The Book of Judith, Chapter 7

1 On the next day, Holofernes commanded his armies to ascend against Bethulia.

2 There were one hundred twenty thousand foot soldiers and twenty-two thousand horsemen, besides the preparations of those men whom captivity had taken, and who had been taken from the provinces and cities of all the youth.

3 All prepared themselves together for battle against the children of Israel, and they came through the slope of the mountain up to the peak, which overlooks Dothan, from the place called Belma to Chelmon, which is against Esdrelon.
4 Filii autem Israël, ut viderunt multitudinem illorum, prostraverunt se super terram, mittentes cinerem super capita sua, unanimes orantes ut Deus Israël misericordiam suam ostenderet super populum suum.

4 But the children of Israel, when they saw their multitude, fell prostrate on the ground, casting ashes upon their heads, unanimously praying that the God of Israel would show His mercy upon His people.

5 And taking up their war arms, they sat in places that direct the narrow path through the mountainous areas, and they were guarding it all day and night.

6 Moreover, Holofernes, while he was circling around, found that the spring which flowed directed their aqueduct from the southern side outside the city: and he commanded that their aqueduct be cut off.

7 However, the springs were not far from the walls, from which they were seen to secretly draw water for refreshing rather than for drinking.
But|sons|of Ammon|and|of Moab|approached|to|Holofernes|saying|The sons|of Israel|not|in|spear|nor|in|arrow|trust|but|mountains|defend|them|and|fortify|them|hills|in|steepness|established

8 But the sons of Ammon and Moab approached Holofernes, saying: The sons of Israel do not trust in spear or arrow, but the mountains defend them, and the hills situated on the precipice fortify them.

9 Therefore, in order that you may overcome them without a battle, place guards at the springs, so that they do not draw water from them, and you will kill them without a sword, or certainly, wearied, they will surrender their city, which they think cannot be overcome because it is situated in the mountains.

10 And these words pleased Holofernes and his attendants, and he appointed centurions around each spring.

11 And when this guard had been completed for twenty days, the cisterns and water collections failed for all the inhabitants of Bethulia, so that there was no water within the city from which they could be satisfied even for one day, because water was given to the people daily by measure.

12 Then all the men, women, youths, and little ones gathered together to Ozias, and all together with one voice said: Let God judge between us and you, for you have done evil against us, unwilling to speak peacefully with the Assyrians, and for this reason God has sold us into their hands. And therefore there is no one to help us, as we are brought low before their eyes in thirst and great destruction. And now gather all who are in the city, that we may willingly surrender ourselves to the people of Holofernes. For it is better that we captives bless the living Lord than that we die and become a reproach to all flesh, when we see our wives and our infants die before our eyes. We call heaven and earth to witness today, and the God of our fathers, who avenges us according to our sins, that you now deliver the city into the hands of the army of Holofernes, and let our end be brief in the mouth of the sword, which becomes longer in the dryness of thirst. And when they had said these things, there was a great weeping and wailing in the church from all, and for many hours they cried out to God with one voice, saying: We have sinned with our fathers: we have acted unjustly, we have committed iniquity. You, because you are merciful, have mercy on us, or in your scourge avenge our iniquities, and do not deliver us who confess to you to a people who does not know you, that they may not say among the nations: Where is their God? And when they had grown weary from these cries and these tears and had fallen silent, Ozias, rising and filled with tears, said: Be of good courage, brothers, and let us wait for five days for the mercy of the Lord. For perhaps he will cut off his indignation and will give glory to his name. But if after five days help does not come, we will do the words that you have spoken.
