Behold, these are the instruments of the spiritual art: which when they have been diligently fulfilled by us day and night, and re-signed on the day of judgment, that reward will be recompensed to us by the Lord, which He Himself promised: 'What eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has ascended into the heart of man, which God has prepared for those who love Him.' The workshop, however, where we diligently work all these things, is the cloister of the monastery, and stability in the Congregation.

Chapter V. On the Obedience of the Disciples.
Primus humilitatis gradas est obedientia sine mora.

The first step of humility is obedience without delay.
Haec convenit iis, qui nihil sibi Christo charius existimant, propter metum gehennae, vel gloriam vitae aeternae; et mox, ut aliquid imperatam a majore fuerit, ac si divinitus imperetur, moram pati nesciunt in faciendo.

This is suitable for those who think nothing is dearer to them than Christ, either out of fear of hell or for the glory of eternal life; and soon, if something is commanded by a superior, as if it were commanded by divine authority, they do not know how to delay in doing.
De quibus Dominus dicit: “In auditu auris obedivit mihi.” Et item dicit Doctoribus: “Qui vos audit, me audit.”

Therefore, these kinds of people, immediately leaving what is theirs and abandoning their own will, soon with their hands freed, and leaving the work they were doing imperfectly, follow the voice of the one commanding with the promptness of obedience; and just as in a single moment the command of the Master and the perfect work of the disciple, in the speed of the fear of God, both things commonly unfold more quickly, to which the love of advancing to eternal life clings.

Therefore, they take the narrow way: whence the Lord says: 'Narrow is the way that leads to life;' so that living not by their own judgment, or obedient to their desires and pleasures, but walking under the judgment and command of another, living in monasteries, they desire to have an Abbot as their leader.

Without a doubt, such ones imitate that saying of the Lord, in which he says: 'I came not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.'

But this very obedience will then be acceptable to God and sweet to men, if what is commanded is done not fearfully, not tardily, not lukewarmly, or with a complaint, or with the response of one unwilling; because the obedience given to superiors is rendered to God.
Ipse enim dixit: “Qui vos audit, me audit.” Et cum bono animo a discipulis praeberi oportet, quia “hilarem datorem diligit Deus.” Nam cum malo animo si obedit discipulus, et non solum ore, sed etiam corde si murmuraverit: etsi impleat jussionem, tamen acceptus jam non erit Deo, qui cor respicit murmurantis; et pro tali facto nullam consequitur gratiam; imo murmurantium poenam incurrit, si non cum satisfactione emendaverit.

For he himself said: 'Whoever hears you hears me.' And it must be presented by the disciples with a good spirit, because 'God loves a cheerful giver.' Indeed, if a disciple obeys with a bad spirit, and if he murmurs not only with his mouth but even in his heart: even if he fulfills the command, he will not be accepted by God, who looks at the heart of the one murmuring; and for such an act, he gains no grace; rather, he incurs the punishment of the murmurers if he does not amend with satisfaction.
