#81 – Roma 1960. Le Olimpiadi della nuova Italia

Sollievo.

Che cos'è il sollievo.

È la sensazione di chi all'improvviso si sente leggero dopo un momento di difficoltà, di preoccupazione o di grande fatica.

Trovare casa dopo averla cercata per tanto tempo è un sollievo.

Sapere che una persona che stava male adesso sta meglio è un sollievo.

Finire in tempo un progetto difficile è un sollievo.

Nello sport? Ci può essere sollievo?

Forse sì, in casi particolari. Per esempio quando la tua squadra vince all'ultimo minuto una partita che rischiava di perdere.

In generale, però, sono altre le emozioni legate allo sport. L'euforia, la rabbia, la gioia, la tensione.

La storia di oggi però parla proprio di sport e sollievo. In questo caso, però, il sollievo non è quello di singoli atleti o squadre.

È quello di un intero popolo. Naturalmente, il popolo italiano.

Che grazie allo sport, nel suo simbolo più importante, ha trovato il sollievo di sentire che finalmente era finita.

Era finita la paura, era finita l'immagine odiosa dell'Italia fascista.

Perché nel 1960, 15 anni dopo la morte di Mussolini e la fine della guerra, sono cominciati i Giochi della diciassettesima Olimpiade. E si sono tenuti a Roma.

L'Italia ce l'aveva messa tutta. Per ricostruire le strade e le ferrovie, ma anche per ricostruire un'identità nazionale e una reputazione internazionale.

E con le Olimpiadi ce l'ha fatta, ha potuto mostrare al mondo che quella pagina oscura era finita.

Il 25 agosto del 1960, la torcia olimpica entra nello stadio di Roma. L'ultimo tedoforo si chiama Giancarlo Peris. Corre con la torcia in mano, e gli ultimi passi li fa piano. Sono i gradini della tribuna Tevere dello Stadio Olimpico. Lì in cima c'è il braciere.

Si accende.

Iniziano ufficialmente i Giochi olimpici di Roma '60.

Sulle tribune, gioia, emozione, attesa. E soprattutto, sollievo.

Dalla fine della guerra fino al 1960, ci sono state tre edizioni dei Giochi olimpici. A Londra, a Helsinki, a Melbourne.

Il governo italiano ha dovuto sudare sette camicie per ottenere l'organizzazione dei Giochi nel Bel Paese. Perché l'Italia era in cattive condizioni dal punto di vista delle infrastrutture. E soprattutto, perché ancora tanti in Europa e nel mondo ricordavano l'Italia dalla parte dei cattivi. Il Paese fascista che si era alleato con la Germania nazista e aveva causato una guerra terribile.

Anche se il governo del 1955 era composto da orgogliosi antifascisti, la guerra era ancora una ferita aperta difficile da dimenticare. Eppure, anche grazie all'abilità degli uomini politici dell'epoca, l'Italia ce l'ha fatta e Roma ha potuto ospitare le Olimpiadi.

Questo è un episodio della serie Sport di Salvatore racconta e quindi non voglio dilungarmi su dettagli storici. Preferisco lasciare la parola alle storie sportive.

Ne ho scelte cinque. Cinque che in Italia molti e molte conoscono, e che per questo voglio condividere con voi.

Storia numero 1 – Livio Berruti, l'angelo della pista

Le gare di atletica leggera si tengono tutte sulla pista dello Stadio Olimpico. Quella che oggi tanti tifosi di calcio odiano perché tiene lontano il campo dalle tribune e in effetti da molte parti dello stadio a Roma è praticamente impossibile vedere bene la partita.

Nel 1960, però, quella pista di atletica non suscita odio, ma eccitazione. È una pista vecchio stile, fatta in terra battuta, lontana antenata delle piste sintetiche di oggi. E su quella pista, in mezzo a tanti campioni, corre anche un ragazzo torinese cresciuto nel Lazio e studente di chimica all'università. Si chiama Livio Berruti e la sua specialità sono i 200 metri piani.

I giornalisti lo descrivono come un ragazzo timido, ma molto motivato. Corre sempre con gli occhiali da sole e il suo passo in gara è così leggero che sembra volare. Per questo, qualcuno lo soprannomina: l'angelo.

E Berruti in effetti vola sulla pista dei 200 metri. In semifinale arriva al traguardo in 20''5, quello che all'epoca era il record del mondo. In finale, lo stesso giorno, arriva davanti a tutti.

