The Ultimate Pace Race | Road v Trails

We are back for another challenge.

Only problem is though we don't know what the challenge is yet. Our

friends from dhb have set us a head-to-head challenge

where the first part is to head out

and run 5k flat out. That's all that we know.

And then part two will be revealed to us.

So stay tuned for an epic challenge.

I am ready. It's one all, I think I've got this.

You're not even being quietly confident.

There's been a lot of abuse about my age.

Well, I mean the Olympics that you ran Andy was quite a long time ago, so...

Right, stop it. Let's, let's just get going. Okay. You ready? Yep. 3, 2, 1.

We're off. And I'm pushing into an early lead, as you might expect.

I love a challenge. Even more than a challenge,

I love a mystery challenge. I don't know what this is going to be.

I've got a decent idea of my 5K levels of fitness.

So I'm just going to try and head towards that target time

and bank as much time as I possibly can against Sarah,

because I know there's going to be some kind of stitch-up

in the second part of this challenge.

I don't know how much I'm gonna be able to speak during this,

but before I get really tired I need to think tactics.

there's got to be a part two to this challenge that involves more running,

surely.

And I know the producers usually stitch Andy up pretty badly.

So... surely I've got this.

I run a good flat out 5k. Don't kill myself over it.

And then I've got a win in the bag with whatever part two might be.

It's a beautiful place to run 5K this morning.

I'm just trying to focus on staying relaxed,

maintaining my pace and not thinking too much about Sarah's smug face.

It's getting a bit too hot to run flat out. But look at this. Nyoom.

And, uh, there's an orange speck probably around the other side of

the lake by now, but oh well, I'm having a great day.

Okay. Home stretch. Into the final K. It's so windy, but I'm going okay.

Here's another thing that I think is going to work in my favour.

It's been quite a while since Andy was in the Olympics and yes,

he is still ridiculously fast,

but whenever he does all-out, all-out races and flat-out runs,

he's, he's pretty broken afterwards. A hundred

metres to go, still going okay. Ah.

Coming into the last K now. I want to slow down,

but I feel like speed is going to help me in this challenge.

I'm okay. I'm okay. I'm pleased with that.

Just inside 17 minutes was my target. 16:51. Let's see how Sarah gets on.

The temptation right now to just cheat and swim across

the lake to the finish line. Woo. Strong.

Oh.

Flat-out 5K done.

23:53. I'm happy with that.

I don't know what that means. Is that good? Is that bad? I'm not sure,

but at least that's done.

Okay. Flat-out 5K done. I'm pretty exhausted. That's all

I've got the energy for today, so I think we probably should just call it quits there, it's a pretty fair result.

I predicted you were going to say that, however,

I see a card from the producers. Oh, you ready for this? No. Okay.

Andy and Sarah,

who is the more consistent runner? You've done 5K on the nice flat

roads, and now you need to do 5K on the hilly terrain of

the trails. The smaller the percentage time difference between the two,

the more likely you are to win. Good luck.

And the fact that I've just run literally as hard as I could possibly go.

I poured everything into that, and I'm really regretting that now. I just,

I'm in such a mood about it. I don't even want to talk to you about it.

See, you are very, very fast,

but I know for a fact that you are probably much faster on the road

whereas, plonk me down anywhere and I'll pretty much run the same time.

So I'm feeling confident.

Ah, downhill start. I'm flying along at the moment,

but what goes down must come up.

Let's review the situation here. I don't know where we are.

I don't know what's going on and I don't know where we're going and I'm

definitely going to fall over. I'm so bad on the trails. Come on.

This route's completely new to both of us.

So there's an element of navigation as well.

And trying not to fall over while talking to you.

that's what my legs have just done. Going on a nice little flat bit now.

Trying to enjoy the scenery because I love trail running.

I'm running hard,

but it's an incredible reminder of how beautiful trail running is.

I have only fallen

I think twice in my running career.

Keep your eyes peeled for slip trips, slip and fall hazards,

'cause they're there and they will find you

even if you don't see them.

Ah, I went the wrong way!

I've probably cost myself minimum 30 seconds.

Oh no, this is awful.

The camera's going to completely flatten out this hill.

I don't think I can run this.

So tactically,

I'd thought I needed to bank time in the 5k,

the first 5k to give myself an advantage over Sarah.

But because it's a percentage, a proportional difference,

I've really screwed myself.

Now, I don't know about you, but I can't do the maths,

That was spectacular and the results are in and it's incredibly close.

That was so fun. So I ran my 5K on the road in 23 minutes

and 53 seconds.

And I ran my trail 5K in 29 minutes and 12 seconds.

And I ran 16:51 and then 23:43.

So as much as I hate to admit it,

and I'm gonna make an excuse here that I went about 0.2 of a mile off course,

but that's completely my fault, completely my fault. Oh, no excuses Andy, no excuses.

But I have to hand the victory to Sarah.

Yes. Another victory for me. He may be fast,

but he's not consistent and I will take consistency over speed any day.
