . . it hurts."
"Patingin nga."
"Can we take a look at it?"
"O, hayan, a-a-a-h-h-h-h!"
|there|||||||
"Oh, there, aahhhhhh!"
"Yuck! Ani, you've got tooth decay," said Nina, Ani's best friend.
"My uncle is a dentist and he says it's called dental caries.
Kaya pala masakit!"
That's why your tooth is aching!"
"Ganoon ba?"
is that so?|
"Really?"
"Oo.
"Yeah.
|||||purely||||worm
According to my uncle, the holes in our teeth come from bacteria."
"Ano 'yon?"
"From what?"
"Mi-krob-yo!
"Bac-teer-yaaa!
|||||||||hole|||
The bacteria eat into our teeth and make cavities.
Dapat pumunta ka na sa dentista."
You should go to the dentist at once."
"Ha? Sa dentista?"
"To the dentist?"
|||got goosebumps||||||
Ani felt goosebumps upon hearing the word "dentist."
She believed the dentist was a monster.
|||because||will call|||||||pliers||tooth pulling||
What do you call a person holding a pliers and pulling teeth?
"Yes, dentists are friends of children.
fighting|||||||||
Dentists fight the microbes in our teeth.
Alam mo, may sirang ngipin din ako noon, eh."
I used to have tooth decay, you know."
"Talaga?"
"Really?"
"O, tingnan mo ang bungi ko.
||||gap-toothed|
"Here, look at my gums.
Diyan dati nakatubo ang ngipin kong may bukbok.
||grown|||||
There used to be a tooth with dental caries* here.
|||||brave|||
I had to be very brave!" Nina said.
Nang gabing iyon, hindi makatulog si Ani.
That night, Ani hardly slept at all.
Masakit pa rin ang ngipin niya.
Her tooth was still aching terribly.
Prayed|||||||||
She prayed that the pain would go away.
Checked|||||||
Then she looked at her tooth in the mirror again.
"Puro bukbok nga!"
"They are full of dental caries!" she moaned.
Then she remembered what Mommy Lyn had said.
|||||||||get infected|||||
"If you don't go to the dentist, your other teeth might get tooth decay too."
future|||felt for|||||
The next morning when she woke up, the first thing Ani thought of was her tooth.
"Hmmmm, parang wala na yata ang sakit."
"Ummmm, I think it's stopped hurting."
Pero matamlay pa rin ang kanyang pakiramdam.
|lethargic|||||
But still she wasn't feeling well.
Hindi siya bumangon sa kama.
||get up||
She stayed in her bed.
Ayaw niyang kumain ng almusal.
She didn't want any breakfast.
Ayaw din niyang maglaro.
She didn't want to play.
"Ani dear, come on, get up so we can go to the dentist," greeted her mommy.
Kinabahan na naman si Ani.
Ani felt nervous again.
||||||||||||||argument|
"Mommy, I think my tooth is okay now It's not aching anymore."
"But the dentist still needs to look at it, dear.
|let happen|||||||||
If you leave it with a hole in it, one day it will hurt again.
|put in|||||||||||will pull out||
The dentist will fix your tooth with a filling, or if he can't, he'll have to pull it out.
Halika na. Bilisan mo, Anak!"
Come along. Hurry!"
Pinilit ni Ani na huwag umiyak.
Forced|||||
Ani was trying not to cry.
Daddy Viyo knew how Ani felt about going to the dentist.
||||||gentle||
"You're not scared of the dentist, are you Ani?"
"A, e medyo po,"
"Oh, a little bit," she sniffed.
sniff||||||||pulled|||||
"I'm afraid that it will hurt when the dentist pulls out my tooth."
"Konting sakit lang 'yon anak. At di 'yon magtatagal.
"Well, it will hurt a bit. But not for long.
||||||tooth extraction||throbbing||
Having a toothache is more painful than having a tooth pulled out."
"Totoo 'yan, Ani. Hindi magtatagal ang sakit ng ngipin mo.
"That's right, Ani. It won't hurt for long.
|||||||will remind||||||
And when it's over we will always remind you to brush your teeth," said Mommy Lyn.
So you won't have anymore tooth decay," added Mommy Lyn.
|||persuaded||||
At last Daddy and Mommy were able to persuade Ani that she would be better if she went to the dentist.
|||||little||||||||||||||||||
Besides, the little girl thought, "If Nina was brave enough to go to the dentist, I can be brave too."
Dr. De Leon's dental clinic looked nice.
May mga laruang nakabitin sa kisame.
|||hanging||ceiling
There were toys hanging from the ceiling.
|||||||stuck, attached||||constantly|smiling
There were pictures of animals posted on the wall, all of them smiling.
May matsing. May kuneho.
|monkey||
A monkey. A rabbit.
Parang nginingitian nila si Ani.
|smiling at|||
They all seemed to be smiling at Ani.
Was surprised||||||||||whistles|||
Ani was surprised that the dentist was a nice man who whistled while he worked.
Hindi parang monster.
Not like a monster.
Dr. De Leon was a smiling dentist.
Ang gaganda ng kanyang mga ngipin. Puting-puti!
And he has a set of beautiful even white teeth!
"Is this Ani? Aren't you a cute little girl," said Dr. De Leon.
Then he took Ani to his dental chair.
"Okey ka ba, Ani?" tanong ni Dr. De Leon.