È il primo italiano nella storia a vincere una gara di velocità. Vent'anni dopo di lui ci riuscirà Pietro Mennea. E nel 2021, come ricordiamo bene, Marcell Jacobs.

Quello di Berruti è un exploit magico, figlio anche dell'entusiasmo del pubblico romano. Dopo le Olimpiadi avrà una bellissima carriera, ma quella vinta a Roma sarà l'unica medaglia a cinque cerchi della sua vita.

Storia numero 2 – Cassius Clay, lo chiameranno Mohammed Alì

Lo scenario questa volta è il Palazzetto dello Sport del quartiere EUR, dove oggi gioca le sue partite di casa la squadra di pallacanestro della capitale, la Virtus Roma.

La sfida è tra due atleti diversissimi tra loro. A un angolo c'è il pugile polacco Zbigniew Pietrzykowski, 28 anni, campione europeo, grande esperienza, bassino ma potente. All'altro angolo c'è un pugile americano di 18 anni, alto e possente. A Roma da giorni lo conoscono tutti. Perché è impossibile non notarlo, alto e grosso com'è. E soprattutto, con quell'aria da spaccone, che dice a tutti che diventerà il pugile più forte del mondo.

In effetti, lo diventerà. Quella sera a Roma vince la medaglia d'oro olimpica e poi torna in America per cominciare la sua carriera da professionista. Sui giornali dell'epoca e sui registri ufficiali dei Giochi c'è il suo primo nome, Cassius Clay. Il mondo presto lo conoscerà come Mohammed Alì.

Storia numero 3 -Wilma Rudolph, la corsa verso il sogno

Il mito del sogno americano ormai è quasi uno stereotipo. Soprattutto nello sport. Storie di uomini e donne partiti dal nulla e arrivati al successo grazie alla motivazione, al duro lavoro e alla voglia di vincere. È vero, oggi queste cose hanno un suono un po' retorico alle nostre orecchie. Nel 1960, però, storie così erano davvero molto emozionanti. E una di quelle lo è ancora. La storia di Wilma Rudolph.

Originaria di Clarksville, Tennessee, Wilma era una dei 22 figli di una famiglia afroamericana povera in canna. Era nata nel 1940, e da bambina aveva preso la poliomielite, la stessa malattia che aveva portato il presidente americano Roosevelt sulla sedia a rotelle. A Wilma, per fortuna, è andata meglio. Nonostante le difficoltà per accedere alle cure per una donna afroamericana povera nell'America degli anni '40, è riuscita a salvare le sue gambe. Per camminare, e anche per correre.

Quando arriva a Roma, Wilma ha 20 anni e alle spalle una vita piena di complicazioni, tra cui anche una figlia che ha avuto senza essere sposata. Però ha anche un grande talento per la corsa, e gambe lunghe fatte per andare veloce. Velocissimo, anzi. Sulle piste dell'Olimpico, le stesse di Berruti, Rudolph conquista tre medaglie d'oro. Nei 100 metri, nei 200 metri e nella staffetta 4×100. Il pubblico romano si innamora di lei, e i giornali dell'epoca le danno il soprannome di Gazzella nera, che oggi per la verità suona inopportuno e un po' razzista. Anche lei, come Livio Berruti, ha vissuto a Roma il suo momento magico. Due anni dopo ha deciso che per lei con lo sport professionistico bastava così e si è ritirata, per occuparsi finalmente della figlia e lavorare come insegnante e allenatrice. Il giusto premio di tranquillità dopo anni così travagliati.

Storia numero 4 – Nino Benvenuti, a pugni verso la vittoria

Torniamo all'EUR e al palazzetto dello sport. Negli stessi giorni in cui Cassius Clay diventa una leggenda mondiale, c'è un'altra storia che appassiona tifosi, giornalisti e curiosi. È quella di Nino Benvenuti.

A differenza di Cassius Clay, che in Italia prima delle Olimpiadi è praticamente uno sconosciuto, Benvenuti è un nome molto noto per gli appassionati di pugilato.

Viene dalla stessa regione di Primo Carnera e Tiberio Mitri, due pugili di cui abbiamo parlato qui su Salvatore racconta, ed è praticamente imbattibile.

Tra il 1955 e il 1960 ha combattuto 108 incontri e ne ha perso solo uno.

Abbiamo detto che viene dalla regione di Carnera e Mitri, cioè l'odierno Friuli-Venezia Giulia, ma vale la pena dire qualche parola in più.