'Are you okay, Ani?" he asked.
"Opo.
"Yes, Sir.
||||get dizzy||chair|
But, won't this chair make me dizzy?"
Biniro ni Dr. De Leon si Ani.
The dentist joked with Ani.
"Some kids come in here and pay us to ride in this."
He jacked up the dental chair to its highest level and then lowered her a bit.
Unti-unting nawawala ang takot ni Ani.
Little by little Ani's fear went away.
||still|put on||||||||||neck
Next, Dr. De Leon fastened a bib around Ani's neck.
"So you won't dribble on that pretty dress, or on ME!"
Then the dentist showed her the instruments he was going to use.
||||||||||end, tip
"See, there's a small round mirror at the end.
We'll put it inside your mouth so we can see your teeth."
Dr. De Leon took a careful look at all of Ani's teeth.
"I'll have to pull out your tooth, Ani.
Sinira na kasi ito ng bukbok.
The bad part has gotten right inside your tooth.
||||to be hurt|will put to sleep||||
But first, I want to put your tooth to sleep, so pulling it out won't hurt.
. . ." paliwanag ni Dr. De Leon.
||||||||||||explanation||||
If the tooth is asleep, you won't feel any pain when I pull it out," Dr. De Leon explained.
"Ha?
"Yes . . . I think I want my tooth to fall asleep first," Ani said.
||||||||syringe
But Ani felt nervous again when she saw the dentist's syringe.
|Here it is||||||||
"Here, I have some sleeping juice for your tooth."
"Pero paano ito iinumin ng ngipin ko?"
"But how can my tooth drink it?" Ani asked.
|||||||at the same time|||||||needle||||||||
"Here's a straw for the sleeping juice," pointed Dr. De Leon to the needle attached to a syringe that contains anesthesia.
"We'll let the tooth drink the sleeping juice so it will fall asleep."
"Baka masakit . . ."
"I-It might hurt .. "Ani, you'll feel a bit of pain from the injection, but you're going to be okay.
Pero madaling mawawala ito.
Soon you'll be fine.
Okay, now open your mouth."
Okay, now open your mouth."
"Aaaaa-aaaahhhhh ."
"Aaaaa-aaaahhhhh . . . ." Ani opened her mouth wide as Dr. De Leon gave the drink to the decayed tooth.
In a while Ani couldn't feel any more pain.
"Maybe my decayed tooth has fallen asleep," she thought.
With eyes closed, Ani thought of her pet cat Poochie.
She imagined the family's visit to Manila Zoo.
At nang mag-piknik sila sa park.
The picnic in the park.
Her first ride in an airplane going to Iloilo.
The big cotton candy she bought in the carnival.
Parang nakita pa nga niya ang kanyang lolo at lola sa probinsya.
She thought she even saw her grandparents in the province.
After a while, Dr. De Leon gently tapped Ani's shoulder.
"Tapos na, Ani."
"It's done, Ani."
"Mabilis lang po pala . . ." sabi ni Ani habang pinakikiramdaman ang gilagid.
"Wow, that's quick . . . ." said Ani, trying to feel her gums.
Dr. De Leon showed Ani the tooth that he had taken out.
"Ngiii! Ang dami palang butas ng ngipin ko!"
"Yuck! Look at those holes in my tooth!"
Ganyan ang ginagawa ng bukbok sa ngipin.
"That's what the microbes do to your tooth.
And if your teeth get bad, you get other sicknesses too.
That's why you should brush your teeth everyday.
You see, Ani, our teeth, just like all the parts of our body, are God's gift to us.
Kaya dapat nating alagaang mabuti."
That's why we should take good care of them," Dr. De Leon said kindly
. "Does that mean I shouldn't eat too many candies, like Mommy said?"
"Tama! O kailan mo ulit ako dadalawin, Ani?" nakangiting tanong ni Dr. De Leon.
"Right! Now, when are you going to see me again, Ani?" Dr. De Leon asked, smiling.
Ani liked him, but she still felt shy.
She just nodded and nodded.
"Next time, I'm going to remove the tartar when I do a cleaning of your teeth."
"Doc, maaari bang i-iskedyul mo rin kami?
"Doctor, can you schedule us all for a dental visit?
Ani's Daddy and I plan to come for a dental check-up and for thorough cleaning next week," Mommy Lyn said.
Before putting Ani down the dental chair, Dr. De Leon showed her a boxful of colorful things,
"O, Ani, pumili ka ng isang laruan. Premyo mo 'yan dahil ang tapang mo kanina."
"You can choose any toy you like. A prize for being brave."
"Bagong toy po, para sa akin? Salamat po."
"A new toy for me? Thank you!"
On their way out, Ani whispered something to Dr. De Leon.
The dentist happily gave what Ani asked for.
"Bakit, anak?
"What are you going to do with your tooth?" asked Daddy when he fetched Mommy and Ani.
"I'll keep it. So that I won't ever forget to brush my teeth," Ani winked and smiled.
Paano aalagaan ang ating ngipin:
How to take care for our teeth:

REMEMBER: OUR TEETH, LIKE THE OTHER PARTS OF OUR BODY ARE GOD'S GIFT TO US.
KAYA'T ALAGAAN NATIN ANG ATING NGIPIN.
THAT'S WHY WE SHOULD TAKE CARE OF OUR TEETH.