Perché Benvenuti è nato a Isola, una cittadina sulla costa adriatica che oggi fa parte della Slovenia. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, l'Italia ex fascista e la nuova Jugoslavia comunista di Tito si sono contese queste zone causando tensione e paura, anche a causa degli strascichi di quello che era successo durante la guerra.

La famiglia di Nino, anche per fuggire alle violenze, aveva lasciato Isola trasferendosi a Trieste, prima controllata dagli americani e poi infine annessa all'Italia.

Questa storia di esule resta un punto importante nella vita di Benvenuti che, anche per questo motivo, non ha mai nascosto le sue simpatie politiche di destra. Sul ring però, il pugile istriano non porta la sua storia, ma la sua voglia di vincere.

Si laurea campione olimpico nei pesi welter, dopo avere battuto in finale l'ostico pugile sovietico Jurij Radonjak. Dall'anno dopo, come Cassius Clay, passa al professionismo per diventare una leggenda.

Storia numero 5 – A piedi nudi nella storia

Gli esperti di atletica leggera lo dicono all'unisono: la regina di tutti gli sport è la maratona. La leggendaria corsa di fondo che dura 42 chilometri e 195 metri è la disciplina in cui serve usare tutte le proprie doti. Forza, resistenza, intelligenza, motivazione.

Da qualche tempo ormai, gli atleti più forti nella maratona vengono quasi tutti da alcuni Paesi africani. Corridori eritrei, kenioti, ma soprattutto etiopi.

Tutti figli, simbolicamente, del primo atleta africano capace di vincere un oro olimpico. Era un maratoneta e quell'oro l'ha vinto a Roma. Era l'etiope Abebe Bikila.

La storia di Bikila che arriva a Roma davanti a tutti ha dell'incredibile. Per tanti motivi.

Il primo è meramente sportivo. Nel 1960, Bikila aveva alle spalle un'esperienza da corridore che durava solo da cinque anni. Aveva iniziato per caso, notato da un allenatore quando faceva la guardia del corpo per l'imperatore d'Etiopia. Gambe lunghe, polmoni capienti e tanta tenacia lo avevano portato a entrare nella squadra di atletica del suo Paese per le olimpiadi.

Era uno tra i tanti corridori senza grandi speranze. I giornalisti e gli esperti aspettavano la vittoria del sovietico Sergej Popov. Eppure quel carneade arrivato dall'Etiopia stupì tutti.

Intanto perché aveva deciso di correre scalzo. Le scarpe dello sponsor gli avevano causato delle vesciche ai piedi e aveva preferito farne a meno. E poi perché correva velocemente, con un grande ritmo, capace di stare davanti a tutti. La sera del 10 settembre, all'arrivo, sotto l'Arco di Costantino, il primo a tagliare il traguardo è proprio lui. Abebe Bikila.

E chissà cosa avrà pensato davvero in quel momento. Chissà se si sarà accorto di avere compiuto un gesto rivoluzionario. Quello di avere vinto, davanti a tutti, sotto uno dei simboli di Roma. Quella Roma da cui, quando lui era bambino, Mussolini aveva ordinato la conquista dell'Etiopia, del suo Paese, facendo migliaia di morti in nome della folle idea del colonialismo.

E in mezzo ai simboli dell'antico potere imperiale, Bikila ha ricevuto l'onore più grande che uno sportivo possa sognare. La medaglia d'oro, splendente nella notte romana, la piccola vendetta di un giovane rivoluzionario a casa dei suoi ex-padroni.

Il giorno dopo la maratona, l'11 settembre, arriva la fine dei Giochi olimpici di Roma. L'Italia conquista il terzo posto del medagliere, con 13 ori e 36 medaglie totali, dietro le irraggiungibili potenze di Stati Uniti e Unione Sovietica che combattevano la loro piccola guerra fredda anche nello sport.

All'Italia restano le grandi soddisfazioni di 13 medaglie d'oro tra atletica, pugilato, pallanuoto, scherma, ciclismo ed equitazione. Ma anche, e soprattutto, l'orgoglio di essere riusciti a organizzare un evento così grande e complesso come le Olimpiadi. E di esserci riusciti in un momento complicato, dopo la guerra, avvolti dallo scetticismo di mezzo mondo.

Cos'avranno provato quella sera di arrivederci gli organizzatori, gli atleti, gli uomini e le donne di tutta Roma?

Io una risposta ce l'ho.

Sollievo.
